Created by the very patient and talented Henry Bustamonte.
He's already received my gushing praise via email.
But ransim hasn't. Thanks ransim for organising the Handbook contest that led to me getting my first ever piece of Art.
I love it! -
Quote:I'd quite like a powerset that involves the use of disguise, or perhaps a power pool. Not necessarily a temp drop, although this one works more for me than your other suggestions.
Disguises: Arachnos, COT, Freak, Sky-Raider, Council, Norm, etc. These would allow you to move through missions with hostile groups without agroing them until you reach the boss or objective in non-kill-all missions.
Quote:Sleeping Gas: released on a group of bad guys you can move past without agroing them.
Quote:Lock-picks: you can use these to pick the locks on locked doors rather than have to kill everybody to find a key.
In the AE this was not a feature because of the map's inability to determine whether or not the mob would be on the right side of the door to be defeated and allow the player through. So I'm guessing that special coding is used in the very few missions which use that feature.
Quote:Bug- planting a bug in a mission would give you a chance to generate a tip mission or other side mission. Would have to be planted on a defeated bad guy, on a surveillance camera, or on a desk in a mission.
The Arachnos Flyer bug mission is another example - the contact actually gives you the bugs. No need for a separate 'temp power'.
The Game can't be expected to cater for every player's own 'take' on how things should be done. For instance, why would my psychic character need a Tip mission drop when he/she can sense that something is going to happen?
So there has to be a certain level of fudge to allow us to imagine for ourselves, and not be railroaded into a certain way that things work, and can't work otherwise.
And just in case there's a counter suggestion of 'give all psychic powered characters a special power to drop Tips' - what about my characters who are psychic but don't have a Psi damage power?
Quote:Camera- would allow players to take pictures of evidence as part of a clue gathering objective. Take a picture of a glowie (like a file cabinet or desk). After the mission it would provide a clue to the next mission.
You can even create a macro called 'Bug' that fires off the appropriate emote and brings up the AFK message 'Taking a picture...' if you want.
Having pooh-poohed a lot in this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if I were forced to eat my hat though - with the new developments who knows what direction the game will go in?
My personal prediction if some of these ideas were implemented would be either a new AT with its own arcs that feature this kind of Detective work, or an amusing 'mini-game'. -
Quote:I was going to post something then found this gem, which sums it up rather neatly. For comic book fans, it's the closest you can get to being a hero or villain without actual superpowers.
As a kid, I spent far too many hours reading comics and fantasizing about being a superhero myself. As an adult, I've reluctantly accepted the fact that I'm not from Krypton, will never gain powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, will never have a dying alien bequeath me his power ring, will never be exposed to DNA-altering gamma radiation, etc.
When I play CoH, however, I'm a kid again. And all the characters that have been simmering in my subconscious for decades come to life. How cool is that?
I still want super powers, although as I get older they get more jaded and specific: i.e. Telekinesis to force people out of my way, or Flight to just get home after work. On bleak days the ability to make people's heads explode a la 'Scanners' appeals. -
Quote:I'm going to second that emotion.Sigh. Those other looks aren't bad in and of themselves, but I cringe every time a female character is "reimagined" with more cleavage and less pants. If all this game's female signature characters start going the way of Boobcat I'm going to complain a lot. It's pretty much to be expected from mainstream comics, but would be a huge step backwards for this game.
Except Valkyrie isn't, you know, a Valkyrie. She has tech-based powers and was Positron's sidekick. Tech armor fits her backstory.
I was a little disturbed to see that 'Psyche is boobtastic in the Tutorial splash page.
C'mon this is 2011, and definitely NOT a Liefield comic. Psyche's supposed to be a woman of a certain age, an amazing psychic, and married to Manticore.
Large breasts and pr0nstar poses don't do it for me. Psyche kicking the *** of the invading Shivans does it for me. -
Only because Psyche would mindwipe him in an instant if he suddenly had flying women with bows hanging around... my god that was my first fanboi...

Babel's Journal
Our encounter with Pseudonym has had a profound effect upon me:
I believe I was hit by one of his 'toys' as the others call them. A strange, black whip cut across my arm. The wound was barely a scratch but it has infected me somehow and I fear for my sanity.
I have started to hear voices, or more specifically a voice. I can't determine its gender or where it is, but it seems frightened. Luckily it has not told me to kill anyone. Or even do anything out of my usual character. But it troubles me.
To add to this, my powers also seem to be waxing: I can't always control them and this is becoming embarrassing when venturing out of the base. I can often hear stray thoughts that previously I was able to screen out, and some days I need only point in the direction of an object and it starts moving. Most troubling indeed. -

One of my favourite characters visual-wise is, bizarrely, Aurora Borealis.
She has a couple of unique costume variants (the diadem and her ankle rings) yet she also uses legacy pieces.
Ms Liberty also has a fun character look. It's iconic, and not just because I see her every time I roll a new pure Hero (atm at any rate...). She has the proper, covered-up Super Heroine look, proving that you don't need to run around in your underwear (Swan, I'm looking at you...) to fight crime. Or have the chest slider set to 11.
Villain-wise, I like Black Scorpion because there's something of the 'possibly not as big as his suit makes him look' guy inside a great big powersuit. That to me hints at a guy with 'issues'. Kinda like looking at Cole's or Neutron's tower in Praetoria and thinking 'Now what is he trying to make up for? And it actually looks like a powersuit (compared with President Marchand's legacy Steampunk costume).
I like Desdemona's costume for its simplicity. And I actually prefer Belladonna Vetriano's look over her Primal Ghost Widow look. I think Ghost Widow is too obvious whereas Belladonna looks like she used to be/still is a secret policewoman.
And finally, two characters that are close to my heart: Vernon Von Grun and Becky the Tarantula Mistress. I think Becky actually needs some pink adornments on her Tarantula Queen model, and more stories about her and featuring her valley girl supervillain charm (had to chuck that one in there; she is like, so totally awesome).
Vernon does look like a mad scientist in training. And again he mainly uses legacy costume pieces.
And speaking of mad scientists - the Doctor in Mercy Island fits the bill of 'low-level creepy scientist'. I think Shelley Percy, in Cap Au Diable, could be updated resolution-wise. I like that she's in a lab coat because she is, at heart, an evil scientist who gets metas to do all the dirty work for her. She just needs a bit more resolution.
Oh and Darrin Wade, Monty, Mercedes, Percy and the other one are good Midnighter contacts. They are clearly of the wealthy persuasion whilst retaining the 'magical researcher' look. However, Percy is featured in the 45-50 arc 'Upon The Psychic Plane' and is still using his old 'Hapless Citizen' model, as oposed to his shinier 'contact in Croatoa/Midnighter Arc' model. Just thought I'd point that out for continuity's sake. -
I find it weird that Energy Blast tends to get the raw deal when there are plenty of other attacks/toggles that do Knockback or Repel.
Hurricane, Repel, Telekinesis, Force Bolt, Telekinetic Blast, Telekinetic Thrust, Torrent (not sure if anyone ever pickjs that from Darkj Blast / Scrapper Ancilliary anyway), that Haze thing from Rad Blast, Tornado.
Especially on Defenders, I always thought that the knockback component was higher because it's a Secondary effect, which Defenders tend to have higher numbers on.
I think it also depends on the team. Was doing a Sister Psyche run the other night and we had no tank (shock horror! how did we cope?! ) but we did have a Storm/ defender. Now I'm partial to Storm because it's awesome and I don't mind a lot of knockback especially if there's not much else mitigation for aggro/time critters spent on the floor going around. Others in the team were a bit wary.
For me though it was fun to have the mobs flying, especially with a Tornado being let loose. It kept the Freakshow flyers (including the ebil Super Stunners) in check. And we didn't have an awful lot of high damage AoE anyway. In short it was fun because it wasn't: Herd -> Mez -> AoE, rinse and repeat.
It may not have been 'ultra efficient gaming' but it felt a lot more like a superhero battle. -
A sort of plant-hybrid fairy-type set would work, with a [Vial of Bees]-style power in the Primary akin to [Gang War] but more of a horrible debuff.
In essence I suppose a mad-scientist MM would work...
Oh! Oh! *is inspired by University Challenge being on in the background*
Premium AT - Mad Scientist! Or Just Scientist! (The '!' is important)
Using the power of Science! the player has access to a minion creation system...
Okay, maybe I need to go and lie down/draw up the idea for this.
I'll hit some things in game until the madness passes. -
Why not make the initial contact with the Registrar like Detectives or Brokers?
Except of course that the Registrar is immediately contactable via cellphone once clicked.
That way the registrar also becomes a contact, although I suppose if the bases are accessible via trams (and I think I would prefer NOT to have it accessible via Ouroboros, just keep 'transit' missions there and leave the 'in the City/Isles' bases as a Tram/Ferry/Helicopter thing) then the contact is redundant, except for 'paying rent'.
Now, once this QoL issue is worked out, then my ebil plot is revealed: Personal Apartments! Wait, no, I can explain, it would be easy*!
*Insert generic code rant/snarky objection to assumptions about development time -
Um, I tend to use flight/hover a fair bit in outdoor maps. Versus Hamidon in the LGTF I find Flight very useful...
But I understand why no powers when hoverboard/rocketboard/magic ironing board is in use. I mean if it looks good, sometimes that's enough. -
That's not a bad suggestion there. It makes as much sense to have bases tied to existing travel portals as it does to have the swirly blue portals.

Quote:I chuckled, a lot.And I want a server only for men who listen to and know way too many George Michael lyrics while still totally liking girls.
It's Freedom, you've got to give for what you take.
Had a debate re sexuality and a possible Pride event in Pocket D for Union, once. At the time I think there had been an event on one of the American servers, and the way I saw it (at the time) was I thought it would be neat to have a gay player event in-game for Europe.
Now I'd say 'no' on the principle of equality means equal treatment. Things change, including people.
I know this has little to do with the OP. Just felt like sharing. -
I say let them do their thing.
We start becoming 'mentors' we start telling people how we personally want them to RP.
It's a nice idea, but very much open to abuse. And I think it would be abused.
Of course, that's not to stop us from actively encouraging people to sign up if they like what they see. So let them join in and find their own way. But do let them join in. -
No-win, no-fee ambulance chaser Chance McGuffin was able to let out a cry of surprise before being cut in half by a really really big metal propellor.
No one came to his funeral.
((I may also be in that kind of mood)) -
I'm expecting to get the 'I'd rather see x updated than this' responses. No matter, this is the suggestions forum after all.
Atlas and Mercy are getting a revamp.
So I think it's time to do something about SG/VG portals (don't worry, it makes sense in my head).
They are currently standing in 'odd' places and are a swirly mess of energy. That makes an annoying noise. All it would take was someone to tie Luminary's shoelaces together and tip her over and she'd be lost in some mystical techno-magic vortex.
I digress.
So, a SG/VG building per zone is required, imho. Where it makes sense, obviously. I'm not advocating a building slap bang in the middle of the Shadow Shards or Monster Island.
And in keeping with the theme of the zones, perhaps make each building reflective of where it is placed?
So a VG building in Mercy would either be dilapidated (if in the Snake-infested part of town) or a slicker, Arachnos bannered affair if located within the fortress/town. A building in Founders would have a luxurious feel, maybe a few Vanguard posters (owing to Rikti presence and VG portal presence).
Each building would have a SG/VG registrar, or 'superintendent'. Perhaps an insp vendor. In the case of TF contacts, Sharkhead could house Silver Mantis. Founders could house Khan. Just some examples of tidying up a zone.
This is more of a 'want' rather than a 'need'. It's true that other resources in game are being jollied up because they will be the focus point for new/returning players once Freedom/i21 hits. Perhaps attention is not wanting to be drawn to SG/VG bases owing to the fact that, well, there's not been a lot of love and I suspect there won't be for a loooooong time.
And my other reasoning behind a building that houses access to SG/VG bases is that when Praetoria was developed, there are buildings within each zone that have a 'story'. So when you're sent to Athena Labs, you are sent to the same building which just so happens to have an Athena Labs logo on the front.
I think that's neat and definitely the 'way forward' for future zones/revamps (ever noticed how Fusionette is always found in the same block of warehouses (that actually look like warehouses from the outside) in Faultline, as opposed to a random back door to a generic buiilding?).
Now if only the 'time capsule' building 'down the road' from City Hall could be built, eh? -
Quote:Out of all your suggestions, this one hits me as something I'd actually want.
7. Personal Bases: It's an idea that's been mentioned numerous times... and hey that OTHER hero game just added something like this (though I think their version falls short even of our current base system). It could be a simple influence sink and give all players an opportunity to play with the base builder. If the idea was popular and profitable it could lead to the overhaul of the base building system that players have been asking about for years!
And if it were to be implemented, I would like to see removal of this energy/control nonsense. Storage would be limited and still generate a 'rent' but would allow the following:
Recipes, Salvage, Enhancements.
Give the apartments 3 basic sizes (Small, Medium, Large - shocking I know) and allow for 'windows'.
So another setting would be: Zone. The player can either have a view of something iconic within a particular zone (Atlas's Statue, for example) or a more generic Paragon/Rogue/Praetoria 'scene'. Yes this limits things like, for instance, having infinite varieties of window 'dressing' (such as a sky full of stars to suggest that the 'apartment' is some kind of space station, but I think it's worth keeping the 'scenes' to things we already know. It enforces the images in our weak player minds and keeps us playing (or something...) -
Ah but Hero Corps got random cossies too. The shark lady in RWZ makes me think of the PvP comic every time.
I also like this idea because I like the little things explained. At least in the Architect, the vendor guy is behind a desk. People randomly standing in the World bugs me (yes, even some of the more civilian contacts - surely they'd be inside a building?!).
And in a slightly more OT way - can we give some of the contacts a rest and let them sit down, please? Bobcat, although she is a Lazy Catgirl, makes more sense as a contact in Praetoria than Cain Royce, standing in the middle of a busy and dangerous zone, wearing a business suit. -
Quote:The AE would have been a better system if not for the people who willfully abused it. Discuss.Yeah, power set respecs have always been CoH's canonical example of the Why We Can't Have Nice Things principle at work. Which was and remains tragic, because - particularly with characters who've been established for years now and new power sets coming periodically - it'd sure be fun for those of us who wouldn't abuse it.

Quote:Perspective is advised.Yes it is reality. Grin. I said stuff happenz before I read your post
Reality was double Xp being scheduled after my boss had done the schedule. Reality is my going through hoops to wrestle some playing time during the event. Reality is I succeeded somewhat. Still had to work a bit on Friday and Sunday but I got all Saturday to play. Reality is after all that....the treat is yanked away. Reality is I probably will not be able to repeat the process as I already begged and pleaded.
Reality is...reality bites sometimes...especially when you care.
Lisa.
This is a really out-of-proportion reaction to something. There will be other events, levelling at 'twice' the speed will just have to happen some other time.
I'm just glad major problem/s is/are being looked at.
I'm not going to be free for the new proposed weekend, but I think I will live without breaking down. -
Oh and please, no matter how many people say 'I think it's a good idea' - NO VOTING ON INDIVIDUAL STORIES!
-
I don' know, but I suspect that tile sets have something to do with the latest content, i.e. a lot of the new stuff has been taking place in warehouse maps.
Suddenly we get an upgrade. Lots of people run the content and see the new art. It's worth it. (I'm purposefully ignoring the fact that I can't run the new maps without silly amounts of lag)
Striga could, indeed, do with a graphics upgrade and certainly some different styles of Council map would be greatly appreciated. Story-wise I think the zone and its arcs are fine.
Concrete hangars, massive machines that might produce Mech Men, a possible redesign of the 'swimming pool' Council map for the Vampyri 'pod' mission would be lovely additions.
I'm hoping with Freedom there will be more players going through Striga, Croatoa etc and I do hope that eventually other zones get the story upgrade that these zones (and later, Faultine) have received.
Until then, I'm not sure there are 'enough' players running through these arcs as there once were (excluding Faultline here, obviously) for the Developers to say 'We need new tilesets to make sure that Striga keeps up with the rest of the game graphically'. -
I'd be up for this because it wouldn't (hopefully) involve sitting at the keyboard every hour of every day waiting for the next post/opportunity to add something.
Consider me interested.
I quite like the idea regarding a common zone or enemy group. No doubt someone will derail with some kind of quasi-dimensional self-eating plot* but then one only has to endure their post until the next story pops along!
*I may have put that there to at least try to discourage such tomfoolery
