Looking at some of the COH: Freedom stuff. I guess you can thank me and this thread for it all
-
The two fire farms I did over and over and over and over and over and over and over seemed to work just fine. What is the problem here?
-
Looking at rolling a DP/Pain or a DP/thermal. In reading both sets powers, I like the fact that both do a little bit of healing and provide buffs in different forms. My questions are these:
For team play, which is "better" overall:
Which has more longevity (meaning good from lvl 1 to 50 and beyond)?
I avoid solo'ing but sometimes the teams are not there, which one can help more?:
I appreciate your input on this matter. -
Quote:/signedReally?
In my experience, most teams simply didn't give a damn as long as you didn't leech and were generally fun to play with.
BTW I am loving my trick arrow Defendant AND Corruptor - I know I am crazy to have both - not because of their awesomeness powerwise - which is very debatable - but because their awesomeness in the fun category.
When I built these characters, I did it from a concept not from a pov of how good they would be in doing TF X, Trial Y or Raid.
I an lvling up a ill/FF currently on lvl 22. I love the concept and will have fun playing her in the existing concent and presumably in future cantent as well. -
Quote:The senarios you spin don't mention anything about new/returning players joining the player base as mentioned in other posts. This is a good point actually. A very good point.
What happens to the game if enough people decide that playing for free is a better deal than paying $15 a month to play a couple hours a week?
NCSoft has proven several times they are NOT shy about pulling the plug on games that aren't making them money. Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, Lineage all gone, or soon to be gone.
If enough people decide that they would rather play for free and nopt really buy any microtransaction stuff, suddenly you have a game that has the exact same population it did before, but is now actively LOSING money, because half of those people are playing for free now.
It's a more realistic scenario than some are giving it credit for. How many in this thread alone would cancel their subscription tomorrow if you could play for free without really losing that much? Probably better than half. That cross-section would probably extend more or less the same across the game.
So what would NCSoft do if their game retains the same population, and costs just as much to operate, and is suddenly bringing in less than half the profit it was with the subscription model?
There are 2 ways they can go with a free to play model.
1) Make the entire game free and not really take anything away from people. Result: People aren't spending money anymore, game goes dark because the profits dropped below what NCSoft finds acceptable.
2) Make the game free, but charge people small amounts for every little thing they do. Result: The game starts bleeding players like an arterial wound and the game goes dark because not enough people are even playing anymore to provide a profit level NCSoft finds acceptable.
If this game's profits drop below the threshold of what NCSoft will support and stays there for more than a couple months, they WILL pull the plug on it. They've done it at least 3 times now, and I don't think they'll hesitate to do it again. NCSoft does not CARE about your play experience, they care about their bottom line. Caring about our play experience is the individual dev teams' jobs. NCSoft just decides whether or not they will support a game.
The only way a free to play model is going to happen is if the devs can guarantee NCSoft that the game will continue to be profitable using that model. Looking at games that have failed after going free to play, that's going to be a real tough sell.
Is my outlook on this a little pessimistic? Yes, but it's also very realistic. If CoH goes free to play, I'll be anticipating the game being shut down within 18 months. -
We had a similar discussion at lunch today. We were talking about how the Marvel Movies are borrowing a lot from their Ultimate Line of books. To the purist (aka diehard comic canon person) a lot of the Ultimate stuff is trash and they would rather see the Nightcrawler that was rescue by Xavier from villagers than the Nightcrawler that was used as a weapon against the president to spark a mutant war.
I don't mind them "modernizing" orgin tales to make them more accessable to a wider audience. That, in theory, should mean the movies will became more sucessful and they will make more of them.
I guess the issue is when does "modernizing" result in distorting beyond recognition? Lex Luther as a world conquerer or Lex Luther as wanting oceanside property in Arizona? Pheonix as eating stars and killing billions of aliens, or Pheonix wanting to bump uglies with Wolverine and desintigrating Cyclops? -
Liz, I admit I did not use the search function to see if there was another thread that talked about how one would turn COH into a F2P. I did take your suggestion, however, to see what models were discussed in those other threads but couldn't find any other thread (my search-fu must be weak). Could you help please? The ideas in this thread were creative, so now I want to see what other people might have said.
-
I take offense to your post. You may disagree with the topic I presented in this thread, but making a personal attack on me is uncalled for and rude.

Quote:. . . For the purposes of this thread, let us assume F2P was seriously being looked at and a redname posted here asking for input/ideas on how is should be implemented.
Again, this is not a debate as to IF it should be done, but your ideas of HOW is should be done.Quote:I would not do it!! - Tabby Cat
Thank you. -
In the Q Earnings thread there was/is a debate about whether or not CoX should go F2P (free 2 play: relying on micro-transactions for money). For the purposes of this thread, let us assume F2P was seriously being looked at and a redname posted here asking for input/ideas on how is should be implemented.
Again, this is not a debate as to IF it should be done, but your ideas of HOW is should be done.
Please keep in mind that the forum rules prohibit speaking about other games (people were admonished for doing this in the other thread). So while you may be tempted to say CoX should be like XXXXX, please be more specific as to the details.
Here is my idea:
Have both subscription and F2P. The subscription player would get everything we get already. Still have to pay for boosters but at half cost.
The F2P player would only get:
- 2 character slots per server (can purchase more)
- have to pay full price for boosters
- have to pay one time fee for entering PvP zones
- have to pay a one time fee for entering Pocket D (this would not allow you Itrials - see below)
- have to pay a one time fee for entering MA
-have to pay a fee per character you want to incarante
This is what I got off the top of my head. I figured this plan would not "screw over" subscribers, and still make money off of peoples' desires to create alts.
Please share your own F2P plan. -
I would so delete my MA/Ninja stalker (soft-capped; lvl 43) and reroll as a MA/Ninja scrapper if they ported that set over. Please?

I have a lvl 50 blueside brute with a APP pool. I want to ditch the APP and get a patron pool.
1) Can I access the patron as a vig or do I have to go villian?
2) Will the parton dude talk to me and let me run their arcs if I have APP's?
3) Have to I get the patron pools?
4) Do I have to do the resepc redside and slot the pools or can I go back blueside and then respec the patron pool in?
Thanks for your advice; I haven't ever done patron stuff before. -
You say it was a wasted 90 minutes, but I can't believe that the harassment was like that the whole time. If it was, then why in world did you subject your child to that. If you disagree with how a team leader treats you or your child on her team, then quit the team. ITF's form often enough to jump on another team or you can easily form your own.
My daughter has asked to play the game with me, but being that the game is Rated Teen for a reason (usually language and adult content from other players i nthis game), we end up playing something more age appropriate that we both can enjoy.
I am sorry this 16 year old girl upset you to the point where you want to quit the game. Bt perhaps it is for the best that you leave it if you find it harmful to your child (similar to turning off bad TV that your child is watching if it goes against your teachings). -
Wow, all your effort really paid off. Nicely done. The only thing separating your book from mainstream ones is that Golden Girl didn't bend over that much and you couldn't squeeze a shower scene in there with Ms. Liberty.
-
Coming late to the party (as always), I just watch the Last Air Bender and now want to make a character (doesn't matter red or blueside in that I have GR) that fights using the elements.
My playstyle is more along the lines of PvE, teaming often, not farming, melee fighter. Although I have 50's in most AT's, I am finding myself playing scrappers and brutes more. Kinda wish they had Ice melee and armor for scrappers and brutes in that not in a mood for another tank right now.
Elemental sets I can draw from for scrappers are:
Fire/
/Fire
Kinectic Melee/ (air control)
Elect/
/Elect (already have a lvl 40 dark/elect scrapper so shying away from this set)
Sets from Brutes
Fire/
/Fire
Kinectic Melee/ (air control)
Elect/
/Elect
SM/
/Stone (may be too slow for me; or expensive to make fast)
(Also know i can make Dark fire-ish with proper coloring)
Leaning towards the following builds:
KM/Fire Scrapper
KM/Fire Brute
SM/Fire
Two questions:
1) Am I missing any combinations, and two
2) Of the three I am leaning towards, what would you recommend?
Thanks for your comments and hve a great weekend -
Looking at a melee character for PvE teamage. I have played scrappers and brutes to 50's before but never these power sets. Do the sets matter that much in this situation? Is it still the same crits vs more HP vs fury?
The simple question is, would you build a KM/Fire scrapper or a KM/Fire brute if given the inclination and the slot?
Thanks in advance for your advise. -
Going for an elemental theme melee fighter using sets I have never used before. This limits the choices to stone melee, kinect melee (for air control), and fire armor.
Questions:
1) For a brute, between SM/Fire and KM/Fire, which would you recommend?
2) If the choice ended up being KM/Fire, should I go brute or scrapper?
Playstyle and other considerations:
I PvE exclusively; like to run on teams and do occasional TFs, I typically IO my characters around lvl 27 but don't invests in purples; not really planning on farming with them.
Thanks in advance for you suggestions. Been having an internal debate for a time and figured I would here from the experts. -
Just installed GR on this computer and the first screen will check for updates then same it is downloading file manifest, but nothing seems to happen after that.
Is this part of the new bug a lot of ppl are experiencing or is this something different?
-ps: I tried the checksum solution but that didn't help at all. -
Just installed GR on two of my folks computers and the updater screen is stuck at "checking updater"
Please help. -
Well, that stinks. May just have to try and make money with my 50 and give it to the lower alts so that they can pay the outragioues (sp) prices.

Quote:With all the toggles I am running, Carnies scare me. I initially thought of council and 5th also but just ran a (few missions the incarnant arc) and it looks like I may not be soft-capped versus AOE's as i thought.Carnies. Seriously. They die easily against slashing damage. If you're actually playing Spines/SR I'm sure you've also built for recovery.
I'd make a custom group with Carnie minions and lieutenants, and Infernal Demon bosses. You can mix in others, as well, like non-mechanical Council and Fifth Column, and add some CoTs as well. -
Dusting off my lvl 50 spines/sr softcapped and was wondering what are good enemies to go after and mow down. I need money and hoping to make a MA map filled with them (no exploits please).
Thank you in advance for your advice. -
I have recently (last night) starting running MA missions because the market seems to be going crazy and I can't afford any lvl 30 recipes for my alts.
I picked a mission with freaks in a warehouse and set my diff to 0/8 and took my lvl 50 spines/sr in it and made about 600 tickets. I then went to the ticket guy and set my lvl at 30 and choose bronze rolls in the lvl 24 to 29 range.
My goal was to get recipes in that range that I could use for my lvl 27 alts (that is the lvl I start IO'ing them.
Unfortunately, I was getting lvl 50 recipes.
Can some one pelase explain what i am doing wrong and what setting I need to do to get my desired lvl range of recipes.
Thanks -
I was going to suggest Kin (perhaps a fire/kin corruptor since u like range, but when I read this suggestion, I said "forgot about the stormies."
One of my first characters years ago was a storm/dark defender (this is before GR so now I would roll it as a corruptor). That character had me thinking every fight. With storm, it is what powr to use and what power NOT to use. Very rarely will you break out everything on a team setting because the chaos you can create is awesome (as people who have seen me play my lvl 45 illision/storm cont can attest to.
I think you mentioned a kin/rad. For some reason mine stalled at 3o, but I think thre were RL problems at the time and not so much that set. Perhaps I'll pick her up again.
good luck with your hunt. -
