  1. I've been meaning to update this and work on the arc again but haven't had the time.

Cheers for the constructive feedback Tangler.

Hopefully I'll be able to work on it again soon using your advice, preferably before the badge grind of Xmas is upon us!

This may just be a UK thing - the saying goes that you spend ages waiting for a bus and then three come along at once. Not sure about the six. But it's a definite saying.

Having said that, due to the absence of buses in PC and RI, how about you log out at a bus stop and receive the 'Loiterer' or 'Time Waster' badge instead?

Ah, you must be confusing that with the next Booster Pack: V - Disco Fever.

We're getting animated bellbottoms, 20 new afro hairstyles, 5 new disco dance emotes and a new temp power: Disco Ball. It's a PBAoE that works a lot like Flash. It does minor energy damage and blinds (with a small chance for a special kind of hold*) targets. In this respect it is much like the PPD Shell power that makes your character vomit. Except your enemies start dancing instead and can't stop (at least for 10 seconds - scaled to Lts and Bosses, natch).
Oh and the animation plays out with the ball descending followed by your character shouting 'Oh Yeah!". I hear Isaac Hayes has just finished doing the sound recordings.
And those who have downloaded the booster pack will find that NPCs recognise them in the street. Looking at the files, the following text piqued my interest:

[NPC] Karen: Who's that man/woman walkin' down the street?

PS - I may have been making all of that up.

Everything is checked as yes (to uploading images, signatures, even using GIFs (I know, it's a jpeg)) - what am I doing wrong?

PS - we Brits do know the difference between genders :P. When the Sweet Dreams (are made of this) video was first shown on MTV in the USA, the channel withdrew it after complaints that they wanted proof of Annie Lennox's gender. They argued that her appearance would corrupt young people until the matter was resolved. True story.

The Circle mystics were suddenly caught between two groups of what appeared to be a mish-mash of the City’s superheroes.

The girl who had vaulted from the sky had floored three of the twelve robed figures and their knives clattered to the ground.

“We should not have waited!” Hissed one of the remaining figures.

In response to the intrusion the mysterious figures readied their knives and rushed towards the girl. Simultaneously the figures near to Balgair and the woman surrounded by magical energy raised their knives in the air and then brought them down, signalling for their demonic back-up which hovered in the air above to cover their comrades.

“Keep the congressman safe!” Another of the figures cried as it readied its sharp, gleaming knife. “He must be taken alive!”

Magical energy swirled around the spectral demons overhead and blasts of dark power hit the tarmac around the Circle mystics and the estate carrying the congressman. Their howls grew louder as they concentrated their fire into a circle, trying to prevent the intruders from reaching the remaining mystics.

Matron Knowles put down the receiver and looked to her staff: her four nurses stood in the small office looking concerned. Nurse Geoffries was the first to speak:

“We had better inform the other wards that there may well be more heroes incoming this evening.”

The Matron nodded to her colleague who exited the room.

“You three may as well stand down for now. Once Nurse Geoffries has contacted the other wards then please inform her that she is to take a break too.”

The three remaining nurses nodded their assent and made their way to the break room.

After a few minutes, Matron Knowles picked up the phone and hurriedly dialled a number. The phone was answered and she spoke in hushed tones:

“The plan has been breached… No, I don’t know how either… Yes, yes of course I know how important it is… Very well. I will phone you again once he has been secured.”

The Matron put the phone down quietly, worry streaked across her face. She looked at a list of patients, checked her watch, and hurried out of the office in the direction of the morgue.

  10. Hello

I'm rubbish at doing any kind of screen-grabbing/making things look purdy and my skills, as they are, are non-existent when it comes to doing artwork for my signature.

So, would someone kindly volunteer to do a bit of art for me?

I have a particular piece I'd like to have as my sig as I've just posted my first Open RP (as a plot-runner) on the Roleplay section anhd have grabbed some images I'd quite like to have up whilst it's running. /cheap_plug

Email addresses etc can be sorted out via PM.

"The VIP will be arriving shortly, doctor. Any last minute instructions for my staff?"

Matron Angela Knowles, resident at Bell Point Hospital for the past 20 years, stood attentively in the staff room of Florence Ward - a ward for non-supers in a city chock-full of meta humans. She had seen much hardship and tragedy, especially in the past 10 years, with civilians caught up in the troubles of super-powered beings fighting in the streets.

Opposite her was Doctor Alan Carson, a consultant surgeon who specialised in spinal injuries. He was a typical doctor; neatly-parted hair, bespectacled, conservatively dressed, in his mid-50s and with the kind of face that gave little away.

"Very good, Matron. Just stick to the plan we drafted and all should go well. It's imperative that the cong- I mean, our VIP, be treated as if he were made of glass. That is, urm, to say that his condition is terribly fragile."

The two medical professionals nodded to each other and Matron Knowles made her way to the nurses' station to make sure her staff were fully-prepared.

    Valor Bridge, 02:15

A convoy of cars moved slowly across the bridge, coming from the direction of Brickstown. The drivers were tense as they had been forced to make a detour from the main road due to a group of Freakshow who were rioting. Several of the city's Heroes could be seen in the rear view mirror, swooping across the sky and casting down balls of energy at the Freaks.

As the convoy made slow progress over the bridge, the driver of the central car looked out of the window and saw groups of Tsoo and Family consorting amongst the shadows cast by the steel struts and wires that held the suspension bridge together. The driver caught the eye of one particular Tsoo, who flashed a dagger which caught the moonlight and who made slashing motions across his throat.

In the back seat of this particular car - a souped-up and modified estate - lay a man under the supervision of a burly, male nurse. The laying man was rigged up to various devices and his pulse registered regularly as a high-pitched beep. His breathing, aided by an oxygen mask, was regular.

One of the motorcycle units up ahead radioed the driver of the 'ambulance':

"Come in Charlie. Having problems. Seems to be an obstruction in the road. Roger."

The driver, presumably Charlie, sighed and slowed the car to a stop.

"We'll have to try turning around. Get a message through to Bell Point and tell them we're delayed further. Roger."

Matron Knowles checked her watch and sighed. She went over the staffing rota again:
    1. Nurse Geoffries
    2. Nurse Celo
    3. Nurse Brown
    4. Nurse Corzetti
Although her staff were always professional she sensed unease. There had been so much protocol involved in the VIPs scheduled stay at the hospital and a lot of meetings involving officials from New York State. There had even been rumours that Statesman had been consulted on the cong- the VIPs visit.

Four nurses had been requested for the care of their special guest, which was unusual, and the best of the best had been assembled; Nurse Geoffries and Corzetti had worked at Bell Point nearly as long as the Matron had been there; Nurse Brown had been sequestered from Skyway's medical facility; and Nurse Celo, a relatively new member of staff, had come to the hospital with excellent references from her previous employers in New York.

The Matron finished checking the rota, looked at her watch again absentmindedly and called her crack team on the intercom for one last run-through of procedures.

Charlie wasn't entirely sure what had happened but there was blood on his face. He was drowsy and cold and he could feel the wind in his hair. If he had looked up he might have noticed that the roof of the estate car had been ripped clean off.

The sky had grown unnaturally dark, it having been a full moon. All around the convoy, which for the most part was now motorcycles with dismounted riders and upturned cars with their occupants caught in twisted metal and lying in broken glass, swirling shapes like spectres hovered and howled.

Robed figures came out of the darkness, carrying sharp knives. Their eyes glowed green and their faces were obscured by thick hoods. They encircled Charlie's car, with its vulnerable passenger inside. The male nurse lay slumped against the back window, smears of blood stained the glass where he had been thrown backwards and hit his head.

The figures with their sharp knives hesitated, waiting for some unholy order to no doubt finish what their spectral companions had started.

Charlie tried to gasp but quickly realised that if he alerted the men to his presence then he might as well have died in the initial attack. He gingerly reached for his radio and began searching for the police frequency, hoping that someone was listening - preferably someone that could stop those murderous men from getting to the man lying in the back of the car. For who else could they be after?

  12. The points raised about Rock and Roll, Soul, Jazz and Blues are pretty good ones.

Also the exposure to American music/films in other countries is generally quite a lot. I used to live with a Swedish woman who had a very American accent when she spoke because she got acclimatised to speaking English watching a lot of American films.

I had a friend at school who had a nice voice but insisted on singing in a nasal American accent. His reason being that a lot of bands he liked sang like that. So imitation is another factor.

I think musicals and, more specifically, musical singing has a lot to do with it too - a music teacher friend told me that American English vowels are generally more open than British English vowels which helps with voice production. Also, a lot of musicals are American! (Oklahoma! Carousel, Annie, Wicked - to name but four).

And finally, have you ever tried singing a Country & Western song with a British English accent? I have a couple of Shawn Colvin CDs (okay, not technically C&W but she is from the South!) and she did a fantastic cover of You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go - it sounds a lot better with an American (Country) accent than a British one.

Oh and Kate Bush - very British accent. And occasionally Australian, Irish and I may be mistaken but I'm sure she did a song with a Jamaican accent once...
  13. Really enjoying what you've done so far, especially the City Rep names one!

So what are your plans for future webcomics? Sewer Runs? Task Forces? Paper Missions?

    Keep up the good work!
  14. There is news so this is not an official bump!

I have worked on the (new) final mission of Serious Business and have made a few changes to the previous missions. I think I've suffered a bit from poor timing as now the Hallowe'en events are underway I am guessing people have less time/desire to test arcs as opposed to review full-fledged ones.

I have encountered one major problem however - I edited the published mission but saved it as a separate file so that the published version remains intact. Is there a quick and easy way to integrate my changes into the published arc without having to unpublish and republish, getting a new Arc ID number?
  15. These three have possibly already been requested but here goes:

The Mercy Clocktower map - Defeat All Snakes in Area - from Kalinda

Johnny Sonata's - Defeat Johnny's Soul (or similar) - at the end of his arc - it's the smallish cave with the central 'teeth' rock formation where his soul is standing, waiting to be whooped.

The burned Crey lab in Tavish Bell's arc where you have to defeat the Demon. I just love that map and cannot find it in the MA. It has much potential.

And, of course, maps such as the Cloning Lab and the Burning Forest need to be there!
  16. Cheers

I've found my villainous groove this time. I just hope I haven't gone too far with the gory details - although I think a certain man by the name of Westin Phipps has had a profound effect on me!
  17. Hello all, it's been a fair long while since I took down my two Storyland In Danger! arcs, declaring that I could do better.

I've had an idea playing round in my head since I bought CoH back in July 2004 and, well, I've 'written' it in the form of a medium-sized MA arc.

It needs a lot of criticism of the constructive kind, feedback, group/solo testing and so I decided to bite the bullet and publish it in its first draft form.

I am aware that it is not finished so if you want to rate it as well as test play it then feel free, although I will probably be taking it down and publishing again once I've had the feedback and made any changes, added bits or taken them away.

If you find that after you've played it there's just too darned much info you need to give to me and not enough space in the feedback box then PM me and I will hand out my email address.

I really like, in a very subjective way, what I've done so far in terms of story but knowing how I wrote the last arcs there are bound to be glaring plot holes or inconsistencies that my tired eyes just cannot see.

    Please be gentle
  18. I'm not a numbers person so I'm not even going to attempt it but here are a few of my observations over the years regarding 'armour' sets:

Scrappers and Brutes benefit more from the 'soft control' sets such as Dark. And from 'pure' Defence/Resistance sets, (i.e. Super Reflexes and, again, Dark) Of course anyone can successfully play any of the armours but the ones that proliferated from Scrappers/Brutes to Tanks (and in some respects Stalkers) seem to work better with the Primaries of those ATs.

Willpower, imho, is a fantastic Tanker set. I'm currently levelling a Claws/Willpower Brute and, shock horror, have respecced into Fitness instead of Tough/Weave etc due to Endurance issues. This might be because Claws is a much lower damage set (albeit Fury-building fiend) than the other Brute primaries so meant I was attacking more. A Willpower Tank I once played however could pretty much stand up to anything and for a long period of time with no Endurance issues.

Stalkers, with the exception of Ninjitsu, do get a bit of a rough deal. I must say I'd probably never choose a Repel power for a Stalker and playing as a Ninjitsu Stalker was incredibly good fun (especially once I'd gotten Blinding Powder which, coupled with Touch of Fear from the Dark Melee Primary, made EB fights more fun for me).

I also once rolled a Mind/Sonic controller who, for the most part, wasn't very much fun to play. She ended up as a bit of a buff bot and considering two of her major powers involved Sleep, wasn't particularly useful in large teams. I should imagine that Ice Control/Sonic or Force Field would have a similar problem with the disadvantage of not having any major attack powers until later in the game.

But all things considered I'd say that, unless you want a new kind of challenge, you don't have to take any of the sets/powers that are on offer and it's true that some sets gel together better than others.

Also there is, in some cases, a good reason why some powers within a set don't appear to be as powerful as they could be. My example there is Psychic Blast for Defenders. The first power in the Secondary (and you HAVE to take it) is Mental Blast. It does damage not worth worrying about, albeit psionic, and the animation is a little long. However the rest of the powers in the set are pretty damned awesome (especially Psionic Tornado) and with certain combinations of powers can prove devastating to enemies.

And, of course, Storm Summoning: Gale, which for Defenders is skippable but not for MMs, Corruptors or Controllers - It needs accuracy slotting which could be better spent elsewhere and it has a nasty tendency to draw aggro and split groups of enemies up when all you possibly wanted to do was get rid of the Freakshow Tank who had latched on to you. But again, the rest of Storm is pretty darned freaking awesome!

Relax, Ravenswing always does this. I think it's his way of feeling superior to others.

The notion of a very powerful character isn't exactly new and for that reason I think it's easy for me to fall into the trap of going: It's not cool to admit that having that kind of power and changing the World into a 'Utopia' is a viable option - therefore I am morally outraged! Free Will is more important than anything else.

Well, if I had that power and I was being totally honest with myself, I probably would try and turn the World into something that I wanted it to be.

The argument for me is how emotionally attached the character feels to the rest of the World. Why would Facade want to do this if a) it weren't for something that has already happened to him? or b) he has some kind of mental instability which alters his own perception of reality and leads him to not taking into account the actual feelings of others around him?

It's less philosophical and more psychological but those are the questions I'd ask and points I'd raise.

D'you think that might be to do with the games other players have come from, where grinding non-stop is the norm?

Don't get me wrong, I know that pretty much all MMOs have a degree of grinding involved. It's the nature of the beast.

As for farming/exploiting - I'm glad that it sounds as if the stupid exploiting on a grand scale is dying down. I like sewer teams when I've had enough of 'Defeat 5 Hellions' or 'Go See Iris Parker'. I must admit I occasionally miss the Tech origin teams who go up against silly amounts of Clockwork (who, like Vazhilok, have slightly higher experience value due to their mez/damage types) at 1-5. I also miss the old 'Defeat 10 Circle' in Per--- No scratch that! I will NEVER miss that mission .

Sewer teams, imo, are a good thing. Teams doing the very first missions are also a good thing. People hanging out in Atlas AE from 1-50 is not a good thing.

Sewer teams, I've always thought, aren't at great risk because of the power balance being tipped in a Hero's favour until level 10 or so (when suddenly enemies have greater resistances to things, some of them have better Defence and To Hit etc.). So whilst hitting large mobs at breakneck pace is technically farming, I don't think it's an exploit that must be stopped. And it's still a pretty good way to learn about mob perception and not wading in to a congregation of Lost Anathemas just because that last group of Hellions went down really easily.

I get the blaster thing, what I don't think I can follow is a demon summoning anything using that power for good. Just my two RP cents but if you are talking "demons" in the classic sense then why would they want the souls of those already "damned" as it were.
Regardless of RP sense (which is often foiled by changes in game lore/too many attempts to tie in game mechanics with IC action => IC consequence - imho of course ) Infernal is a Hero that uses Demons.

And I'm still unsure just how heroic the power Beheader is too...

In a good way of course.

Car paint also makes a good hair product/dye - but remember to wash it out before you go to bed or the pilow will end up a funny colour (Blue in my case - this was a few years ago now...)
