  1. I've been running RC since it was released, and haven't had any issues getting past the login screen, so I don't think it's the OS.

For curiosity's sake, have you tried starting in Safe Mode?

Also, not that it's likely affecting this, but if you're running RC, why do you have Dell programs running?

My hair has been so long for the past 20 years that I get it stuck in my guitar strings sometimes... that sucks when i'm shreding.

    [/ QUOTE ]

My problem with hair was never shredding. Just shedding.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I was using red ink at the time, and the receptionist walked in as I was pulling my head back from the rollers. She thought I was dying, had to stop her from calling 911. Once I was over the intial surprise/fright, i thought it was dang funny.
  3. [ QUOTE ]
Strangely, I'm too much of a hippie to use hair products other than the stuff that makes it clean. There's a bit of a weird story to it all. I grow out my hair because I grew up in a religious semi-cult that didn't do long hair on men (or mustaches), so I grow it out now; however, I'm stuck to the idea of men not using hair gels/spray/mousse/etc. The only hair-holder thing a guy can get away with is a hairband while engaged in athletic pursuits, which is better than nothing.

    [/ QUOTE ]

First thing I did when I started living on my own was to grow my hair out. My mother hated long hair on guys, so it was not much of an option while at home. Grew it out and just let it hang until it was at my shoulder, then got it caught in a printing press. Painful and messy but not a big deal and switched to a pony tail. Grew it out until it was past the middle of my back, but since it's curley the pony tail was maybe 5 inches long.

Went from the ponytail to a shaved head one day, but had to give that up because the wife didn't like it. Well that and the sunburns through the vent holes in the hardhat I wore.

I had to use conditioner on it when it was long, just to be able to get a comb through it when it was wet.

When I was in HS I tended to draw the Freshmen girls. Not just when I was a Freshman, but throughout my entire stay. :/

Feh. At least you attracted women. I was never anything more than friend material in high school.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ya know, this is what I thought too. Apparently that wasn't the case, it was me being oblivious. Not sure I'm any better off knowing the truth though.
  5. [ QUOTE ]
I don't mind the way I look either. I'm not..."Fat" per se, but a bit overweight. And I have a goatee, which gives me a sexy fayse . It's not like I get actively pursued by girls, but every once in a while at the store I'll get looked at.

Unfortunately it's usually some old gramma.

I also recommend you all try playing a couple of characters from 1-50 without any dev tricks, just as a normal player, to see how grindy things are. Then go on a couple of farm missions with some friends and see how fun the leveling can be in comparison.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I level all my characters 'without any dev tricks'. I have only four 50's to show for it, but those 50s mean far more to me than any 50 I could have gotten sitting in a farm with my thumb up my [censored]. If you honestly think the game is grindy, by all means give Lineage II a try. CoH's XP curve makes Lineage II's look like a sheer cliff.

    [/ QUOTE ]

One last time...the whole OP was directed AT THE DEVS. That includes the PS. Since when can players invoke dev tricks? And by dev tricks I was referring to auto-leveling, extra powers, free influence, etc. All the stuff they do to test random things but fails to give an accurate portrayal of the actual gameplay.

I want the devs now to buff up reading comprehension in the next patch.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You're assuming that none of the developers also play the game to have fun, or that they almost exclusively rely on 'dev tricks' to break their own game.

Are you aware of what assumption makes you...?

    Merely curious.

EDIT: And if one flat-out told you he did play the game 'honest', would you even believe them?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Do I believe any of them have played the game from 1-50 as a normal player without giving in to the urge to use the power at their disposal? Nope. It gets too tedious once you get into the 30s.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Tedious for you maybe. Took me almost 2 years for my first 50, too many alts and a lot of debt.

Tedious for me is trying explainining to someone on a Numina TF where Creys Folly is.
"Hmmm lvl 42 and no vet badges...." Probably no correlation there huh?
  10. I'd second a storm/ice. So many targeted AoE's it's tough to see anything through the orange number flying up when you drop it on a big spawn. I haven't bothered with the holds, but I run with SG mates primarily so haven't missed them.
  11. Sorry I didn't get back to this yesterday.

Here's one that will monitor and control 5 fans. They're out of stock for this place, but you could likely find one somewhere else.

Also the same store has probably one of the larger selections for controllers and monitors. A little expensive, but I've never had an issue with anything I bought here.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
Hey guys, first off thanks to everyone that chimed in on my vista question the other day now for part two!

The case I'm getting has alot of fans in it, and reviewed as being rather loud, so I'm looking to get a fan controller/temp sensor it. Can anyone suggest something that works well and quite honestly looks decent? I've been all over xoxide, tiger, and newegg and the reviews are all so mixed that I don't know what to get...

any ideas would be much appreciated

    [/ QUOTE ]

So, are you looking for something that automatically controls fan speed, or just a series of pots, where you can do it manually?

Like the look of those Dell minis, would have talked my wife into one of those rather than me building her last one if they had been around. Unfortunately my mother like to sit in her easy chair watching the food network while using the laptop, so the mini won't work. Definatley cool though.

    Frost
But those I'm a PC and I'm a Mac commercials imply that macs never have any issues! She's hip enough not to buy into the popups telling her she's infected. Of course thats a result of our "if it sounds too good to be true" talk about offers on the internet.
Thanks though, just the sort of info I was looking for concerning macs.

    NotCold
I thought about a netbook intially, but I suspect the size of the screen is an issue. As she's in her mid 60's I think the bigger the better as far as screen size goes. I'm still going to suggest she look at them though, just in case.

    RadDidIt
Gateway huh, hadn't thought about that, was just looking at best buy, and while I loathe them (for purely personal reasons) looked like they had some decent deals. I'll pass along the Gateway idea to her.

Awesome help guys, keep it comning if you have anymore advice.

As someone else who's stuck in the hell of "Family Tech Support Monkey", suggesting a platform you cannot fix is not the way to reduce family aggro. If anything, it'll increase it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

What about my aggro? You are right though.

Well I'd also hope that with all I hear about Mac's there wouldn't be any issues to call me about, but that's likely wishful thinking on my part. Just really looking for something that won't necessitate me feeling guilty because I can't walk my mother through the solution over the phone.

"Tech Support Monkey" is a great term.
I've thrown the towel in on the inlaw's computer too, because the brother inlaw has installed a bunch of software to "help" protect them from viruses and trojans, but now the computer is running slow...
  17. I knew the call was coming eventually.

So my mother calls me last night, looking for advice on a new laptop as her 6-7 year old Dell is having trouble starting, and the hinges from the screen are starting to crack. Problem is, I don't know much about laptops, and she lives 600 miles away, so I’m looking for some advice on what to suggest for her.

She’s in her mid 60’s and primarily uses the laptop for internet surfing, word processing, and I believe she has some dedicated programs related to her work, (nothing intensive, think they’re just papers in a funky format).

Any advice on what to suggest to her as far necessary hardware and/or manufacturers? I did tell her that if she found some she was interested in to get the model number and we could discuss hardware. I also suggested she look at a Mac which she was initially against, but did agree to stop into a store and check them out.

The Mac suggestion is just me being selfish I think. Just so I can say, “sorry Mom, don’t know anything about Macs when she calls with a problem and tries to describe it over the phone…

    @Endless (an SG)

Little surprised at some of the names on here, and yet no one's teamed with these guys.

Friend of mine is a member, as a result I've teamed with them a few times over the years. Always seemed friendly, and never saw any griefing. Caught the edge of some drama once, but no worse then I've seen in any other SG.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
Any suggestions? Ideas? I'm out... and basically can't play at all at this point (never logs in). I'd think it was network but it can't even bring up the login screen for many minutes.

The part that bothers me in general is that my wifes laptop runs it fine running on far less specs than I've got. It's snappier than vista was for her.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Out of curiosity, how did you reinstall CoH after installing Win 7, was it a fresh install?
  21. [ QUOTE ]
I appear to be one of the poor saps that is having a problem after install. Every time I try and launch CoH, it shuts down before I get to the logon screen. I've tried various switches and starting in safe mode, but so far nothing has helped at all.

I'm thinking about doing a fresh install, but if anyone has any suggestions before I re-install CoH, I'd appreciate it!

    [/ QUOTE ]

I did a fresh install of RC yeasterday from the beta and had a similiar issue. Renamed the checksum extensions to *.old so CoH wouldn't see them. This forced CoH to do a checksum and verification. Took a little bit, <10minutes but afterwards the game loaded. Not sure if it will help you but it's worth a shot.
  22. [ QUOTE ]

My current machine is gasping, so I'm looking for a new one. I have never built one from scratch, so I'd rather have one pre-built.

In the past I went with Alienware, and loved it, but that was pre-Dell. Cyberpowerpc runs lots of adds, but I have heard horror stories about their service.

Basically, what components should I be looking for, and where should I be shopping?

I'm am hoping to be spending $600-$900 for the box ( I have all the other stuff.)

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm not pushing you to build one, but for those of us who do build there was a time when we had never built one either. It's not difficult, and you can save a fair amount.

I believe Father Xmas has several builds at differing $ amounts in his sig.
  23. [ QUOTE ]
If it were up to me, I'd simply remove all rewards from any run of an MA mission after the first on a per character basis.

    Why?

Because there's hundreds of pages of arcs, foremost. The odds of anyone ever "running out" of missions on the MA is slim to non-existent. Limiting rewards to one run per mission per character ensures that more of that content will get seen/played by others. (Not to mention helping out the authors, by increasing the odds that more than just a handful of missions will get played.)

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I have no problem with people standing in the MA and grinding missions all day long if that's what they want to do. What I have problems with is the specific act of "farming", which (to me) is running the same mission(s) over and over and over.

Of course, that still doesn't cover how to stop missions being built as farms, but it would be a step in the right direction, I would think.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I like the idea, but couldn't the arc just be unpublished and republished then?
