Windows 7 RC1 - Connection issue

OK, I have tried everything. Changed the compatibility settings to XP (Both COHUpdater and CityofHeroes.exe). I tried clicking off the desktop checkbox I saw recommended in another thread. I updated the drivers, I believe.

the problem i that I cannot get through the Area Login screen (I actually did get through twice, but that was random).

When I login, the initial user name screen takes longer. I am then able to select a server and character. Then, it slowly opens up the area login screen and I never get past this, timing out after a few minutes back to the login screen. the bar at the bottom maybe gets 25% through. The reason I think this is a connection issue is I did a new download and reinstall of the software, I lost connection many of times during this data download. It seems that this is the problem when I am trying to load through the area screen.

Any thoughts?

Stop using a prerelease OS?

Way to be unhelpful. How will bugs be fixed in the OS if no one tries to run things in the pre-release? Do you think the copy of Vista or XP that you run was somehow magically perfect? I beta test ALL of MS' operating systems - so that YOU don't have to when you get it loaded on your Dell.

Well legitimately testing the OS is one thing, simply installing it because you had a problem with Vista, or too cheap to buy even an OEM copy of an OS and then wonder why nobody can help you with your beta OS running beta drivers with a game that has yet been approved for Vista, that's another story.

Microsoft short circuited the kind of volunteer tech support you will find on this forum by releasing Vista SP2 around the same time as Win 7 RC1 since the experienced professionals here know better than install an OS before its SP2 is released unless pushed by those higher up on the food chain who don't remember what happened last time everyone jumped in head first before knowing how deep the water is. So we are finally getting around to install Vista and Microsoft starts pushing out Windows 7.

I haven't parsed your CoH Helper data, but I've been running the RC since Saturday and haven't experienced the problem you report (except I'm using the 64-bit version). Ran a whole Manti TF on Saturday without issue. So it has to be something specific with your setup. I'll try taking a look at your report, but maybe one of the regulars can also lend a hand?

Thanx Obsidius, any assistance or direction is greatly appreciated.

I've been running RC since it was released, and haven't had any issues getting past the login screen, so I don't think it's the OS.

For curiosity's sake, have you tried starting in Safe Mode?

Also, not that it's likely affecting this, but if you're running RC, why do you have Dell programs running?
C:\Program Files\DellSupport\DSAgnt.exe
C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe

I wonder if this is a memeroy issue. You have 2GB, which is good, but I see a lot of extra programs running, like Roxio, EA Core, PowerDVD, Dell Support software, and other things running in the background that don't need to start up every time you run your computer. The OS itself requires 1GB to operate, AFAIR.

Noticeably missing, AFAICT, is any sort of AV solution. Do you have any anti-virus on your computer? If not, at least download and install AVG Free Version. I'm using that right now with my testing with no issues so far.

When you run the Task Manager (CTRL+Shift+ESC) and start CoH, what happens with the CPU and memory usage? I'd be curious to see the results myself.

Also, would it be possible to run dxdiag and print that report as well?

One other thought: I assume you installed the Dell software to get the system as close to your previous XP or Vista build, but did you download and install the mobo drivers as well? If not, it could cause problems with DMAs or IRCs, cause your built-in Ethernet not to function to specs, etc.

Also check your BIOS settings for 'C state' and disable it. Also look for 'Sleep Mode' and set it to S3. This has become an issue particularly with Dell systems..... not sure if its at fault here but its worth a shot!

My wife had the same issue today after updating to RC1. We messed with it for a few hours tonight. Finally even though we didn't think it was on, we double checked compatibility mode and it was on. As soon as she turned it off the game started working immediately.

Posted

Yeah, I'm not using Compatibility Mode on my client, and it works like clockwork.

Posted

OK, I updated my BIOS drivers, amongst some other driver updates from Dell, and that seems to have corrected the problem.

Thanx to all for their help.

Excellent! Glad to help
