Windows 7, May 5 RC

I wanted to start a Windows 7 discussion. I haven’t seen anyone post one yet, and tell you my experience.
After the install of windows 7 x64 and after only 6 updates from windows, I was up and running great. I copied my coh directory over from my vista drive and was up and running in minutes.
I had to fix the resolution back to 1600x1050, but it was flawless, no compatible cursors, or anything like what vista made us have to do. I was getting well over 50fps. Id have to say Microsoft finally did something right.
This topic is open for all discussions and concerns. I hope everything goes well for everyone else.

I've been running Win 7 since the beta opened up in January....I was never fond of Vista, it didn't run well on some of my lower end systems, but they've sold me on Win 7. I'll be investing in this when it goes to the shelves.

I appear to be one of the poor saps that is having a problem after install. Every time I try and launch CoH, it shuts down before I get to the logon screen. I've tried various switches and starting in safe mode, but so far nothing has helped at all.

I'm thinking about doing a fresh install, but if anyone has any suggestions before I re-install CoH, I'd appreciate it!

everything is running great for me so far, except that i think i need more RAM now as everything in CoH loads slower for me under 7 than it did under XP. otherwise it's fine.

also, the install process from the Architect disc took forever! i don't know why, it zoomed on XP, but in 7RC it took soooo long to extract the piggs.

I did a fresh install of RC yeasterday from the beta and had a similiar issue. Renamed the checksum extensions to *.old so CoH wouldn't see them. This forced CoH to do a checksum and verification. Took a little bit, <10minutes but afterwards the game loaded. Not sure if it will help you but it's worth a shot.

Let me add some details, see if anyone can point me to any possible resolutions:

Running CoH on a laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics card. Ran smooth as butter in Vista 64...everything maxed out, not a single glitch ever.

Did an upgrade install of Windows 7 on top of my existing OS. Everything went swimmingly, no errors at all, all devices recognized and running fine. Only app that does not run correctly is CoH. Every time I would try and launch it, it would spin for a few seconds, and then come back with a "City of Heroes is being shut down" error.

I made sure all of my drivers were updated. They looked fine, using Windows Update. I tried all of the various switches I could find, and none of them made a difference.

So I upgraded my drivers to the catalyst Vista 64 drivers. Now I could get CoH to launch, but I got strobing video (flashing all over the place. I could get on, log on, everything worked, but video wise it was unplayable.)

This point I did a fresh install of CoH. Same issue. So I rolled back the driver to the Windows 7 driver version. Now I can get the game to launch, but I still have the strobing video problem.

So, before i go back and re-format and re-install everything again, does anyone have any ideas about what may be wrong? I think that since I'm going to be re-formatting and re-installing, I may go ahead and do a completely clean install of Windows 7 instead of an upgrade before i go back to Vista. But any advice would be appreciated!

Warp1: I definitely recommend a completely fresh install of Windows 7. Upgrades can be a little... iffy. Here's to hoping it'll solve it for you!

This is pretty much my experience as well. If there are no reports of major things breaking when doing an upgrade install from XP to W7 I'll be putting it on my main desktop - otherwise I'll be with XP for a while longer.

He upgraded from vista 64 to 7 - which I did on two pcs. First one was a laptop using beta and I get better performance with coh now. (at 8200 video) and a desktop which seems to have fixed my driver not responding with my 260 gtx and updated nvidia win 7 drivers.

I would get the latest cat drivers from amd for win 7 64 bit. Also check your coh.exe to see if it is running with admin rights (i think it needs to). I have not had one issue with win 7 beta or now rc that I can see and I can actually run up to 4 instances of coh smoothly. (granted it is an i7 with 9 GB ram)

Grabbed the latest Cat drivers for win 7 (didn't even know they had them available!) but alas, same issue.
