Quote:So video games aren't considered "kids stuff?" Or comics? It's not the shortening that people take issue with, but the use of "cartoon" at all to refer to a video game character. It, to many people, tends to put forth a more childish image of what it is. ( Yes, I know there are very mature cartoons out there, but the broad perception of a cartoon is still "kids' stuff" ). Shortening a different word to refer to characters wouldn't be met with so much opposition: "char" or "av" ( for "avatar"). "Alt"/"main" tends to work as well
Also, do you watch any cartoons?
-
Quote:I think of a cartoon as anything animated, which video games could fall under. Granted, it's not what I (or most others) generally use it for. When I say "cartoon", I'm never referring to a video game. So, I'm not the one draping it with more meaning than what's really there.
Quote:It's one of those topics that, for some reason, touches a sore spot with some people. Similar to threads complaining about guys playing girl characters, although those are more volatile due to the rampant homophobia... -
That makes sense, I guess.
Although it begs the follow-up question, why did so many respond to this? Seems a bit overcomplicated but whatareyagonnado?

How'd this topic get to 2 pages?

Quote:This.Pretty much that. He's long been the guy above us all and only comes to us directly for help because his long-standing rival has forced him to stay away (see STF).
I remember going through the tutorial of Champions and I was already fighting side-by-side with Defender. We battled through the facility and completed the objective and I still got to be the big hero.
I think I would've made Statesman the first guy we saw in Paragon Instead of being one of the last, the one we never saw till we had to do the old Praetorian Tyrant mission. The original premise was that heroes were coming to Paragon to 'answer the call' so I would've had him inducting the new arrivals and then move into their origin-specific stuff with a hearty goodbye, going off to fight whatever world-ending threat may cross his path at that point and perhaps charging you with defending the city in his absense.

Quote:Mary Sue IS gender specific. The male counterparts are called Gary/Marty Sues.Jason Todd, Bucky Barnes, Uncle Ben.
Give it time.
And while I'm here, just because it bugs me: that earlier article you mentioned about Mary Sues is total bunk.
Luke Skywalker is a Mary Sue, as much as Bella Swan and the others are.
It's not a gender-assigned title unless you let it be. If you say that Mary Sue can't be applied to males, that's the only reason why it can't. I can even go down the list.
And I'd agree that Luke Skywalker is one but only in the OT. He's far more fallible in the books.
Oh, and Uncle Ben hasn't actually been resurected before. Watch for the internet blow-up due to Fanboy Rage if/when that happens!

Quote:Actually, fans really liked Bucky as Cap. That's why he retained the mantle even after Steve came back (just like DG.)Captain America 'dying.' Shot hardcore. "It was a temporal round! It sent him back in time!"
Oh no, Marvel. He was dead.
People were so ticked off that Bucky took up the mantle after Steve got royally shot that they explained it away as a temporal shift round. DUMB.

Better shows than Community have been cancelled sooner so I'm not surrised.

It's called "clarification."
Quote:In the game, you enter a warehouse alone. You see groups of two or three enemies. You decide to call for back-up. You and a friend enter, and now the enemy groups are larger. Call everyone in, and you're still challenged.
In the comics, the result would be your full team beating down two or three enemies at a time, and those enemies are at a level to challenge only one of you. Is that a common occurrence in today's superhero comic books?
And your analogy is flawed due to the natures of the medium. You can't add to a comic the way you can add to this game. Comics aren't interactive.
A better analogy would be to say the writer has an idea about a character and, after thinking about it, realizes the villain would be too powerful for said hero solo so he re-writes the story and includes another hero to help even the odds and make the story make more sense. Or a villain is too under-powered for our heroes so some device/power-up is given to ecplain why Hero Z needs help from Hero Y against someone he normally solos.

Quote:Yes, it was Grodd (Monsieur Mallah isn't worth mentioning.)Which Gorilla? Because if it was Grodd, that's a talking PSYCHIC gorilla, which totally merits teaming.
And Flash has defeated him solo (quite a few times) so, if the point is that heroes ONLY team against people they can't beat alone, this has been proven false.
Comics have heroes team whenever they feel like it and solo whenever they feel like it. Just like this game.
-
Quote:So, you've never seen heroes team-up against lesser villains? Is that what you're saying? No, many team members in comics do their own thing, solo or with a regular partner, until there's a threat that can't be handled that way.
In the game, even the most trivial missions produce more (and sometimes stronger) enemies to match the number of heroes involved. In the comics, it would be pretty strange for Captain America to say "The jewelry store is being robbed. Avengers, assemble!"
Because Spidey does it all the time. In fact, his newest series is nothing but a Team-up book and they're not facing World Beaters each issue. Cap calls in Falcon and Ironman to fight Hydra goons. the Avengers have banded together to fight ninjas (and Hand ninjas, at that!) Then there's the Brave & the Bold. Or when Capt. Marvel guest stars in a Superman book. GL and Flash work together to defeat a talking gorilla (yeah, that sounds like a real threat.) And plenty more.
The game stacks baddies so the teaming doesn't feel like overkill (much like writers stacking the deck against the hero to give him/her a reason for the team-up, despite the hero having handled bigger threats by themselves before.)
Team-ups are a comic staple. To suggest that a team-up is somehow "less heroic" is nonsense.
-
Quote:Except for the JLA, JSA, Titans, Avengers, etc, right?I'd say that teaming is more selfish. Heroes earn thier own dang XP and fight thier own battles. They don't ask people to do it for them.
A young brave goes on his spirit quest alone. He doesn't grab 7 others to help him while he door-sits.

Speaking as someone who started F2P about 4-5 months ago, I'd have to say that the lack of access to most of the things you mentioned is what caused me to go VIP.
I wanted to play a MM so I purchased it and, while in costume creator, saw a number of items I couldn't get so was a bit dissapointed. But I went ahead and played, with my F2P restrictions. I had a blast! I realized I loved this game. The problem came when, over the next three weeks, I started noticing a few things I wasn't able to do that I really wanted to do (i.e posting here, joining/creating SG, AE, etc.) Now, i could have spent cash on individual items but, for me, I found that paying the monthly sub to be the smarter option.
All that is to say that witholding these perks does have the intended affect. Unless I'm the only one who fell for it, which would be kinda cool. I like being unique.

Yeah, no way can this go wrong...

Quote:Exactly what I was wondering. It's not a normal Fairy Tale book because it tells the EXACT story of what the Queen did.So where did the book come from? I know Snow White gave it to him but where did she get it from?
My guess is that Snow got it from Gold, who "gave" it to himself as Rumplestiltskin. Which fits with my above theory nicely.
-
@Antiwesley (GREAT name, btw) no worries. I have you on Global now so we won't miss again!
@Aku I love the character concept. Especially since my toon is also an Engineer class and is a bots MM/Devices. May be able to help with your memory issues.
*EDIT*
Also, does our ship/base have a name?
Here's my pic:
-
We need to have a set time at least once a week.
Trying to link up randomly doesn't seem to be working.
-
Who can change our Ranking?
It has me listed as Healer-Blue but I'm an Engineer-Green.
-
The intro is telling the truth. Only the Queen remembers.
But I believe that Mr. Gold knows. I'd bet Rumplestiltskin used some magic loophole (there's ALWAYS one of those) to get himself, as Gold, a message about their true nature. So, he doesn't remember, per se, but he's aware, maybe? Just my theory.
-
Young Justice, for sure!
All of the Timm shows are excellent (Superman:TAS, Batman:TAS, JL/JLU)
Also, the Wonder Woman animated movie was really good.
Oh, and check out the new Green Lantern series coming to Cartoon network next year. they already aired the premiere episode.
As for Smallville, I'd suggest you skip it as it's not about Clark being a hero as much as him becoming one (there's a BIG difference.)
-
Coolness. I just created an Engineer MM/Traps toon (Green, right?)
My Global name is 80sBaby and I'm on anytime after 6 pm est weekdays. Weekends are whenever.
-
I think I would like to join this squad. Sounds like a lot of fun!
-
Making the movie closer to Renegades is a good idea.
-
Bruce Willis?? That just made this movie watchable, for me.
I'm praying Ripcord gets offed, quickly and violently.
