The thing about ice patch is that it's nice to have SOMETHING as an ice/ice tanker when you are facing foes that do psi or fire damage.
Then it is pretty much just chilling embrace and ice patch keeping you in the game.
[/ QUOTE ]
This. As I IO'd out Aett, I found that I was using Ice Patch less and less. Still, against certain mobs, it was definitely nice to have. Frozen Aura allowing me to actually kill large groups also lessened the need for Ice Patch. On the way up though, I'd still suggest taking it to people, since it's a great survival tool that needs no additional slots at a time when you can probably use all the slots you're getting. -

Blasters get shields...and might I add the very over powered Force Mastery APP, which many have coined the "tanking blaster APP".
Controllers, get the very "OP" Hibernate from the Ice mastery,
[/ QUOTE ]
Okay, and like the above posters, I'd say that they only get those in their APPs, which is where Tankers get blasts, which is apparently the problem that you and Ultimo have, having to wait until that level.
Which is why I asked if they should have SECONDARIES like that. Should Blasters get more defenses in their secondaries? Controllers? Defenders?
Also, I don't know why you think that Hibernate is OP. Even in PvP, it freezes the enemy in place. You can just wait until they have to come out of it. If you were going to beat them before they went all Icey, then you can beat them after they need to stop.
In PvE, Hibernate is a great panic button, but not nearly overpowered.
[ QUOTE ]
Balance is usually achieved through strength of powers. But if you need further proof, see WoW, or EQ, or even the Diablo series. Balance in these games are made by adding new powers that seem overpowered but remain weak in certain areas, being CD(cooldown) or high end/mana usage. Overall the game still remains the same, if anything enemies are given more life.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ummm...the same is true here, you know. Unstoppable, Hibernate, Inferno, etc., all have either a cooldown period now or a crash which costs a lot. The only one that doesn't have a crash, cooldown, or large endurance cost is Granite (oddly enough, which is the character in your Avatar), and that suffers other penalties, meeting your criteria of remaining weak in other areas.
[ QUOTE ]
Don't assume I want a landslide victory over every mob I run into.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm not assuming what you want. I'm telling you what you could do. Just because you say that you don't want that doesn't mean that other people wouldn't take advantage of the system and do just that. Taunt + Large amount of ranged attacks = quickly dead spawn at no risk. You can do this now, it just takes longer because of the relatively short supply of ranged attacks that Tankers get.
[ QUOTE ]
Although if I did, I would create a fire/ blaster and inferno my way into easy exp. See where I'm going here?
[/ QUOTE ]
Not really. Since Inferno has a long recharge, and drains all of your endurance, I'd say that this would be one of the worst ways to gain XP. You'd be better off just using your regular attacks. Also, since Inferno causes you to go into melee to fire it off, you're putting yourself at more risk each time you use it. I'd say that's pretty balanced. Now, with a Tanker drawing the fire of the enemies, it gets safer to use, but that still won't negate the endurance crash or the recharge.
[ QUOTE ]
we all know what moves are overpowered, we see them everyday when we play.
[/ QUOTE ]
Really? none of the powers that you've mentioned seem overpowered to me. There have definitely been times in the past where powers have been overpowered, but none of them are the ones that you mentioned.
In fact, I'd have to say that there's only one power left that I think is overpowered, and that's only because you can double or triple stack it: Rage. But even then, we've been told that it might be looked at.
Things can appear overpowered here, but they do have drawbacks to their use.
[ QUOTE ]
Its easy to implement blasting for Tanks, the only "adjusting" needed would be the very blasting powers. The game doesn't need to be revamped to add already existing powers.
[/ QUOTE ]
No, it doesn't. But pretending like the balance issues would be easy to overcome is naive. The Devs would also need to create whole new sets with these blast powers in them. Even if they copied most of Energy Melee, and replaced a few powers with ranged attacks, you'd still have to spend time creating the new set and dealing with the balance issues that it would create. -

[ QUOTE ]
Except, what's the point in this feature if it's identical to creating a new character?
I suppose if you already had 396 characters, but I doubt that's common.
[/ QUOTE ]
It's mostly for thematic reasons, probably why it will never get done, don't you have any characters that you really loved and would like to develop another side to?
Or a character who will switch sides and have power changes to represent their change in mentality?
[/ QUOTE ]
I have, and have done this, actually. However, it usually involves a name change, even slightly. For a while, my namesake character had a duplicate, but a Brute instead of a Tanker. Dark Thorn vs. Aett Thorn. Dark Thorn didn't last long, as I wasn't a fan of the new powerset concept, but it was there. He looked the same in appearance, but the name was changed to fit the different personality.
You can create characters that are really similar, but that have different powersets. Just takes a little bit more imagination to do. -
[ QUOTE ]
Common suggestion, and just as commonly broken down to explain why it's a bad idea.
...I'm sure Aett or Bill'll be along at some point.
[/ QUOTE ]
Nah, I don't feel like stopping by.
Damnit!
Oh well, since I'm here. Yeah, what the above people have said. If you're just starting over at level 1, with new powersets, then there's basically no need to create this mechanic, since it's the same as starting a new character.
Like the name and the look, but want to try new powersets? Buy a rename token, or create a character with the same name and look on a new server.
The only difference between your idea and a new character is probably badges, with many of them that are not meant to be on new characters.
I really just don't get the point, or see how it's much different than rolling a new character, sorry. -
Not really. we could turn it into a BBQ thread, since there really hasn't been a Taunt debate in a while.
Or we could threadjack it into a Taunt debate, and then threadjack THAT into a BBQ thread. -

I thought it was about how if you said Troy Hickmans' name three times it would summon him.

Who says that's a bad thing?
[/ QUOTE ]
PETA, OSHA, the U.N. Security Council, and the Brazilian Interior Department, that's who.

What about the IRS?

The IRS, as much as we might complain about this policy, does not care about Hickman's pants. -

Do you know of "any" MMO's that don't have some form of farming?

Hello Kitty Island Adventure has none.
But that aside, I also know of no MMO that thinks that Farming is crucial to its survival. -

Well, I don't think that mission uses the same map for everyone, so not sure how much we can tell you there.
Do you have your speakers turned on when running this mission? The bombs make a sound like any glowie does, so you should be able to hear it when you get close.
The glowies have set possible locations in any mission, but can be randomized between them if there are less glowies than the potential number of spots. -

[ QUOTE ]
On the face of things, this is patently absurd. MA is used for nothing BUT farming. No one cares about your fan fic.
[/ QUOTE ]
Really? Nobody in the entire game uses the MA to just run different arcs and see the different stories? Because I certainly do.
[ QUOTE ]
And if the dev's were interested in getting rid of farming, wouldn't it make sense to start with the portion they have complete control over?
[/ QUOTE ]
Again, they're not. Please show me where they ever said that they were interested in getting rid of farming. -

I don't really get how "You are not to use the MA for farming" is anything but clear.
[/ QUOTE ]
For one, the definition of farming is anything but clear.
[/ QUOTE ]
While the line may be fuzzy, "meows" very clearly took a flying leap over it.
[/ QUOTE ]
Agreed. And the dev's took the appropriate action by removing it, even if they were "forced" to let it go until exactly the moment that the reactivation week ended. That said, they never should have let that exploit go live to begin with, and they need to take responsibility instead of putting it on the players.
[/ QUOTE ]
This I would agree with.
However, I think that the Devs are well within their rights to try to make the players uphold some sort of standards. "They didn't force me not to do it" really isn't an excuse you can use in the rest of the world. I don't see many full-grown adults try to say that they robbed a bank because the cops were there specifically to stop them, therefore it must be okay.
The Devs have asked the players not to do something, and warned that there would be consequences if they did it anyways. Some players did it anyways, and they had consequences laid down on them.
100,000+ players will always be more crafty than 50 Devs. It's always going to happen that way. There's really no way around it. At some point, even if the Devs do crack down a lot more on issues with the MA, some player will find a way around it. At some point, there's not much more you can do than tell the players the rules they are expected to play by, and say that you'll punish people who don't play that way. -
[ QUOTE ]
and defeating comm officers was completely withing the rules also.
[/ QUOTE ]
Was it? When the Devs made it pretty clear before the MA was even released that exploits in the MA would be addressed? It was pretty dumb of them to allow it to go through from the Beta, but I do believe that they made it pretty clear that farming like that was NOt within the rules of the MA.
[ QUOTE ]
you dont actually know that something is an exploit until they declare it so. You might have a pretty good idea that it might be, but you dont know.
[/ QUOTE ]
There is a pretty good deal of gray area when it comes to exploits, I'll give you that. The Comm Officer missions were so far into the black area it wasn't funny, and it was pretty obvious that they were in the black area, too. Being able to level from 1 to 50 in the span of a couple of hours with a single high-level character in a group should have tripped pretty much everyone's alarm.
[ QUOTE ]
Perma dom fits into the description for exploit, yet the devs say its ok.
[/ QUOTE ]
How does perma-dom fit the definition of an exploit? In order to get there, you need to spend millions and millions of influence, and take time to get your characters to a level where it's possible. Even then, you are only seeing the AT at the peak of it's performance. Perma Dom is not an exploit, and never has been. Seeking to attain Perma-Dom is nothing more than a Tanker trying to achieve the Defense Soft Cap.
The ONLY thing that it does is create a have-vs-have not situation within the Dominator community. But even that isn't too bad. -
[ QUOTE ]
400+ runs of the STF, done ENTIRELY FOR REWARD, the cutscenes are boring and I go make a sandwich or drink while they are running, 180 seconds for the god damn lose = Farming, you cannot define it any other way = Not okay according to the rules. No punishment. Check.
Paper running specifically Freaks or other mob = Farming = Not okay, according to the rules. No punishment. Check.
[/ QUOTE ]
Please show me where in the rules doing either of these things is not okay. I'll wait.
"You are not to use the MA for farming" does not mean that all farming is bad.
[ QUOTE ]
The Comm Officers? Yeah, those were a bug. They were dealt with. Mole Machines? They were also a bug. They were dealt with.
Kill the "farming" rhetoric and everyone would be happy. MMOs subsist on "farming". They couldn't be successful without it and they wouldn't be able to exist without it.
[/ QUOTE ]
Do you have any proof of this, or is it just your own assumption? I don't believe it for a second that an MMO couldn't exist without farming.
[ QUOTE ]
Or just auto-lock any thread that mentions farming, meowing (ha ha, catgirl RPers), or any related subjects and things might work out for the better.

For one, the definition of farming is anything but clear.
[/ QUOTE ]
Only meaning is, doing something over and over and over when it comes to game terms. Thats it. That s farming in an MMO. No other meaning no matter what someone wants to believe.
[/ QUOTE ]
Thats an incredibly stupid definition. How many times is too many to repeat something? If I made an all Sapper mish and repeated that (which I intend to do just as soon as I get done repeatedly slamming my testes in a car door) would I be farming?
By a strict reading of that rule, this game is nothing but farming, as I'm constantly repeating content. I think you've out-deved the devs here, as they certainly don't agree with this definition, or demon farms, warrior farms, etc would have been removed long ago.
[/ QUOTE ]
Why? They've said, even quite recently, that they'll never be able to get rid of all farms. However, they've also specifically said that the MA is not to be used for farming. As such, they can take whatever definition they have for farming, and apply rules to the MA system that they don't need to do to the rest of the game. What is allowed in the MA does not need to follow what is allowed outside the MA. -

That was when people were using the defense exploit before GDN. And others were using the 5 damage SO's exploit before ED.

What defense exploit? And what 5 damage SO exploit? Both of those were completely within the rules back then. -

Defense right is called to make sure if they don't hit you they don't hit you right if you have enough they might score maybe some hits but with rooted and all my regeneration will regenerate that in a fast amount of time. My build i have right now on my toon i have franken slotted and have no prob with mud pots even i don't even lost a ounce of end.. and i barley use dark consumption sometimes i use that as an another attack.. but no problems... Rock armor i don't see any use for it period you can't put it on with Granite and i only put it there for anything to put my 7.5 run my LOTG +recharge and another LOTG for another slot for +10% regen. I usually have 3 Slots into swift but im wondering it might make a difference im thinking of just removing the slot.. The 4 slotted attacks and stuff that was just for damage buff... i got that into there because we all know that granite lacks speed damage and recharge if i can keep there aggro with my mud pots then soul drain and attack i think i have enough to get my damage back up to normal without the granite armor.
[/ QUOTE ]
Translation service applied, since this made very little sense to me:
Defense means that if they don't hit you, they don't hit you, right? If you have enough Defense they might score some hits, but with Rooted and all my regeneration I will regenerate that damage quickly.
The build I have right now on my toon is franken slotted and I have no prob with Mud Pots. I don't even lose a ounce of end. I barely use Dark Consumption. I sometimes use Dark Consumption just as another attack, so no problems there.
I don't see any use for Rock Armor, as you can't use it with Granite. I only have it as a place to put a +7.5% Recharge IO and another LOTG for +10% regen.
I usually put 3 Slots into swift, but I'm wondering if it might make a difference. I'm thinking of just removing the slot.
The 4 slotted attacks and stuff was just for the damage buff. I got that in there because we all know that Granite debuffs speed, damage, and recharge. If I can keep the enemy aggro'd with my Mud Pots, then Soul Drain and attack, I think I have enough to get my damage back up to normal even with the Granite Armor penalties. -

Yes, it is. Though, I would take it in the low levels, then respec it out once you get some of the higher-level attacks.
