  2. It occurs that a lot of people really aren't understanding how the event works. It's pretty complex, honestly, but if you remember a few key facts, you'll be okay.

First, the best source for information on it so far (isn't it always!?) is the wiki: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Deadly_Apocalypse .

    - When you first hear about the event, you've got 5 minutes to assemble your teams, find the banners, and whatnot. The 'defender' monsters spawn at 16:00 minutes on the timer even and there's no way to force them to spawn earlier or later.

    - You must have players fighting at all four banner locations before you get the 'blue bar' of Banner Vulnerability. I've found that if you have about two groups in zone, it works best for each group to split up its teammembers and send 2 to each banner. Your mileage may vary, but you won't make any progress at all, unless you have people fighting at all 4 banners

    - Once the banners are vulnerable, then it's a really good idea to regroup all players on one banner and beat it down rather than stay spread out. This requires a little buy-in from the other-teams, but once people've seen it work a few times, they pick it up very quickly. I've found that if you tell people 'Red', 'Blue', 'Green', 'Purple' in the order that they appear across the nav bar that it's less confusing.

    - The 'distance to aspect' counter is a radius. It tells you how far you are from the GM that appears after the last banner goes down. It's not a 'zone location' like you'd receive from '/loc'.

    - You get another 20 minutes to defeat the GM after the last banner goes down, so it doesn't hurt to wait a bit to let everyone get in place to fight him.

Anyone else notice any misconceptions about the event?
  3. There's a really good japanese comic by author Shiina Takashi named 'Zettai Karen Children'. (Literally, 'Absolutely Lovely'. Pronounce it through clenched teeth for the right effect. Oh yes. The children. They're... absolutely... lovely... ARRGGHH!)

The main characters are a former child prodigy who's grown up to be an ESP researcher and the three 'tween' esper girls he supervises. The girls are so powerful that they've been recruited into the government's service simply because they're NOTHING ELSE they can do with their nigh god-like powers.

While the story is an action-comedy, the author plays heavily on the serious problems faced by super-powered children.

Kaoru, the telekinetic, has a strained relationship with her mother and sister, both of whom are performers. "We cannot discipline that child," her mother states. And how could you when the child is capable of destroying military hardware in minor irritation. Setting limits and punishing her is something that only a major government (and someone with fantastic intestinal fortitude) can manage.

Kaoru accidentally hospitalized her mother when she was five years old and was immediately remanded into government custody. When she does go home to visit her family, she often reacts badly to their fans. The government has had to relocate her actress mother and model sister repeatedly due to destruction of their house and surrounds.

Accordingly, none of the three children can attend school without major government oversight for fear of the damage they could unleash on their teachers or classmates.

Shiho, the psychic telemeter, has to deal with a world in which most people, including her parents, are afraid to touch her. She has a good relationship with her parents, but her father is a police chief. He exposes his daughter to everything that goes on in his life every time he touches her, so he does so as seldom as he can.

"I know that the world is a dark and twisted place. How could I not?"

Since she's the most powerful psychic in the country, she's the investigator of last resort for unsolved crimes. Her supervisor interrupts a meeting in which she's being asked to identify murder weapons, outraged that she would exposed to such horror.

Aoi, the teleporter, has the easiest time of the three girls fitting in, but is still considered to be highly dangerous due to her abilities to, say, drop large buildings on people. She, as well as the other children are used to explore the theme of outside abuse of her powers-- governments and high-ranking individuals using the children as political pawns and superweapons.

At one point, Aoi strikes the Prime Minister of Japan for placing her in an incredibly dangerous situation for trivial reasons.

This is actually the series' overriding theme. The supervisor, Kouichi Minamoto, spends as much time defending the children and other espers from his supposed 'allies' as he does from enemies.
  4. I experienced this same bug both while teaming in a duo doing missions and while in a team of 8 on a 3rd hero respec.
  5. In the event I participated in Talos, I never saw any kind of barrier despite hopping as fast as I could to the different flag things. I did see some kind of glowing rune on the ground, but people were attacking the flag anyway.

With all the people testing, the flag went down nigh-instantly. I'd say sub-10 second.
  6. Add me to the list that wants to make sure that the +level difficulty option remains for TFs. I did an ITF last night on the equivalent of 'Unyielding' simply because my team was capable of it. I'd have hated for that team to run at +0/+0.

Also, taking away the difficulty options for Oro will, frankly, kinda suck.

Having earned Field Crafter on a couple different hero characters and MoSTF on a handful of characters before i16 and having Venomous and Illusionist awarded to a few different characters on i16's release, I feel that the accomplishment of the two different kind of badges is rather different.

Field Crafter definitely fits my definition of 'Epic'. The way I prefer to work on it is to craft dropped common IO recipes with dropped salvage. By the time you reach 45 or so, there are definitely some gaps which have to be filled via buying and selling on the market. There's simply not as much call for Hold IOs as their are for Damage IOs. However, if you've done the crafting all along, you probably have far more than enough.

I always tell people that Field Crafter is relatively inexpensive, but that's only true if you gradually peck at it the way I do.

MoSTF is slightly less epic, but that may be due to my past MMO experience. Once upon a time, I participated in an Everquest raiding guild. Depending on the encounter, it required a level of concentration and coordination that isn't necessary in CoH outside of, maybe, fighting the Hamidon. I earned my Duckstick the old-fashioned way, by raiding for every piece of it. It took literally months, and required me to do lots of legwork and organization. In the process, I helped lots of other players earn their class-specific epic quest weapons as well. Not only did they become parts of my 'epic experience', but I was a part of theirs as well.

MoSTF requires you to organize 8 people and learn 5 missions really well. It's fun, exciting, and there are lots of neat tactics you can use in various places. If you take the time to learn it and build a small group of friends who are thoughtful, quality players, it can be done with relative ease.

I would certainly love more encounters like MoSTF, MoDr. K, and MoITF but I'd also like more stuff to do like Field Crafter, and pre-nerf Archmage and Vanguard accolades.

I loved that Illusionist was hard, but was part of the highly-useful Archmage accolade.

I liked Venomous anyway, just because it was hard. Hunt for a few spiders while LGTFs were organizing, take care to to tag them during STFs, and gradually build your count for the badge. You *could* do something to farm them, like run one mission of the STF over and over again, but the fun way to do it is to gradually work for it.

That's ultimately what I want -- more piddly rewards to gradually work for. Heck, it's even better if they're not tied to content or special abilities!

My take on it is that there's also a pretty fine line between farming and playing. If you want to go and slaughter monkeys for hours on Monkey Island for kicks, that's 'playing'. If you were doing it to earn the badges associated with it, that's 'farming'. The difference between the two is the amount of enjoyment you get out of it.

I try to always place myself far, far away from the line, strictly for the sake of my own enjoyment and stress levels. If I catch the game making me 'work' at all, I log out.

I completely understand the desire to 'work' for rewards, but avoid it in the context of the game. When I mention 'farmers' and 'exploiters' in the same breath it's only because the situation that creates one has the potential to create the other.

You seem a bit sensitive about that. This post comes off as very combative.

In my experience, farming and exploiting tend to go hand-in-hand. In real life, among coworkers, friends, and other acquaintances, I've never met any MMO player who was willing to farm who was also not willing to use an exploit. The number of farmers I've met in CoH who were not also exploiters is better, but still more than 30% or so. (Yes, I do petition when I see exploits happen.)

That's not a blanket statement or a generalization. That's a summary of my experience. Place me along the bell curve where you will.

Farming and exploiting come from the same player desire -- the want to obtain rewards without earning them through the regular course of play. The difference between the two is that one doesn't cross the line of breaking the in-game rules. Accordingly, where there is an opportunity for farming, exploiters will also be present. Even if you don't like the association, it's still there.

Weeds grow in the same field as corn, after all.
  10. I knew that I was going to get a slew of badges when i16 went live. When the day came, I got badges like 'Venomous', 'Illusionist', 'Master at Arms', 'Demolitionist', and others that I'd been slowly working on for a while without ever really 'farming' for them.

It was really anti-climatic. I felt a little cheated.

I also know, that should I choose to begin working on them, certain badges that are somewhat AT-specific like the various Heal badges have dramatically lowered requirements.

That's great. I'm really glad that Paragon Devs have chosen to address the farming issues for badges by making it so that you can earn more of them through regular play. Not only are people less likely to use exploits to earn badges, but they can earn the badges they want in a reasonable amount of time rather than farming for months and months.

I also understand that adding new badges in with more difficult requirements would be undoing a lot of that work, even if the badges did not unlock special abilities, costume pieces, or other content. People would begin farming and trying to use exploits to obtain them again, simply in a race to be first, best, or for the sake of obsession.

I still wish that there were badges like that to work for-- badges that had to be pecked at over weeks or even months in the course of regular play.

To the Paragon devs, I thank you for your hard work and the attention to detail required by such a delicate balancing act. If you can see ways to work this kind of badge challenge back into the game, please do so!
  11. In 1969, George Lucas cofounded American Zoetrope studio with Francis Ford Coppola as part of an effort to help free filmmaking from what he perceived as the 'oppresive' Hollywood Studio system. Many popular, ground-breaking, and critically acclaimed films came out of Zoetrope over the years, including classics like 'American Graffiti', 'Apocalypse Now', and 'Lost in Translation'.

In 1973, Lucas began work on the original 'Star Wars' film. It was far too grandiose a project for American Zoetrope, but Lucas' success with 'American Graffiti' and his willingness to settle for merely the licensing rights to the film convinced Fox Studio's executives to fund his work.

Lucas not only made a sizeable fortune off Star Wars merchandise, but the movie was, at the time, the most financially successful film ever. The income repaired Fox Studios' damaged finances and positioned Lucas to create another studio, Lucasfilm, solely to produce his own projects, including the many Star Wars sequels and prequels.

'Star Wars' was was inspired by the works of director Akira Kurosawa, theatrical 'cliffhanger' serials, and science fiction comics including Flash Gordon. Lucas' vision for the film was simply impossible to create at the time, so he and his collegues at Fox, and then later at Luscasfilm furthered existing special effects techniques or invented entirely new special effects processes in order to create the movie. Still, what moviegoers saw on the screen represented only part of Lucas' total vision, due to the limited time and budget allotted to the film.

Regardless, Industrial Light and Magic, the visual effects division of Lucasfilm is among if not the most respected effects house in the business.

In 1994, Lucas begin initial work on the Star Wars prequels which would eventually draw wide criticism on many fronts, but most notably for the overuse of special visual effects. The paramount difference between 1973 and 1994 in filmmaking was the availability of powerful computer graphics technology that could render entire scenes that previously had to be matte painted or modeled in miniature. For the first time, Lucas was able to cram most of his vision into the film.

What his viewers discovered was that adversity in the creation of the first Star Wars movie bred beauty. The effects used were profoundly moving in part because they were expensive in terms of time and money, required careful attention to detail on the part of the creators, and needed very careful editing in order to fit in the context of the film. They were hard, so they were used sparingly, and only when necessary to further the plot of the film.

By comparison, Lucas' wealth and the availability of all the computer power he could buy meant that no such limitations were placed on the prequels. Each and every idea Lucas had could not only be filmed, but computer-rendered. His actors spent less time talking to each other and more time talking to a green screen or stand-ins. The audience is treated to massive sequences of computer animation containing no cuts with real actors.

The 'beauty bred from adversity' present in varying degrees in the first three films is simply absent in the last three.

'Now', you ask, 'What does this all have to do with me? More importantly, why are you posting this in the General Discussion area rather than the Culture area?'

City of Heroes players have been granted many powerful creative tools during the game's history. None, bar the original Character Creator, have been as powerful or had such a profound visual effect on the game as Power Customization. Players can pour more of their ideas for character creation onto the screen than ever before.

Just as with George Lucas' prequels, however, we have lost a bit of that 'beauty bred from adversity'. No longer need costumes be carefully matched to power colors. Likewise, visual abominations now stalk the streets of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles.

'Why is your fire Green and Purple rather than the yellow, orange, and red shades we normally associate with flames?'

"Why are your shadows red? Aren't shadows usually dark?'

If the answer to these questions is merely 'Because it looks cool', you might think back to the kinds of effects used in the original Star Wars movies. They were there because they advanced the plot, characterization, or setting, and used pretty sparsely.

If, however, your answer is something like, "My character is a nature sprite, and her fire encompasses all seasons, including spring and fall" or "My shadows are red because my character is a vampire and they're infused with the blood of his victims", you're using the new power customization features to further your character's personality.

Remember, kids, just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD. The next time you go into the character creator, remember the lessons that George Lucas has, purposefully or not, been so kind as to teach us.

  14. I've described this to my friends as that it looks like for all the world, I'm getting bad reception and 'snow' in my 3d windows

Pictured are 2 scrappers and a stone tank in the midst of fighting some Crey during a Manticore taskforce over the weekend. Here's a link to a large, full-screen grab so you can see more of what's going on.

The video corruption scrolls randomly across the screen, again like the aforementioned analogue reception 'snow'. It occurs fairly rarely, and only when I'm teamed. While I'm playing CoH, it only affects the 3D game window. After I quit, it starts to affect all 2D windows. A full reboot is the only way to clear it up.

Its persisted through system resintalls and driver updates.

I run CoH on an NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT. I also have an 5200FX installed to run a second monitor, but never use it for 3D apps.

Has anyone ever seen this video corruption bug before?

  15. I'm not a stone tank type, but I know that the idea of losing my costume entirely to Granite chases me away. I'd NEVER consider playing a stone tank solely due to the costume model.

This is one of the things that chases me away from Khelds as well.

Bio: After World War II, Lauren Podolski (nee Kostenko) immigrated to the United States from the Ukraine with her family as an infant. She's been working as the manager for Pandora's Box for eight years after her son Barry, the sorcerer known as the Cloaked Summoner, recommended the place. Despite have zero magical talent of her own, Lauren does have a keen eye for spotting fakes and scams, so is an ideal manager for a magic shop.

  18. Something that used to happen in the old Paragon Times (?) is that a minor, unnamed character in game would get a bit of backstory. That was awesome and I'm sad that it doesn't happen any more.

So let's rekindle the tradition. Pick an unnamed NPC. Name them. Give them a bio. Flesh 'em out and make 'em more important:

Atlas Park Hero Corps Field Analyst

    Name: Kevin Dewitt
    Age: 24
    Origin: Science
Powers: Long Distance Telepathy, Telempathy (Mind Control/Psi Blast Defender)

Bio: Kevin gained his mental powers while participating in a drug trial for Crey Pharmaceuticals held on campus at the University of Rhode Island. Crey halted the drug trial immediately when Kevin began displaying the ability to read minds and project his own thoughts. After numerous tests at Crey Labs in Paragon City, they recommended him for employment with Hero Corps, an organization Crey helps fund.

Sadly, no. Just work. That last week is when the all-nighters have been scheduled. Accordingly, the new issue is most likely to be released when I'm simply too exhausted to enjoy playing it.
  20. Looking over my schedule for this month, I realized that I had a pretty good idea of when i16 would be released:

So, yeah, I'm pretty much screwed for i16 release fun.

    'Who is Jack?'

This is a question I see coming up in my groups pretty frequently, either during downtime or even during combat if the team has managed to reach that pace. A certain beta being produced by a company that Mr. Emmert has a significant stake in is prompting some what more than the usual number discussions to come up.

However, there are indeed new a fairly large number of new players in the game and so explaining Who Jack was is growing difficult. What he did for the game, criticisms against him, and what he's doing now is enough information to fill a small book.

Then if you get to the end of that conversation, there's immediately another on the merits and problems of the Global Defense Nerf as well as Enhancement Diversification, again unknown concepts to a great number of players.

My usual response to these questions is something along the lines of:

'Jack is Jack Emmert, who posted as Statesman on the official boards. He left the CoH design team when it was purchased by NCSoft and remained at Cryptic, where he's engaged in the creation of a very similar game based on the 'Champions' RPG.

'I'm afraid he doesn't have a very good reputation among CoH players because SINCE leaving the NCSoft dev team, he's done things like recruit for his new game on the CoH message board. Even before that, he tended to earn enemies by making unkeepable promises-- such as promising 'no more power nerfs' and then implementing the 'enhancement diversification.

'For many players he's exhausted all his respect and credulity. I personally advise you to take anything you hear from him on the Champions Online forums with a big grain of salt. He's very good at making grandiose promises and then never living up to them.'

How do you reply to questions about Jack?

See? I have learned something new!

Another question we might be asking is, 'What is the price difference between a NA account and a EU account?'

I wonder what other diferences exist aside form localization string tables?

Is there any dev-sanctioned hack to use the NA client on Euro servers?

Surely not.... Surely the in-game cars drive American style (on the right) rather than Euro style (on the left.) Surely they wouldn't let such a piddling inconsistency keep it from happening.

Now a Bigger Inconsistency, I could see, but this one's a bit far out for me to buy
  24. The forum migration has been a neat thing to witness both from a technical perspective as well as a cultural perspective.

For example, Avatea's name is on posts made in English, Deutsch, and Francais. Does she really speak all three languages? Are there some other multi-lingual NCSoft staffers helping her out? Is there some translation software carrying the burden? (I can just make out what's going on in German and French, but certainly not enough to tell if the posts make sense.)

I've also learned quite a bit reading posts made by English-speaking Euros.

So the question now is will the same thing that has happened to the forums ever happen to the game servers? Will EU Heroes and Villains ever be able to play (once again) on NA servers? Will NA Heroes ever be able to play on EU servers?

I know that there are quite a few players on Victory who have NA CoH accounts despite living in Europe (and some from Asia and Australia as well). My experiences with them are usually good, and I'd like to think that they have a good time as well.

So, for you EU players, would you brave the cross-Atlantic lag to play on a NA server? Would you want NA players on EU servers?
