Quote:Relaaaaax, sometimes things take a while, and traps isn't the most popular set.24 views and nobody's said anything? =/ No advice on how to improve or thoughts on how it'll do?
I took a quick glance and it looks good, you've covered most of the bases and my comments are mostly personal preference.
Looks like your pets are already softcapped, good stuff.
I personally like a defence shield instead of a resist shield, because it softcaps your mastermind.
The soulbound allegience buildup proc works nicely in assault bot, and is relatively cheap these days.
I have 6 slots in caltrops and use them a lot, it keeps everyone in the burn patches, does decent damage and accepts a lot of procs. The ragnarok KD proc works nicely if you've got the cash.
I might steal some slots from triage beacon, or maybe you're using it as a set mule.
Anyway, looks burntastic, hope you have fun with it. -
I've found RWZ ship raids give respectable prestige for time invested.
-
That's an interesting idea. Any suggestions for early blooming redside builds?
I'm thinking a lvl9 claws/something brute would be good.
A lvl 14 fire/dark corr has already got most of their attack chain. Tarpatch+fireball+rain of fire is mayhemtastic! -
An honest question - if people's auras etc lag your machine at the market, how does your computer survive actual game content? Do you avoid teams with certain powersets or something?

Quote:I had a small taste of that getting the "Army of me" badge.I don't know if the potential of stacked all spider teams have been properly investigated.
8 mid-level VEAT clones OBLITERATED our 8-man team at +2x0. The kind of team wipes you don't see outside the LRSF. We reset to -1x0. First try we killed 3 or so of them before we wiped, and finally beat them after hosping and regrouping.
Of course the mish clones aren't IO'd and probably don't have optimum power choices
Another time I joined an "Army of me" team in progress, they'd already wiped with a smallish party and had 8 MM clones waiting in the room, all pets summoned and buffed, don't remember what flavour. We got crushed trying to assault that room, so I convinced them to reset the mish and try again, the idea was to smash as many MMs as possible before they could summon pets. That battle was merely difficult. -
Quote:Compare the size of the other aoe attacks. Footstomp is huuuuuge, and pbaoe, i.e. no fiddling with cones.looking at mids the aoe dmg on foot stomp just seems mediocre even with some fury and rage active.
I don't know if it's the best, but it certainly doesn't feel underpowered. -
Quote:I picked a defender for my Dual Pistols because let's face it, DP's good looks can't disguise the mediocre damage. A /DP defender gives you a great looking, fun toon with the full awesomeness of the primary, and some of those primaries are really, really awesome.Been debating between DP/Cold or Cold/DP myself and I'm actually leaning toward the defender instead of the corrupter. Better shields, better arctic fog, better slows, and getting sleet at lvl 26 instead of 35. Defender sounds good to me...Just wish they'd fix sleet and give defenders the better -res value they should get in it, then it'd really be no contest to me.

Quote:Broot can smash with voice? And really, why skip Taunt? The more trying to kill you, the stronger you are, and the team loves you. What is there to lose?
Well these aren't good reasons, but here's why my main didn't bother with taunt...
It interrupts my attack chain, taking away valuable smashing time.
I have other powers I desperately want to take, especially at low levels.
I solo a lot.
Redside teams, especially PUGs, are usually every man for themselves, I certainly can't count on every corr on the team to go out of their way to heal me.
Running high level content I realise it's a hole in my build. It's no fun watching Statesman squish the squishies, no matter how hard I'm beating on him. One of these day's I'll plan a respec with taunt, but I probably still wouldn't think to spam it while PUGing normal content. -
I confess I only glanced at the build, but a quick comment about protector bots - slotting more heal doesn't help as much as you'd expect, they just wait longer to use that bigger heal. 1 endurance reduction is very nice in protbot, they sometime run out in long fights and you sure notice when the free heals stop.

Once you have seeker drones you no longer need "pull" tactics.
Summon drones on the edge of the group.
While the group is wasting their alpha on the drones, run into middle of group.
Lay down un-interuptable poison gas trap for AoE hold goodness.
Lay down un-interuptable acid mortar while the group is barfing.
Go to town with whatever attacks are appropriate, or toebomb trip mines.
Try it, it looks suicidal but is perfectly safe and you'll clear mobs much quicker. It also makes you a much more effective team player. -
Quote:SS is a late bloomer. Footstomp greatly adds to your killing power, and also to your survivability - AoE knockdown is fantastic damage mitigation, and all those guys flat on their butts still contribute to WP's RttC regen buff.Granted my Brute is only level 29, but I am finding that she isn't as sturdy as I assumed she would be. I know when my Spines/Willpower Scrapper was level 29 a long time ago it was already into its own, but I am not having that same feeling with this Brute. It could be my complete lack of AoE which I will have at level 32, but it seems like she just drops way too quickly unless I used insps or have a healer of some kind around.
Is this typical of Brutes or just SS/Willpower for Brutes?
A willpower tank is no doubt tougher, but how tough do you need to be? I've ended up soloing Statesman for a couple minutes at a time while teammates dashed back from the hospital, and my SS/WP is IO'd for recharge, not defence. -
Quote:So hold them first.I find the tankermind approach is very difficult with traps. Setting up mortar and triage is pretty damn hard when you are being pounded, held, drained etc.
Poison Gas Trap is an un-interruptable AoE hold. Run into the middle of the crowd and toebomb pgt.
If you're getting beat up too badly while laying pgt, start out by casting seeker drones into the middle of the crowd. While the mobs waste attacks on the drones, run into the middle of the group and toebomb pgt.
Now you can leisurely follow up with acid mortar and caltrops, micromanage your dumb minions, etc. -
Not quite what you asked, but a /traps Masterminds is a lot of fun. In particular bots/traps has ridiculous synergy.
A bots/traps MM is trivially softcapped because of the pet's shields. It is also fairly easy to softcap the pets. Softcapped MM + softcapped pets + bodyguard mode is extremely durable.
/traps has several ways to keep things inside the assault bot burn patches, so it's an AoE fiend. -
Quote:Ah, but he must care a little about inf, or he wouldn't be doing inf/minute calculationsCompare it to the amount of time he spends sifting through the random recipes separating the wheat from the chaff.
Plus, there are intangibles. For some people, the marketing of each random recipe is fun. For other people, they want to get back to stomping.
Silver rolls might be a decent compromise between tedium and inf, they'll always be a better moneymaker then rare salvage. -
Quote:Don't get me wrong, I love /dark too, but if you've got time to hit every single group with Fearsome Stare and tag someone with Darkest Night you've got time to toss down some caltrops and either Poison Gas Trap or Acid Mortar.OP, perhaps. Deserving of the level of nerf it got, not even a little bit. Traps is a decent solo set but if you're on a team that's moving even a little bit quickly the only real mileage you'll get out of the set is FFG (yay, by the time I've got my Acid Mortar set up the team's on the next spawn!).
The only (commonly taken) Dark Miasma power that might not see use as much on a steamrolling team is Tar Patch, but with some recharge slotting and set bonuses you'll have it up every few spawns anyways. In terms of mobility, Dark brings -tohit and -dam, -regen (lots of it, actually), a hold, a really really good cone terrorize/-tohit, one of the best AoE heals in the game, and a pet that is basically a miniature version of you.
You are right on the brute's heels into the middle of the crowd, right? -
Nice guide for an under-appreciated set.
A couple of comments from a bots/traps guy. My playstyle revolves around keeping stuff in the AssBot burn patches, but I imagine scourging rain of fire/ice storm would be play similar.
I 6-slotted caltrops and frankensklotted for slow/rech/dmg. I spam them like v1agra emails.
The ragnorok knockdown proc in caltrops is fantastic, aoe mitigation and indirect damage, i.e. KD'd mobs are in the kill zone longer.
You've got a place to slot some of the cheaper purples:
Web 'nade 5-slotted with Grav Anchor will keep bosses and LTs nicely inside the kill zone.
Seeker drones will take 5 Absolute Amazements.
(I suppose bots leaves me more free slots then most builds.)
Also, I agree that you'll rarely have room for TP foe, but it does a great job of pulling Malta Sappers and Cim Healbots out of the crowd, that's the only way my bubbler could handle those mobs -
I've taken another route to survivability- softcap myself and pets, run on bodyguard mode.
I'm softcapped with ffg + black scorpion patron shield + protector bot shield.
Don't forget to toss 2 +DEF IOs in the protector bot.
My pets are softcapped with ffg + prot bot shields + maneuvers + the pet +DEF proc.
This setup is very survivable but I haven't tried tough/weave so I can't directly compare. -
Quote:I could say the same thing about dark miasma - solo I use most or all of the control/debuff powers, on a steamrolling team it's unnecessary. No, it won't. I've played traps. I've played pretty much *every* support set. Traps simply takes to long to set up, and fully utilize it's debuffs. A decent team is going to be moving through the enemies at a decent pace, and the traps player will simply not have enough time to leverage their abilities.
Ironically enough, the time when Traps shine is when they are on crappy teams, since they have all the time in the world to use their abilities.
Traps is not a *terrible* set, but nearly all other sets bring more to the party, and are more team friendly then Traps.
But when someone accidentally pulls a second group, or there's a big ambush, or something non-trivial like an AV shows up... those powers I haven't bothered with for a while are available and recharged. Bingo, what might have been "interesting" quickly becomes as routine as the trash mobs, and the team continues to steamroll. -
I failed my resist troll check, and so I must defend /traps.
/traps strengths:
-seeker drones eat the alpha
- poison gas trap is an AV murder machine, and very helpful on normal crowds.
- acid mortar is like having your own longbow nullifier pet
- force field generator +DEF to you and the team, with much less effort then re-applying stuff.
- caltrops/web 'nade are fantastic paired with a DoT AoE like rain of fire or in my case bots' burn patches.
- triage beacon is sorta decent.
A set traps and pull strategy is deservedly un-appreciated. But a toebombing /traps is a force with normal content, and the -regen completely changes the character of AV fights. -
disclaimer - I play mostly redside, but those barriers are falling soon. I'm looking at hero ATs who will soon be able to benefit from my VG, stash of IOs/inf etc.
I've tried and deleted a couple of Dual Pistols corrupters. I find it pretty, but a decidedly average performer.
I had a brain wave the other day - a strong defender primary + DP might make a fun, good-looking toon. Is there any synergy between DP and Rad or Storm?
I've got redside Dark, Traps and Kin toons. I love 'em, but I'm looking for a new set to love. I also have a FF toon, who taught me that I don't enjoy re-applying shields to everyone, so I wouldn't be an effective cold or sonic. -
Quote:LOL you've just described my /traps Mastermind, except for the auto thing. You're a Defender for chrissake. It's the Healer AT.
Not only must you take Triage Beacon, you must put it on auto.
You must also take the whole Medicine pool. And put all those on auto.
And all three Leadership toggles. And put all those on auto.
And Recall Friend, slotted for range, so you can teleport fallen friends three miles away from combat before rezzing them.
Admittedly they benefit my pets as much as other players, but I skipped the fitness pool to squeeze that all in. The toon performs well on SFs, so I've invested in powers to keep everything moving smoothly and quickly. -
Quote:1 thousand inf isn't even pocket change to a 50, even the guy with zero market skills vendors IO recipes for 100 thousand each. The price on the last 5 sales was 50, there were 1800 items for sale and no bidders. So lets bid 1000.... yeah, just lazy.
I've managed to overcome my inner Scotsman, at least about salvage. I'm overjoyed to leave bids up and get a bargain for a purple recipe (only 65 million!) but I'm not going to creep-bid on common salvage to craft the thing. -
Relax. The number of people reading forums is tiny tiny tiny compared to the number of people using the market.
People in the market forum reveal their super-secret strategies all the time, without compromising their effectiveness. -
Thanks folks for the quick and helpful replies,
-
I was looking at Commanding Presence for the +recovery and +HP set bonuses, and noticed the proc. No-one here talks about that proc, and it's relatively cheap. Does that imply it isn't useful?
I don't know if my pets are actually getting taunted/placated, they're always running around acting silly, who knows if that's the cause.
