Quote:maybe not temp powers per say, but powers that are "add-ons" to core abilities. Something that, if it wasn't there, wouldn't take away from the distinctiveness of the character. If you take away the energy bolts, or the storm control, Thor is still a heavy hitter with a hammer. My tought process right now is that game-balance wise, pure any builds are too absolutarian. In games, especially if you designate a true distinction between range and melee attacks, finding yourself stuck at pure melee can be balance breaking.
Rellying on pure temporary powers also can be an issue, simply because they may not be available when you need them. -

Think temp powers. Wolverine can pick up a gun, but that's not his thing. Punisher is good in a fight (except against Daredevil), but you know someone is eventually gonna get shot. You really have to look at the essence of a character and go from there. Even characters like Thor, who have multiple powers with devastating effects, he always resorts to hitting things with his hammer, it's his thing and hey, it it's a hammer, it's what it's for.

Seriously! CO is Freedom Force with a budget.

Quote:If there was a way the somehow "slow down" the animations to where epic battles aren't over in seconds. I watch super battles in cartoons and think that that is the pace were games like this should be at.That is the first thing I do when I get into game and or create another character. Swith the tab to nearest enemy. Works for me.
Although I dont care much for the luck based system and I think it dont make sense for super heros (miss a box with a punch. wtf? I bet if Spiderman ever missed a stationary box he would lose serious face as an actual super hero. Not sure how can a super hero be taken serious if they cant even punch a stationary box or shoot one or slash one with a sword, let alone the enemy.), I think FPS in the way this game is set up would make it a skill to play and probably wouldnt mesh with this game as it does in the typical fps set up. And I'm good at fps twitch based games as they call it now and dont mind the system but think it would take the fun out of it if it was implemented in a game like COX. -

" even during the "glory years" of i6-i12 was it really advertised less than any other games that aren't WoW?"
In a word...YES! I had friends that were life-long comic fans that wanted a game where they could create their own superheroes and didn't realize this game even existed. You ask any layman about an MMO and WoW is the first word they spit out. If you ever walked into a comic shop or watched a superhero cartoon, you should have heard of this game and that's the problem. -
Quote:Totally from scratch. The idea was to take the good bits from CoX and change the bits we like less. For example the idea is to have some free form character development as well as
"classes", but not give a huge advantage to going freeform.
The idea is that you can do anything you can do in CoX in some way and probably import your characters from sentinel+ for story/costumes etc but at level 1 without gear.
The art objects will be new but eventually all the CoX bits will be covered and more.
Have a read of the Titan forums for more details.
If you can get a new game to where CoX is now, it would be a matter of getting the word out in advertising. Marvel is using the fact that you can't create your own superheroes as an actual selling point. People want their own creativity, we just need to let them know where they can do so. -
Honestly. You can sell anything to the Asian market by simply adding scantily-clad anime characters with big swords and seizure-inducing animations

Actually, Karma is simply balance. If your actions brake that balance, karma will self-correct it. NcSoft may have acted in a way to break the balance of things by closing CoH for no logical reason, so dropping stocks may simply be a means of Karma self-correcting.

Me personally, origins should have some effect on the type of affinities your characters have. If you are magic based, one would think you would have more dealings with all things magical. Now that doesn't mean you are locked in that roll, but there should be a benefit from combat in the realm of you origin.

If Matt Miller makes another MMO, it better be a superhero game!

Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. This should say it all. It should be a massive role playing game. When you play it, you should feel that you are engulfed in that world. The better games will leave little to take you out of character, where you literally have to "come up for air" when you log off. This is close to what we had here, you could go deep into being a superhero, or you could play for stats, but the choice was yours. As a developer, you learn the theme of your game and you learn how much interest there is in your genre and at that point your game will live or die on it's own merits and not whether or not it is "niche".
-
Oddly enough, NCsoft stocks are still in the "buy" column.

I have to agree that the future of MMOs is the interaction between online and offline gameplay. On top of that, if there were a way of intertwining social networking into the game world, you could social portals like FB and Twitter be portals to your game.

Quote:Old article. They're even worse now.

They're lower, right now, than they've been since April 21st 2010.
Those trends are steeper than an Alpine slope! -
Quote:I have to disagree, what will end is how humans interact and our definition of a civilization. We customize everything in our lives, at some point we will customize our very lives themselves."MMOs were a failing market niche, once represented by billion dollar giants such as World of Warcraft but slowly faltering due to a dying market. The end of the genre seemed inevitable, until the invention of the first true full sensory input apparatus. It is at this point that the end of human civilization truly began..."

Sadly, electronic gaming is a disposable medium. In my opinion, games have been moving toward the ability to allow the play to access a custom world of their choosing. Ultimately, we want a world we can walk into live in for a while and everything about it is suited to our particular entertainment.

In the GTA format. Wide, open world play-type.

I simply find it hard to believe that there is a such a large player base available and no one is out trying to create a game that caters to them.

". AoE attacks would not be impossible to avoid, they would just be impossible to avoid with mechanical evasion. You could, as I mentioned, simply leave the area of effect."
My idea has 2 forms of AoE, single plane and omni-directional.
" It would be unfair if AoE attacks were unavoidable by targets but not by the attacker. So they would not be."
In my idea, the single plane cover a wider area, but can be avoided by elevating above the plane. Omni directional attacks can hit everything, but have shorter range.
