She who shall not be named ... and the Beast

Well as one who is old enough to remember the first TV series staring Sarah Connor and Hellboy, the new one is almost nothing like that one.

The only sort of like it is the fact that Beauty's first encounter with the Beast led to her a life of fighting crime within the system. First series she becomes as DA, here she becomes a detective haunting by the death of her mother (someone watches Castle ) and her rescue from her mother's killers. And it's still set in NYC.

Beast is totally different. More tragic superhero back story than cursed at birth.

Still has way to many young pretty people in the world for my liking. The world isn't full of supermodels. You could almost always spot the bad guys in the first episode because they were the "normal" looking people present at the time.

Does Beast actually look...beastly? Or is he just a pretty boy with some slight skin issues and different colored eyes?

His "normal" face is very pretty on one side and mostly pretty on the other with the exception of the huge scare down that side.

He is the sole survivor of a black project down to volunteer soldiers that made them transgenic super soldiers. Think Hulk/werewolf/Buffy vampire, he gets beasty when he's angry, human with animal teeth and claws, very strong, close to instant transformation going in and out of that state but you never got a real good long look when he's beasts out. He would fit into the Grimmverse pretty well.

He's hiding not because he's hideous but because the people who did this to him have been trying to tie up loose ends. I would say that there's a chance that Beauty's mother was someone behind the development of whatever made him into what he is now.

She who shall not be named looks as good as the first year of Smallville.

What's the point of the beast if he looks normal and only "changes" into a beast. I mean it could be a good show and all, but that's really not the point of Beauty and the Beast.

Well he hides in the shadows, somewhat unkempt, lives in an abandoned chemical factory with his former roommate, a university chem professor, from before what happened to him. They are searching for a cure, of course. He was a young doctor who lost his family in 9/11, which led to him enlisting and then volunteering for the procedure. Of course he's been playing dead ever since surviving Afghanistan when the program was "erased", since the side effects, extreme rage, weren't controllable.

He does have a very short fuse and does kill with the ferocity of a wild animal. And of course he's sweet on the girl, who he rescued once before years ago, and she finds the whole tortured soul interesting especially once she finds that he's been playing hero over the years.

Here's one problem with the show. The big bad, the agency/pharma group that did this to him have been looking for him to clean up all the loose ends. However she and her partner tracks him, well his former, now current roommate down in a mater of days at the abandoned chemical factor. Now she goes back alone one night and finds him. So who did the bad guys get to locate him, Inspector Clouseau?

Now he's concern that since she's found him and discovered some of his transgenetic DNA hair sample, that she's on their radar and she would lead them back to him. Talk about lazy bad guys, waiting for the cops to do all investigation work, for years. Of course she keeps going back to his lair, maybe she'll end up pretend that she's dating the dumpy chem prof which will be a silly twist.

I'm betting it's only "unkempt" to a very minimum. Just enough to make the girls swoon over a 'bad boy' on the run. Unlike say, a Dr. Hobo unkempt where he keeps dead squirrels in his pockets.

That's the problem nowadays. They're trying, IMO, for the 'tortured soul who just happens to have rakish good looks and is just dangerous enough that daddy would lower the glasses' rather than going for the truly disfigured 24/7 and they would have to actually get to know him. The original B&B, at least, captured the fact that the Beast was actually beastly looking.

Agreed completely. The producers defended it in a Q&A as the show being about "the beast on the inside," which, according to them, is much more interesting than "a guy who looks like a lion" (insulting the very show that you needed to riff for inspiration, classy!). Except that, no, no that's not more interesting. A man who's a beast "on the inside" is what we call a jerk, or maybe a psycho depending on the level of beastliness involved. They're a dime a dozen.

Anyway, the thing I miss most is something I haven't seen many critics talk about: the World Below. The original show had a modern fairy tale feel with a secret underground city beneath New York, the conspiracies surrounding its existence and the culture clash between the modern Catherine and Vincent, who grew up in a medieval, monastic setting. By taking away the World Below and Vincent's lifelong isolation from civilization, and replacing it with a military experiment and the "beast" as a man born and raised in the modern world, the whole heart of the story's been ripped out. At that point, why even claim it's a reboot of the '80s show? Why not just call it something else?

This should have occurred to me earlier.

She's a nosy police detective haunted by her mother's murder. He's a transgenetic former super soldier with an impulse control problem. Together they fight crime.

Wouldn't that make him the Incredible Hulk?

When I first heard about this and read that the producer of the old show was behind it, I was excited. When I saw the trailer, I felt like I had been slapped in the face. I didn't even bother to check it out past that.

Don't know where you get that from. He's a noble man, a former Doctor, who was turned into a beast because he was seeking revenge. Now he is trying to escape that fate while both hiding from everyone during the day and occasionally helping those in trouble. The downside is his rescues are a bit on the violent side and you really shouldn't hang around to thank him while the blood lust is running free.

It's closer to the original story than a "reimage" of the old TV series.

The original story involved the Beast looking normal then transforming when he gets angry? I thought the entire point to the Beauty and the Beast story was the fact this beautiful woman falls in love with something that on the surface looks monsterous because she found the beauty within.

No, in the original story a prince was cursed to be as ugly outside as inside while here a young doctor's thirst for vengeance became externalized when he volunteered for an experimental program while in Afghanistan. The 80s TV series the Beast was simply born that way.

I meant that he *looks* that way. Every version of the story I've ever encountered makes the Beast hideous. The Disney version made him too attractive in my opinion, but allowances are made for it being a children's musical.

This one sounds more like Jekyll & Hyde. (Or Hulk, as noted above, but Hulk was just a superheroized J&H.) I vaguely recall a 1950s/1960s werewolf horror-movie version, but I may be misremembering it. I still say this misses the point of the original story, where a bad man becomes good and finds love in the redemption. Not a pretty boy with anger management issues.

But if you like it, that's cool.

Not sure if I like it, just reporting on it since Person of Interest wasn't on last week. I'm sure it will end up overly sappy with the two characters stuck in a star crossed lovers angle.

Arrow on the other hand so far rocked. The very slow reveal of his experience on the island and how it changed him adds a nice twist to the presentation of the origin story.

It basically is the old Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno Incredible Hulk - right down to the transformation being triggered by anger and signaled by glowing eyes, and the main character pretending to be dead while searching for a cure - but with a bland pretty boy and CGI facial distortion for a lead character, with a Bella Swan lookalike for a love interest. (Except if she were as bland as Bella, it'd be an improvement. My wife and I watched the first episode, and we were immediately turned off by her shrill personality, and I joked that maybe she's actually the "beast" of the title rather than Vincent)

I really suspect that someone, somewhere, said "What's hot right now? Avengers and Twilight? What old show can we buy for cheap that we can twist to take advantage of that demographic?"

Why is she dubbed, "She who shall not be named?" I've always wondered about the animosity held for this actress. Sorry, I have a personal interest in posing this question.

I guess that was a monicker that was hung on her by others here I guess as the one character from Smallville whose appearance was blamed for Clark never evolving into Superman, at least before Lois came into the series.

I gave up watching Smallville during or after the third season because it really didn't hold my interest any longer, with the exception of a few episodes such as the JLA ones or the larger team up episodes. So I don't quite understand the underlying reasons for the "she who shall not be named" since I didn't see a bulk of the series when she was still on but since people have used it here before and it's her return to TV as a lead, I thought it would be appropriate.
