Alcohol 120% (Not CoH related!)

Since this particular forum is rather dead now, and for good reasons, I figured... well, what the heck? This is at least a technical problem I have!

Last night I decided to make image files all of my Civ 4 install discs, in order to save wear on them. I used Alcohol 120%, since it has served me well so far. Making the disc images wasn't all that difficult, but using those images turned out to be a real pain.

The problem arose when I tried to mount the Warlords and Beyond the Sword disc images. Initially they would mount just fine, but when I attempted to dismount them (or even sometimes right-click in order to dismount them) I would get troubles. It would either cause Windows Explorer to hang, or else make it crash, or sometimes I'd get a pop-up from DEP telling me that it had to terminate Windows Explorer! The end result was always the same though. Windows Explorer terminates and auto-restarts, and I still can't dismount the disc image. The only way I could dismount it is if I restarted the computer.

The only thing I can think of is that I somehow made the disc images incorrectly. Which I guess means I'll have to tweak Alcohol 120%'s settings and try again. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experience with this!

I gave up alcohol after HeroCon '08. Especially Jagermeister.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I'm not super familiar with Alcohol 120%. But if I remember correctly, Civ 4 BTS, patch 3.19 removed the need to have to use the disc in the drive. You may need to download the patch and install it outside the game for it to work.

Some early games used discs which stored more data than the standard writable disks so e.g. a standard CD held 600Mb of data but come commercial games may have writen 700Mb to their disk.
You could use a process called overburning to try to copy them which basically meant that it would write data to portions of the disc beyond the standard areas. The problem was that whilst this would usually work for a small amount of overburn it was never guaranteed and the more additional capacity you needed to write the higher the chance of it failing.

None of that applies to the original poster. He is making a copy to his hard drive as an image. He is then using that file from his hard drive instead of using the CD/DVD.

OK I missed he was trying to run off of a virtual drive - issues with the formatting of the disk could possibly still mess up the image especially if the game accessed the drive directly rather than via the api - not seen that in the last 20+ years though.

May be worth trying different rippers and/or virtual drive software though. Another possibility is mixing up the disc type - CD/DVD/Blu Ray or whether its a data or video formatted disc.

I presume other discs imaged are working correctly also not clear as to whether the game works and the problem only occurs when ejecting the disc or if it fails to play at all.
May also be that the virtual drive isn't the first removable drive (or worse if it checks for D: specifically) - I'd expect that to cause problems playing rather than when ejected though.

Oh really? I patched the game from inside it (it has a check for updates option) but I can't recall if the version number was 3.19. I'll have to see when I get home!

If not then I'll have to search for the patch. I'd hope it's still somewhere on 2K's website, yeah?

Thanks!!!

I ripped my install discs for Sim City 4 and the Rush Hour expansion quite some time ago and the disc image files have always worked with the virtual drive. That's how I install and play that game now, using the disc images (I think I've misplaced the actual discs by now, d'oh).

Civ 4 plays just fine! Though I had to install BTS using the actual discs. If it's true that its most recent patch removed the need to have the disc in the drive then I'll figure this is a moot problem.

BTW...

Last night my civilization managed to build the Internet before completing the Manhattan Project, sometime in the 1400's. This was on Marathon speed and Deity difficulty level on a huge map. Yay!

I should prolly get out more, lol.

BTS Patch 3.19 confirmed. I ejected the disc and the game launched normally anyway. So there's no need for a virtual disc. Joy!

Thanks to all who helped!

I thought that I ought to mention that I finally upgraded from XP to Win7 over this last weekend. After re-installing Alcohol 120% and its virtual drive, I decided to attempt to install Civ4 and its two expansions again, using the disc image files I'd made.

There were absolutely no problems. I was able to install everything with the disc image files without a hitch. Mounting and un-mounting the images caused no errors or problems of any kind! I was impressed. I like Windows 7.
