Unity Event: Extra Life Charity Drive and Gameathon

I’ve been reading a lot of calls to do some sort of charity drive and I think it is a fantastic idea. So fantastic in fact that I’ve gone about organizing an Extra Life team for City of Heroes players, devs and anyone else who wants to join in. The City of Heroes community has always been known as one of the most charitable of all the MMO communities out there. This is another chance for us to be the heroes. Last year Paragon Studios took part in Extra Life as did thousands of others around the world. This year we’re inviting everyone to join us for a fun filled day in City of Heroes raising money for children’s hospitals around the world. The City of Heroes Extra Life team is working with Real World Hero and the Titan network on this event to make the in game portion of the event huge.

I imagine right about now you might have a few questions about Extra Life, how you can get involved and maybe some others I haven’t thought of. Instead of writing huge paragraphs I’m going to go for a list. So here are some answers to questions might have!

1. What is Extra Life? A 24 hour gaming marathon which raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals around the world.
2. When is Extra Life? Extra Life starts at 8 AM in your local timezone on Saturday October 20th and runs until 8 AM on Sunday October 21st.
3. 3. How do I sign up? Simply go to the team page and sign up from there! http://www.extra-life.org/team/CoH
4. Who decides which hospital I’m raising money for? You do! During sign up you get to pick from a list of Children’s hospitals around the world. The choice is yours. Last year I picked one that has a personal connection, one that my youngest brother went to as a baby. This year I’ve picked a more local hospital.
5. How can I get involved? Sign up and ask family, friend, coworkers, even strangers if you feel brave to sponsor you. Then join us for 24 hours in City of Heroes for all the fun.
6. I can’t dedicate a full 24 hours how can I still be involved? Come to the in game events we’re going to hold, tell friends about it, donate to team members.
7. Why are there so few members? Because this is the first official announcement!
8. What do I get from taking part? The satisfaction of having done an awesome thing, also sleep deprivation, many XPez (it’s a DXP weekend), and fun with friends and the CoH community.
9. Which server is this happening on? Ideally? All of them. But we’re realistic. We know server population has been a bit low recently. For now we will say all servers and if that changes I’ll be sure to update everyone.

Given the NCSoft message today, I wanted to bump this. If you can't participate, consider sponsoring some of the players.

The value of an MMO is in its community, and this community has always been a step above the others. Come together for a good cause and perhaps shine a spotlight on what NCSoft is so willing to destroy.

If nothing else, we go out with our heads held high.

I just wanted to give an update on how this has been going so far. As of right now Team City of Heroes is 34th out of 1,736 teams. We've raised $2,190.98 for for Children's hospitals around the world. And there are 29 of us on the team.

We've already accomplished something amazing but there is still time to join in! Come join us.

C'mon people and donate!
You don't have to be a member committed to playing 24 hours, just head over to the site and donate money to the team, which goes to the charities.

If we can raise money for a dinner, we can raise more for children in hospitals!

It may sound a little more complicated than it really is. Just go and donate what ever small amount you're able to (if you are able to) and represent Team CoH!

We are Heroes. This is what we do.

A friend and I are both participants in this and have both raised $63. My goal is $200....sloooowly getting there. Extra Life is an excellent organization as is the Children's Miracle Network.

Team CoH is currently at $3,165.00!!!

I would love to see just 1/4 of the players who were VIP donate their monthly sub to this cause... that would be an AMAZING amount and truly show how this community is truly Heroic. So that is my challenge for the community. It's easy to say you are a hero...but it's another thing to actually play the role in real life. There are thousands of children and families who are assisted daily by CMN...and this is your chance to be a hero to those families and children.

I want team CoH to be in the top 10; preferably the top 5 of this campaign, but to do that we need your help. I'm not saying you have to donate $15...heck even $5 from the thousands of players of this game would make a world of difference.

The top team in this campaign is sitting at $25,304.98. So in order to overtake them and show what an awesome community this game has...that it is full of heroes (and villains with ulterior motives ) all we would need is for everyone to donate $5 to easily overtake the top spot...and then some

So please... take the 5 minutes and few dollars it would take and donate to the Extra Life campaign. If we MUST go out... I want our impact to be felt throughout the world...in a positive way...being heroes and helping families in need.

I'm not going to "advertise" my own personal link...I would rather people just pick a random person and donate. It doesn't matter if I reach my goal or not...what truly matters is that we raise the funds to be true heroes.

Exactly. As it stands Team CoH is currently ranked #21 with $3,340.00.

I am hoping people will donate soon and get us in the top 10 at least. Personally I have donated $36 and plan on doing at least another $20 more. One donor has donated over $800. This is a great chance for the heroes of CoH to show they are real life heroes by supporting a great cause that helps millions of children every year.

I personally donated $100 dollars to the cause because its a good one, and work has been generous with overtime lately.

If just the VIPs from Unity Rally had chipped in their October payment that they aren't being charged...We'd be way up!

I am getting excited for my gaming marathon....and kinda dreading it at the same time LOL! 24 hours is gonna be ROUGH but I am doing it for a great charity and it will be one of the last times I get to play with one of my friends.

Still ranked #22... Here is hoping when payday hits Friday we will see an influx of donations. We need some heroes to step up and help these kids!

Don't think you have to give a lot to make a difference. For some teammates a $5 donation would be a doubling of their total! and chipping in the $15 VIP subscription that got cancelled for Oct (or November) would be around a 50% increase for 1/2 of the folks on the team!

If you didn't get a chance to make a Donation for the Dev's Dinner (like I didn't) then consider donating for this.

I think this is a great idea! I fondly remember the city of Denver's gaming BenCons (benefit gaming conventions) where all profits (not revenue, gotta cover overhead) were donated to charities.

I'll see if I can get the numerous formerly active sgmates who've been inactive since the "Sunset" announcement of 8/31 behind this initiative. ((We used to have SG teamups and TFs daily, and I know they miss CoH.))

It's a great charity process and I thank everyone who is, has and will be contributing!
