NCSoft Updater

So I saw this on Twitter yesterday:

I tested this at work:

I tried to "Update" but that failed.

However, I did do a "Repair" and then this:

I'll also note that a close friend reinstalled from scratch on Saturday afternoon just to come to the Atlas Park rally.

Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else had issues with the updater and/or installing.

Does that still work? I remember shortly after the NCLauncher going live that the old CoH Launcher no longer worked.

As always, I could be mistaken...

Not using the old cohupdater.exe, but using the "cityofheroes.exe -project coh" trick that's always let you bypass the updater- directly launching the game.

The command looks like this (64bit windows on top, 32bit on bottom... modify the path if you installed it somewhere else):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh

(OS X also can bypass the updater, but not sure off the top of my head what exactly what the command is)

Ah, I just checked myself and it seems to be fine.

How long has it been since you updated your installation at work? Was it very out of date? They don't keep the xdelta updates around to go from every version to the latest, so it might have just been too old, and so had to do the larger, slower method instead via repair.

The installation was fairly old. However, my test was in response to what I saw on my Twitter feed (that was retweeted by Titan Network).

It implied that the game was removed from the Launcher, and that the Launcher was no longer providing updates.

Nothing nefarious here, it's just a side effect of how the patching system works. Patches are sets of instructions on how to modify the game files to get from one version to another. There are hundreds if not thousands of past versions of the game, and generating patches for all of them would take months and require terabytes of storage. Instead, they just generate patches for the versions that are likely to be encountered. Right now, there are patches for what looks like Issue 20.5 and newer, plus specific versions of Issues 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 12, 14, and 18. You're upgrading from a late version of Issue 20, and the error message is telling you they don't have a patch for that specific old version.

(There is a way they could generate patches that would let users upgrade from any prior version: each patch is strictly an update from one version to the next, and upgrading from an ancient version to the current one means applying all the in-between patches. The problem is that this shifts the burden onto the end user: as many patches undo or over-write each other, the resulting unnecessary work would cause updating from an original install CD to take weeks, and download gigabytes of useless data in the process.)

ive not seen anything odd with my launcher either

i dont think they will remove it from the launcher until the game closes or they sell to another company
