Why IS the CoH community the best one?
- How long is a piece of string?
- What is the sound of one hand clapping?
- Is the angle of a dangle truly inversely proportional to the heat of the beat?
- How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
- Why is the CoH community truly the best?
There are some questions that simply defy answer.
It might be the cooperative focus of the game. Hard to say. I'll say you can see the difference in the forums though.
Post - "How do I (insert basic newbie question here)?"
Most other games: (string of "lol noob" and misinformation mixed into the flames)
Here: typically, people tripping over themselves to give the info.
I never claimed to represent the PvP community. I'm merely stating facts that were posted by other players on our forums as to why they hate and avoid PvP in this game.
As is always the case in any game the obnoxious, foul mouthed, jacktards gave the good natured PvP players a bad rep. |
Even in game, I've seen it done to others in pvp, pre-i13 and sometimes even after i13 people get abused and or people try to make their pvp experience the worse possible experience in a game ever. And this wasnt strictly on Freedom. Reason why the i13 changes took place in the first place was that "certain people" was doing everything in their power to prevent "new players to pvp" from having a good time. It worked too. Many new players stayed away from PVP and when the changes came out, most of those people that spewed the abuse in pvp left. Of course there was a few hold outs. In reality, obnoxious, fouled mouth, jacktards as Forbin decribed them, killed PVP. Which probably worked better in the end as the Devs did have more time to focus on PVE content.

Aside from the many reasons mentioned above, I think it's the superhero mentality -- most people playing want to be heroes and just help out. Sure, there are some Captain Hammers out there, but in general, it's a pretty nice group of people playing.

I made a more lengthy post over at the titan network forum, but in general I think it boils down to:
Personal Expression. This game allows you to invest a lot in "owning" your character and it's story. When invested in the character, people will invest more in the connections to other characters as well.
Fellowship. The sidekick mechanics and relatively low level of "skill" involved, make it easy to group with a wide range of players. Next to this the global channels make it easy to be a part of not just on group, focussed on one aspect of the game, but multiple groups at the same time.
Most of the on-topic answers are going to end up sounding the same, but in an incredibly transparent attempt to bump my post count, I'll echo a lot of what others have said.
I'll also point out that no, pre-i13 PvP was not identical to PvE - although it is a heck of a lot closer than it is now. Unresistable damage and, for Defenders at least, unresistable debuffs are a large chunk of the old differences; now it pretty much is an entirely new character. I've also had mostly positive experiences with the PvP community here. Yes, there are a few people that are annoying, but most of the people have been friendly both inside and outside of the PvP areas. From my experience, I'd say that there are more jerks per capita in the strictly PvE crowd than the PvP players - but in a selective memory sort of thing you just kick them or leave the team and forget about them in PvE and talk about how great the community is while you remember that one person that one time might have killed you while you were trying to get a badge in a PvP zone for life.
As for disliking PvP because it got some powers nerfed for PvE - specifically Energy Transfer - there was literally no logical excuse to change it due to PvP concerns on July 9th of 2008 while already working on the i13 PvP changes (i13 went live on December 2nd of that year) that would have made the fast activation time be a hindrance in PvP performance. With the separation of effects, IMO any of the powers that were changed due to PvP concerns should have been rolled back as part of i13. That was the whole point in separating the effects, after all.
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

I think it's the best community because it's like an awesome bar. You can stop by whenever you like, have a quick drink (mission) or party all night (TFs, trials and story arcs). There's great people to talk to while you do it, the owners (devs) might stop in to join you, and if you want you can try some home brews (AE).
Why is the CoH community the best one? Because we don't try to be anything we're not. Good people sharing enjoyment of a great game.
