hi im a new freemium player in city of heroes, and ive learned only today that freemium player has no access to invention systems and etc..... after all those hours of checking forums to see which class and build fits my taste.....

so... now im looking for a build that might be able to solo AV's and "if possible" GM's too on only SO's, while doing not too bad in PvP. ive seen many posts that says MM's do good on soloing bosses, but i am looking for something more like,,, controllers, corruptors, or defenders. (i was going to try ill/dark/fire controller before i learned ill never be able to perma-PA it :< )

any recommendations or possibilities?

Controller's or MM's would require purchasing the AT license in the Paragon Market or having enough Paragon Rewards tokens to fill Tier 5.

Premium players do have access to IO's if they purchase a monthly Inventions license (regularly priced at 150 PP ($2.00) for a 30 day license but currently on sale for 80 PP ($1.00) for a 30 day license) or fill Reward Tier 7.

Auction house access has a similar 30 day license with the same pricing and the same sale price this week and has a Lifetime AH access when you fill Tier 4 in the Paragon Rewards.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I think illusion controllers, and especially illusion/rad, were some of the earliest and best AV killers along with masterminds. But your second problem is going to be that the Mastermind AT and Controller AT are not available to free players unless you've purchased them.

To be honest... while I've solo'd a few AVs before, it's hardly what most players strive for, and doing so on SOs is (to my mind) really setting yourself up for some frustration. But it's a challenge, I guess.

That's tricky. Without the license as T_J mentions above, Masterminds and Controllers are out. Ranged squishies have difficulty consistently soloing AVs and GMs even *with* inventions without very strong builds. In almost every MMO if you want to go one on one against the strongest NPC foes, you need enough defense to keep yourself alive, enough damage to bring them down, and enough sustainability (endurance, mana, power, whatever) to last long enough to make it happen. Most things for obvious reasons don't have all three automatically.

I think your best bet is a high damage corruptor, something like Fire/Rad or Fire/Kin. With just SOs, you're not going to bring an AV down without help, but fortunately for you in City of Heroes we can cheat like no other game. We have inspirations which are little temp powers that can give us a temporary boost to damage, defense, resistance, heal back some health, etc. By level 50 you'll have twenty slots of these, and some inspirations are very powerful and not difficult to get. Medium strength lucks, for example, are strong enough that two will buff your defense so high it will reduce an AV's chance to hit you to the game's minimum floor and they last a minute each. You can easily have ten minutes of being nearly impossible to hit.

If you use inspirations to take care of the defensive side, its possible you can build a ranged character with SOs that is strong enough to get there on the offensive side, and you're there.

The fact of the matter is, if you're limited to SOs, you're never going to have a build remotely as strong as what a player with inventions can make. So if you're looking for some trick there, there isn't one. But if you don't care about that, you just want to be able to play the game and do most of the things other players can do, that's possible in this game because so much is within reach of players that take advantages of the tools available to them, including temp powers, inspirations, and the like, most of which are available to premium players.

Ill/Rad was going to be my suggestion..

Should mention that back in the day it could take hours and hours to solo some of the AVs.

For ranged characters Dark Miasma is very effective with just SOs.
Massive controls even on a corruptor with Fear and the stun in Howling Twilight plus a huge heal that -tohits.

Storm, Radiation Emission, Traps can all be effiective on Single Origin enhancements. Kinetics are always welcome on team regardless of slotting just having Speed Boost.

i think i read somewhere that rad/sonic defenders on only SO's can solo AV's also? is it true?

and i can spend a lil to get two ATs which will be with me permenantly, but i dont think im willing to pay for inventions every month..

The best you could get for a loooong time was SOs and Hamis.

I think premiums can use HOs, that would allow for a lot of slotting.

That's true... would be difficult to get them without access to the auction house, but HO's would help a lot.

A quick example of a Fire-Dark Corruptor on SOs and Hamis, not even a perfect example but could most likely keep up.

35ish def in s/l
28ish def in e
-40ish to hit on enemies (darkest night + fearsome)
an 80% heal every 8 seconds

Fire/ corruptors are a strong choice. However -- and I realize you'd have to buy the set, but you could run it on SOs -- I would suggest Beam Rifle. I think (I'm not certain without figuring out what kind of recharge rates you can get on SOs) Fire can do a bit more single-target damage, but BR also debuffs regeneration, which is extremely important on those classes of foe. Depending a bit on the specific enemy,

For Secondary, the best I can think of are Kinetics, Radiation, or Time Manipulation. Any will work, but they each require different strategies.

You'll want Hasten (especially for Radiation; you'll switch between Accelerate Metabolism and Hasten to keep up your attack chain and debuffs), so the Speed pool, and probably Leadership (Assault and Tactics).

For APP/PPP, Soul Mastery is probably your strongest choice, but I could see arguments for Mace (possibly a strong one here but I can't remember what debuffs, if any, the pet can apply), Mu, or even Power Mastery.

Edit : Kin/Sonics and Rad/Sonics used to be able to solo certain AVs on SOs. I think Shivans and nukes were a big part of this strategy. I honestly don't know if it still works.

A Fire/Dark corruptor can be a powerhouse, even on SO's. It combines very good damage with good debuffs and decent survivability. True, an SO build won't be as powerful as a good IO build but it'll do the job just fine.

After all, for the first several years the game was out SO's were what we had to work with, other than Hamidon Origin enhancements at level 50 which were hard to come by. We got by just fine on those "obsolete" SO enhancements for a long time and quite a lot of us still do.

Can an SO build do the things that a top of the line IO build can? No, but it can be a valued teammate and quite effective. I'll take a good player on SO's any day over a bad player with a 20 billion inf IO build... and I've run into both many times. It's the person behind the keyboard that's important, not the build of the character they're playing.

For right now as you're learning the game don't worry a lot about an ideal combination; just play something that looks fun and enjoy. Later on when you've learned your way around you'll have plenty of time to make an uber powerful character. I usually suggest a Scrapper as a first character because they're powerful enough to kill quickly while also being durable enough to be forgiving of mistakes. They're still highly effective in the high levels.

can anyone suggest a good fire/dark corruptor build using only SO's? o.o

A Super Reflexes Tanker can hit the soft-cap pretty easily on just SOs as well, and Dark Melee has a self heal built into it's attack chain.

That combo could probably solo a few AVs on just SOs. It will be slow, but it should be possible.

I haven't gone over and really optimized this and much of it's personal preference but I might do something like this. Right now I wouldn't take Inferno but for the next issue the nukes are getting changed considerably; therefore I tossed it in.

Please don't take anything here as gospel; I'd probably change a few things myself if I were playing it... for example you may well need to pull some recharge in attacks in favor of endurance reduction. This build puts you within 15% of the soft cap for S/L so one small purple gets you close and one medium purple gets you there. This is similar to the build I have on my Fire/Dark corruptor although I have a few billion invested in IO's on him.

The Dark Miasma slotting is nearly a direct copy of the slotting I had on my Dark/Dark defender back before IO's and I know it works well. Your key powers are Fearsome Stare, Tar Patch, Fire Ball & Rain of Fire. Blaze is your big hitter single target attack and Fire Breath is a nice cone attack. Shadow Fall gives you stealth and defense, and combined with Super Speed it gives you invisibility. Leadership has such good numbers on support characters I always try to work it in.

As you level the character up I recommend you get the Atlas Medallion and Portal Jockey accolades to increase your endurance. Here's more info on those.

AVs and GMs are not really meant to be soloed. While plenty of experienced players have proven that they can be soloed by the right build, I'm not sure why that's your goal right off the bat. Why not play the game for a while and save making an uber AV-killing machine for later when you're ready to step up to the next level?

Of course this advice assumes that I've correctly understood you that you are a new player. If you meant that you are an experienced player who has only newly become a freemium, then disregard everything I said.

If they purchased Staff a SR/Staff tanker would get the softcap and basically have no end problems with the capability to switch to another form when they team up with someone that buffs recovery.

My SR/Staff had me thinking that if I didn't have my IO license and I ever went premium they'd be one of the first characters I'd unlock.
