Empathy/Water Blast

Ok, so I'm looking for some ideas as to where to take this character I have in mind. I've never played a Defender before except some "joke" characters before. I've always played melee toons so I really don't know how to build a support/ranged guy.

Pretty much I want a healer, Empathy seemed the most obvious choice, and water blast gave me an idea for a character idea that I finally would like to play around with. What should I slot for? +recharge +defense? Ideas about sets? I've looked at other builds and Doctored Wounds seems like the "go to" set for healing sets.

Thanks for any help that you guys come up with.

Empathy thrives on Recharge, blast sets blast better when they have their blasts up more often. Also, Empathy is a buff set. Yes you have 3 healing powers and self healing attack in WB. The key with Empathy is having something to buff. For a defender that means soloing is about the worst thing you can do to yourself, since over half your powers require a seperate target (and to be fair, even on a Controller, Empathy soloing is painful). So build for Recharge and focus on making your teammates unkillable so that they can be the targets instead of you.

Yeah, I figured that solo'ing on a healer would be rough but I've been playing long enough that I can call on a few people to farm me up or group with me. I find that people actually DO want to group it's just that most times you can't find the important pieces to make it work.

So, going for recharge I should 5 slot Doctored Wounds on all healing powers, and pick up Fighting and Leadership for LotG?

Or you can try getting a few fellow gamers and make an all green team. A team of all empath (defenders or trollers), is a game breaker.

I don't like the fighting pool on defenders (even though the numbers are really nice) unless I'm just a weave away from softcap, but being able to skip tough in the upcoming issue may make a stronger case for it (if only I could skip Boxing or Kick instead ). I pretty much always get some of the Leadership pool on Defenders and since you're going to want to team as much as possible, seems a strong reason to me. If you get your recharge to a good level, maybe look at building for Ranged Def, since you don't have a compelling reason to enter into melee like you would for Kinetics primary. Enough recharge to me is perma-Hasten.

The biggest thing that strikes me about this build is the lack of recharge slotting in Recovery Aura - this is one of Empathy's signature buffs along with Fort and AB, and you want it up as often as possible. Speaking of Fortitude, you generally want to prioritize recharge, defense and tohit in that order for Fort since most people take care of their accuracy issues on their own - so I'd recommend more Defense slotting there.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking of yourself as a 'healer' - it's the buffs that are really going to make you an asset especially in the middle to late game (and it's the buffs that are the reason all-Empath teams steamroll through content the way they do).

Speaking of this, if you can afford it a LotG +7.5% IO and three Membrane Exposures will make Fortitude rock (ok, technically the Membranes alone make it rock but the LotG is a nice addition).

What would you suggest I toss in Fortitude then? The reason I have Adjusted Targeting in there is for the +5% global recharge rate of course the +7.5% LotG is self explanatory. Red Fortune maybe? For the Def and it also carries a +5% global recharge bonus.

I'd just do the LotG and 3 Membranes. Sometimes it's better to slot a power for enhancement and not worry about the set bonuses. Plus you can use the slots saved to give Recovery Aura some recharge.

This.
Often find I slot Recovery Aura with 1 recharge, 1 endmod/rech, 1 endmod/rech these days. Pushes recharge well into ED territory and gives some extra +endmod. The base value on RA is plenty good for 99% of teammate builds out there you might be buffing so any endmod is bonus.

For Fortitude what Aedon suggests is probably the best slotting as a general rule. That said when pinched for slots on my high end builds I often save one slot by dropping a single Membrane and going with 2 Membranes, 1 LotG +7.5%. When your global recharge is all cranked up the 3rd Membrane really doesn't cut much time off or help you buff another target.

As far as the set bonuses as an Empath you are generally swimming in places to grab 5% recharge bonuses so not worrying about it here in Fortitude makes perfect sense.

Have to head off to the real world for now but I'll take a longer look at the build later.

Work in progress (I'll have more time after work) but here's a very quick rework of yours.

Okay, I've 2 builds. The first is your "basic" high recharge build, no real attempt at defense of any sort ... your defense is teammates and inspires combined with your Auras. The second is an incarnate capped S/L build. Both are very close to perma Hasten and can get there with a bit more effort with things like Panacea and/or boosters. Neither is cheap and use multiple Purple sets. No idea what sort of budget you have but I tend to build in Mids what I'm going to work towards (even if it might be months in an infrequently played character). I also make use of my second (and third) builds using a playable first build while getting the other builds IO'd.

I don't tend to put either Resurrect or Absorb Pain in my builds. I find using an Awaken followed by a quick Clear Mind and Heal Other sufficient, but that's just me. I'd probably swap out Maneuvers in the first build for Resurrect and move the second slot to another power if you wanted Resurrect. Absorb Pain is a bit more problematic if you want to slot it up any. I'd probably look at Shocking Bolt first if I wanted to slot it up. (Or Maneuvers again and just slot it with 2 common Heal IO's). This first build also has enough stealth to run right past most foes plus Recall Friend to quickly stealth mission objectives and get not so stealthy teammates there. It also has Dehydrate and a well slotted Whirlpool the second build lacks (not sure what exactly the proc changes will do to the slotting in Whirlpool). I strongly recommend Spiritual Radial Paragon for both builds. I also rather like Clarion Radial Epiphany (not for the mez protection though that's nice) but for the +special power boost like effect. And for the second build Ageless Radial Epiphany for the Debuff resistance, I like my defense as is thank you.

And build number two, S/L defense at 62%. Tempted to see what happens if I went Agility over Spiritual, dropped Kick and added Dehydrate back in. Should net about the same or slightly more defense (especially if I used some boosters) and give me another attack power.

Doom, I like your builds however I went a cheaper route with the one I am presenting with mid ground S/L Defense with high enough recharge. However, I did go with Agility over spiritual so your greens are going to be brighter however.

Having said that the purpose of this build for a good mix of affordability along with decent mixure of performance. You have perma-hasten which is good enough IMO and any extra recharge is gravy. Additionally since this is running Agility your buffs on Defense and your Maneuvers will be tastier to your teamies. Not much more but still. Lastly, you have lots a good amount of To-Hit with some nice bonuses to assist you including increased perception, stealth, KB protection.

Definitely a very solid and less expensive build (and or less time consuming to get all the IO's). Few small things I'd tweak.

Kismet's bonus is based on the assumption the power it's in is active. Therefore I'd move it and its slot to Maneuvers since there's room there.

I'd really like to see a 6th slot in Aqua Bolt for an Achilles -resist. Every time it goes off it not only boosts your Emp's damage but every attack by the entire team/league that connects while the debuff lasts.

I'd also adjust the level of a number of the special IO's if I plan on doing much exemplar work. (The knockback IOs, the LotG +recharge, the Winter's Gift)

My advise deals with only 'Adrenalin Boost', since i've seen varies ways other people have slotted it. My way, is three crafted recharges and a crafted heal & end mod IO. The why is simple, you want up as fast as possible because it is such a good buff. The other reason is, once you're doing 50th lvl trials and such, alot of people have the heal/end holes patched-up for their toons, but Adrenalin Boost also gives a rechange bonus even they can love.

So as a rule, I don't worry about trying for a set bonus on Adrenalin Boost. Just do whatever, but max out its recharge.

Don't you know that discussion of power selection/slotting can ONLY be based on hearsay, rumor, idle speculation, and bald-faced lies??!? ~Elf_Sniper

I just was messing around with this same set on Mids. I did NOT look at these other builds. But I can tell you the specifics.

It was range defense cap hover blaster style. Spiritual Incarnate brings both RA's to around 50 ( or 60 secs ) second down time. So the recharge was at 140 seconds I think for both and the duration was 90 seconds. Regen was in the 800% range and endurance recovery was in the 8.4 range. All the attacks where slotted to be useful. Basically all the AOEs where 5 slotted with Positron for the recharge bonus and all the other ST attacks where 6 slotted with Thunderstrike. Heals were 5 slotted with Doc wounds for recharge bonus as well. Geyser was 6 slotted with Defender ATO lower end. Melee and AOE were in the 20% range.

If it sounds like this build would suit your need then I will redo and repost.

I'd tweak my slotting in Whirl Pool. Having not actually played Water Blast in game yet I was treating it much like a variant clone of Sleet/Freezing Rain using the large number of available procs for damage output. However, it has a nice solid base damage unlike Sleet/FR and would therefore benefit from some damage enhancement (pushed into ED territory) as well as using procs for further damage (provided one isn't chasing set bonuses in it). Slotted up as such you have an AoE doing 215'ish damage plus the debuffs ready to go every 15-20 sec..

@Plainguy
As I suspect a lot of us who enjoy playing around in Mids do I have a rather large collection of builds saved ... so I'd love to see your build.
