Anime cosumes in CoH: do they work?
I've recently gotten into anime - i know, I'm a little late. Anyways, I like some of the looks and colors, especially for my staff scrapper.
Question: does anime translate well into CoH? I've tried to make several costumes based off some of the anime characters I like and they look...odd. Anyone able to make these kinds of anime martial arts looks work in CoH? |

Well, I suppose it depends on (A) which anime and (b) which pieces. I know there have been enough super-sayan-uber-goku-vegetable-super-glowy-guys genericed over the years...
I had these in mind specifically for my staff scrapper (just with, um, normal sized female anatomy):
When you see yourself in a crowded room / do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped
Will you step in line or release the glitch / can you fall asleep with a panic switch

-Female Player-
We don't have the long hair or longer, flowing costume bits... which has always made me a bit sad, myself.
@Brightfires - @Talisander
That chick what plays the bird-things...
There are people who have made approximations of both anime and video game characters using the City of Heroes costume creator, many of them well done. Unfortunately, I don't remember them off the top of my head.
Look around the art forum, in particular the 'Best Costume' thread stickied up at the top.
Most of my female characters got anime inspiration.
Would love for some anime and hairstyles faces, even a bit over the top.
Some are easy some well you just can't.
Sailor Moon is quite easy. I usually stick in at least a flaw or two so its not a "copy".

For the bottom... play Aion. >.<
Most of the people I've seen in the game have multi-colored hair and they don't seem out of place. My first two toons had red/blue and turquise/black hair respectively, which is kind of odd given that I have no explanation for them... The cool thing is you totally CAN make that kind of anatomy in the character creator. Gigantic bust, waste with the circumference of a can of soda, and all on what looks like a 13 year old, and then give them super strength. Completely possible.
Though it would be cool if we could get an outlandish hair option. I'm still waiting for hair capes myself, and then after that we can get giant asymmetric spiky hair. As far as outfits go, it would be nice to have more long coats covered in buckles or have gigantic shirt collars.

As far as creating costumes in game. I think the best thing to do is create a character of your own then give them a cosplay option. My Little Sister character has had a few over the years. I've been complimented on the Yoruichi costume I did. You can see it in my sig.
It's not perfect. Basically what I did was look at each part of the costume then slide through every option to find the best match. I mean every last single option. I think at the last meet and greet they said there was a number of costume options on the exa- scale. So the odds that you can make a decent tribute are pretty good.
I would grab a bunch of images of your favorite character and if you can find alternate costumes get those too. Then start with the CC and perhaps you can do a great rendition of one but not another. At the end of the day you know what is important and what you were trying to go for. You can always go to the costume help thread and see if someone else can find you a couple pieces in the CC that will help you complete and sell the look.

Small padded gloves.
The top would likely be something in the tops with skin section.

Tried something...
The shoulder rings was just an add-on. Used the barbarian corset, because I hate skin tights (specially for white)
The gunslinger waistcape can be cool to set up a kimono belt...
Hope it can inspire you a bit!
One of my characters, who I need to play more, is a cosplayer. You have to be careful though. You can't just completely copy a copyrighted character unless they are your character or you have permission from the creator to do so. Jim Butcher has this trouble playing Dresden in the game. Note my character's costumes always have essentially the same physical shape and the rat features. Some of my other anime homages have been next generations and crossover inspired.
This character was inspired by Shizuo from Durarara!!
This character was inspired by Kodachi Kuno (with maybe a touch of Poison Ivy)
Here's my Godzilla girl:
These images weren't used as in-game characters, but to provide visuals for two Legend of Five Rings characters:
This character represents a possible child of Hinata and Naruto:
This character represents a possible child of Ranma and Tanya Rey (Gold Digger)
And none of these I played live, but made just to show that the characters from anime could be duplicated at need. They're from Darker Than Black:

Ooh... Have you tried using the ladies steampunk jacket for your Saber? Doesn't either that or the cowboy pack come with poofy shoulders?
