Yeah Vanessa's is the end of the First Ward string, night Ward starts separately with Mistress Maria.
I'd run the repeatables ad nauseum. Vickers (everyone), Road Flare(Resistance/hero), Mr Caldoun(Villain/Loyalist), Trina Furst(hero/resistance) and Angela Hu(villain/loyalist). At least 3 will give you missions. A pretty good variety too.
And as a point of note, Mistress Maria starts at 30, but the follow on contact (no spoilers) is locked at 31 :P And Maria's arc is short, to the point you likely won't pop up a level completing it.
Luckily, there is also Fireball, Trilogy, and the 2 Night Ward Repeatables Sir Lionel and Atherton Cromwell, all 4 of whom are open to everyone.

There are repeatable missions available in FW (contact depends on your alignment, so check the wiki). However, there are only about three or four different types of missions. Also, my character was a Mind/Psy Dom, so while she's safe, she isn't a fast leveller. I ended up dual-boxing with a scrapper on another account, putting the Mind Dom on follow with Confuse set on auto. It was still somewhat painful, but it was faster and I got XP for two characters out of it.
Keep checking for other people in the zone, too. I managed to find teams very occasionally, but FW is pretty sparsely populated on Defiant.

I think most people who've played through the First Ward arcs finish up Vanessa's and think, "Huh? That's it?" The story doesn't seem to come to an end so much as just stop.

If you're 24, freeze your XP, run Stephanie's arc in Striga, get the ring, unfeeze your XP, run the Hanson Brothers arcs till you get to 30. Or, as an alternate after Stephanie, run the Croatoa arcs. The Croatoa arcs unlock the Katie Hannon TF, and the Hanson brothers unlock Ernesto Hess. Always nice to be able to run those TFs. Both routes should get ya to 30 to start Night Ward.

Hey gang, I made a Praetorian the other day to run through all the story arcs from Nova through Night Ward, but I just finished the Vanessa DeVore arc in First Ward and there is no lead in to the next contact and the story isn't complete. Any ideas?
