Identifying Free Players
I dislike the idea on principle. The few free players who do decide to grief, well, isn't that what the star/note system is for?
The Star/Note system is highly individual to each player - I use the star system entirely different than anyone else would - every time I team with someone I give them a star a leave a note of when we teamed and which toon I was on. Every time we team again they get another star.

Why can't they just be "players," like everyone else? |
Do we really need to put a marker on them and make it obvious that they are not VIP? |
Why not just... ask? |
Why are you so negative and assume the worst about Prem/VIP's, when this game is well known for having the friendliest, most helpful community around.
How about all free players have their characters default idle animation be the "savage" (screaming ape emote from the animal pack) animation. That way a simple glimpse around Atlas can spot all the freebie players.
Oh have all their chat in the Help and LFG channel be preempted by "duh, I'm free"
seriously, I agree with the OP's concerns, and like sending pms before invites... Sadly, the LFG channel is the best solution we got currently.

*yeah, I quoted myself.
VIP - Premium - & Free players are PLAYERS regardless of how they pay (or don't.)
So flagging players as "free" is totally unnecessary.
Special Salvage cannot be traded at all.
Some other pieces of salvage, like Event and Invention, can be traded. |
I am on the fence as far as the original intent of this thread. On one hand I think a marker for freebs could come in handy for people running groups or who feel the need to be in a non-free chat situation. On the other hand I can see this as a 'scarlet letter' of potential (albeit silly) segregation with VIP's who would rather not team with a freeb for various reasons. I wouldn't exactly blame them, they paid for the game and the freeb didn't, but it can potentially cause them to miss out on a good teammate. As it is, I have teamed with freebs who were better than the VIP's on the team and had superb bios to boot. I would hate to have someone miss the chance to team with those people because of their short-sightedness.
It's my opinion that, if there were to be some sort of visual identifier for VIP or Free, it should be something that one has to look for and not be clearly visible upon simply seeing the character (such as somewhere in the character info tabs, like the badges page).
Although, it'd be best if it was something that one could discover through searches probably... hmmm...
Another idea is just simply giving an automatic response to tells saying This player does not have full access to the tell system or some such thing.
All the jokes aside, this isn't about creating an easy identifier for processing... This is just about making the game experience better and smoother for everyone and putting some information in the hands of experienced players.
For the most part... I think people knowing that a player is a free player would make them want to help and give them a good playing experience.
Much like when we all flock to a new player on the forums.
Yes, there will always be some lousy people.
Besides... if we can't tell who is Free or not... How can we avoid obtaining one of their deadly FP viruses??
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan

Also you could show off your a powerset they can't get, if they like it they may want it more, witch is good.

And where exactly did I ever say that only players on free accounts griefed people?

I don't think it is a valid justification.
Must we identify free players? Why can't they just be "players," like everyone else? Do we really need to put a marker on them and make it obvious that they are not VIP? Why not just... ask?
