Death of 1000 Cuts (NVIDIA Geoforce 240GT)

For the last few months my game has been crashing to no video input. It has required a cold reboot of the computer. The latest video drivers didn't fix it, in fact it got worse and it seems to have gotten even worse after that. No other application is affected, not even other MMOs.

I have tried the following:
Made sure all of my device drivers were current
Upgraded OS
More RAM
Defragged
Optimized Memory
Cleaned the registry
Reformatted harddrive and clean installed everything
Changed Antivirus software
Removed extraneous programs (including Pando Media Booster from another MMO)
Shut down anything nonessential in task manager

I'd run a dxdiag except I can't find any that are truly 'free', the free ones come with adware and malware.

Can anyone confirm that there's a problem with NVIDIA drivers and COH? If so is there any hope? I've been playing for nearly 8 years and don't want to give up on COH.

If you're crashing, the problem COULD be the drivers. Or it could be something else. The fact that others can game stably on the various releases of nVidia drivers points to something else.

When you say "upgraded OS". Did you actually "upgrade" or did you install clean? That can make a difference.

What do you mean "optimized memory"?
Just an FYI, various "memory optimizers" and registry cleaners can have detrimental effects on your system if you don't know what you're "cleaning".

Can you give us a CoH Helper again please? Not DXDiag, CoH Helper.

Also, dxdiag? Non-free? Huh? dxdiag is part of the Windows system load from pretty much XP on. All you need to do is go to a run prompt and type in dxdiag.

Get the CoH Helper and HJT logs out here and we can figure out if there's a software issue or if you have a piece of hardware misbehaving.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Hyperstrike,

Thanks for the tips!

I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 when I did the reformat and clean installed everything. I use a memory optimizer called Advanced System Optimizer (made by the same folks that made AVG). I am also now running AVG instead of Verizon Security Suite which uses McAffee.

Here are the logs:

Note: What on earth is Babylon doing there? I deleted that after the dxdiag download I tried earlier automatically attached it even after I declined. It also automatically attached Google Toolbar after I declined it, but that seems to have come off when I removed it.

You've already spotted the first thing I saw - Babylon
Not sure what that Giant Savings dll is but it looks like more adware.

The Google toolbar is at least reasonably well behaved and some people find it useful. I wouldn't consider that a problem per se.

I'd recommend turning Ambient Occlusion completely OFF.

That Babylon toolbar can be a bugger to remove at times. I generally go into the browser and disable the Add-On's there and then remove it from Programs and Features.

That generally seems to get rid of it easily.

And I hate that it installs even if you tell it not to.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

With that ancient dual core and 'basic' video card it's best to not use such high settings for regular game play without expecting low frame rates, to say the least. Some of the ones you have selected require a good deal of "power" to run. Perhaps your heating up your components and they lack efficient cooling.
As far as requiring a cold reboot that would throw me for a loop too. I'd surely start with monitoring temperatures at idle states and full load. Each component has a max. temperature for full load etc. I'd also be sure that my Power Supply is capable of running each component efficiently.

Oh! One great program that has a free version that I've come to find perfect is Superantispyware. Very funny name to me but does a great job for even some of the more persistent forms of adware that I've come across.

Don't be a mindless farm toon, we may need you on a non-soft SF someday. =)

If another power supply is available to you try that. Seems a dying powersupply is often related to the hard crash issue. Cant hurt to try.

I think you should also try and run this.

http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor

It's a 10-20 minute app that will determine your computers settings and will give ncsoft tech's the info they need to assist you. And I think you should send in a petition if you haven't already.

I fully realize that when coh came out, the system you have now would have been uber. However, CoH has upped the ante. You may want to consider the notion of upgrading your hardware. Not cheap, but certainly affordable if you plan for it, making a wish list on newegg or tiger direct and buying a component as you can afford it.
(and yes, I certainly don't think any of us should need to do that if we meet minimum specs - but once you do, it's like a whole new game. )

If you had issues before AND after the OS upgrade which was a clean install, then its looking more like a hardware issue.

The GT240 is a very cheap basic card often not made with quality components (they have to make their profit margins!) Life expectancy of such a card is 2-3 months past the 1 year warranty (yes, I am joking)

Well, probably longer, but expect it to be good for about 2 years. If you have a friend who can spare a video card for testing, that would be the best way to confirm the issue.

Thank you, everyone, for the suggestions and I will try them. I'll run the app and submit a petition asking for help. Before the new OS I was running on minimum settings. I can try that again. I'll also take my comp to my brother in July when I visit for a thorough cleaning and for him to test it.

A new computer is out of the question for now, there have just been too many unexpected, large expenditures in the last year (think: hurricane damage last summer, storm damage this winter) and I won't dip into our emergency buffer for luxuries. I might be able to do in the future. A new video card if this one is dying would be more affordable and is something I could discuss with my husband.

I spoke with my husband about it, then with my brother who built this computer. I'll be getting a new video card and larger case to accomodate it. Now it's just deciding which will fit the budget ($500 total for any parts and case) and work with my existing hardware.
