Dan Harmon fired from Community

Sad face.

For fans of this show who like it's outrageous and ridiculous style, this is pretty bad news. I'm not sure how it will keep it all together going forward, since it seemed like the man was instrumental in forming it's zany vision.

Weird decision. Even cancelling it would have been preferable. I'm sure the new direction will make it a standard sitcom (like all those NBC made to fill in 8:30 between Friends and Seinfeld years ago), which is cruel and unusual punishment for the show. Even particular episodes I may not have been as fond of, I at least respected for daring to be different.

makes no sense to me.

the show's floundering, so just cancel it.

I don't see how firing the creator so you can turn it into some other, different, hopefully more popular show is a better idea than just canceling it and running an actual other (hopefully more popular) show.

It's not like every square inch of Hollywood is carpeted with desperate creatives pimping ideas for teevee shows, or anything....

They'd already signed the death warrant for the show, ordering only 13 episodes for next season, then scheduling it for Fridays alongside Whitney, which is about as bad of a fit as there is.

#84episodesanddone is a more realistic tag at this point.

On a personal note, the last several episodes leading up to the finale were not so great this season. Themed episodes worked for Christmas specials, but too many in a row at the end of the season for no good reason was jarring.

They have to pay off the debt/favor to the new people taking over now letting them get some paychecks in before all the wheels fall off. Pretty much SOP for Hollywood.

To be honest, it's better that it ends now, it would be straining credibility for most of the characters to remain in community college beyond 4 years (Pierce being the exception since he's been at Greendale for what, a decade now?).

The last 3 episodes that they burned off last week were amazing, despite the lack of much closure that almost would have been the perfect ending.

Dan Harmon's account of events

I have a feeling I'm not going to enjoy Season 4. The end of the latest season was so perfect I may just stop there.

Standard Hollywood operating procedure. Several showrunners have described the sweet spot between "cult success" and "breakout hit" where you're popular enough not to be in danger of cancellation, but just unpopular enough that leechxecutives aren't trying to be a part of your process.

- if the ratings are too low, they want to kill you off and replace you with an idea they've sponsored or "attached" themselves to.

- if the ratings are too high, they want attach themselves to the show - sometimes even replace you with their own minions - and claim credit for all the success of the previous X number of seasons, grab a pay rise and hop to another job.

Top tip: you ever hear leechxecutives utter the phrase "add value", knifeproof the back of your chair and get the set commissary to stock up on canned food and shotguns.

Is it time for the dance of joy yet?

Worked in Brit TV and news for a long time doing something quite geeky, but with lots of contacts and clocking up lots of favours elsewhere: had a very brief crack at Hollyweird 2010-2011, and ran into a leechxecutive. Now back home and - per my LinkedIn - "looking for new challenges"

The real problem with leechxecutives, btw, is when they start to believe their own hype - when they think actually have talent and know how to do stuff like, say, produce. People like them can gobble up vast tranches of investor cash, drive talent insane and sink entire franchises and studios. Which is why it's vitally important to research who you're dealing with first. Or just shoot any producer who you don't recognise on sight.

Yeah, I figured you had actual contact with them since you were so familiar with their MO.

Having worked in corporate and entertainment I can tell you corporate execs are very very much the same soul less bastards.

Translation: All the time. That's why they're leechxecutives and not actually out doing something legitimate.

I'm sad. I will miss Community.

That said, it's the kind of show that I'd hoped wouldn't be continued endlessly. More shows need a planned beginning and end before they launch.
