EA Slotting

I asked this on the Brute forums but the response was....less than enlightening.

So I come to you my fellow Victorians. How the heck do you slot Energy Aura for brutes?

Standard slotting for everything is Rule of 3. If you want the most efficient benefit put 3 into it.

If a defense shield has +def than put 3 defense enhancers in there.
If it is +def and +dmg res. put 3 of each in that power.
If you need an End Reducer in it, usually 1 is good enough.

I would have to check my EA toon for exact slotting tips! Can't do now at work!

Are you talking about what IO sets to use for the most effective set bonuses? With set bonuses your major goal should be to get at least 45% defense to smash/lethal and energy. And with the incarnate content in mind, you'll want to get even higher than that.

I recently leveled up a Staff/EA brute and he has been great overall on incarnate trials and did pretty well on the way up to 50 as well.

The Brute ATO set is your friend. 3 pieces gets you a smash/lethal defense bonus, so it's best to split the set into two powers (3 and 3) so you get double that set bonus. And you can slot them at level 10!

Also, adding Combat Jumping, Maneuvers and Weave help greatly on EA (get all 3 if you can) because their +def to all stacks with your defense shields. The same goes for the Steadfast +def unique (and the Gladiator's Armor +def, but it is pricey). Put the unique(s) in one of your resistance auto powers, or in tough if you have it.

With those defense powers plus the steadfast and gladiator's armor my Staff/EA is running in the 50's for smash/lethal/energy. I don't have the build that my better half put together in front of me, but I believe he's also in the 40's for fire/cold/neg energy defense, and has a minimum of around 22% defense to everything including Psi and the positions.

Note that given all the toggles you're going to have - especially if you pick up Maneuvers and Weave, you're going to want an Alpha that gives you some endurance or recovery bonus. I'm pretty sure I went with Agility (Core Paragon) which gives you +defense and +recovery.

What MP said, but I'd add it depends on your primary slotting almost as much as slotting out EA to help boost up those Def (Smash/lethal mostly) numbers. Or if your primary has a +Def (I think you'll only find melee/lethal here) ability as well (yay staff/EA).

I labored with EM/EA when EA first came out and it's been vastly overhauled since then and OMGlaughably easy to soft cap those numbers now.

I've already forgotten about most of you

Short Version:
Slot for recharge- for Energize and Energy Drain
Take Maneuvers
Take Weave
Slot Glad Armor +3%
Slot Steadfast +3%
Take Agility Core Paragon

Long Version:

The first thing to consider is that Energy Aura is a typed defensive set with some 'ok' resists.

From the Resist stand point-

You have pretty minor resists-Dampening Field, Energy Protection and Tough fully slotted (equivalent to 3 lvl 50 resist IOs).

S/l- will be around 32.5%
Energy- 26.7%
Negative- 14.9%
Fire/Cold- 0%
Toxic- 14.9%
Psionic- 0%

From the defensive point of view:
Kinetic Shield protects you against- Smash/Lethal and Energy
Power Shield is your -Fire/Cold, Energy and Negative (Negative isn't as strong as the other 3)
Energy Cloak- Gives you some pretty decent Defense to all.

If you were to enhance these three powers to about ~59% (about what 3 generic lvl 50 IOs would give) you would end up with:

22.2% Def to smash/lethal
27.7% Energy
19.2% Negative
25.2% Fire/Cold
5.9% Psionic

If you were to then stack on: Maneuvers, Weave, Steadfast +3% def, Glad Armor +3% def and Agility Core Paragon-

44.9% Smash/Lethal
52.1% Energy
41% Negative
48.8% Fire/Cold
22.9% Psionic

So you can see that even before you start looking to build more typed defense through set bonuses you are capped to essentially 5 of the 7 damage types.

You also will pick up some minor +def from using Energy Drain

It has a fairly quick recharge and even with just some quick slotting you will be able to get its effects to be perma, meaning when in battle you will always have *some* additional def from this power if you spam it whenever its up.

Another way to stack a little more def (but not much) is if you use Fly or super jump to toggle on CJ or Hover when you are in battle then back to SJ, Fly to travel. I actually set up a macro button to toggle between the two powers.

You do have a really nice heal in Energize. At base it gives you a 25% heal plus some nice regen. It also have that really great end reduction effect which helps with what used to be a very end heavy power set.

With some recharge intensive focus you can get energize to be perma as well, which really is great for long drawn out fights or being able to stand in the middle of a huge mob and being able to just keep smashing.

Overload your T9 can be useful or a throw away power. It give +def(all-psi) even though for the most part you are already soft capped to those. It does give a nice +HP which will add a lot to your survivability. If I were to take Overload I would consider getting burnout so you can stack Overload twice and get close to 6 minutes of god-mode before you crash.

The major downside to Energy Aura (in my opinion) is that the taunt aura is your mez protection toggle. So if you want to stealth a map and not aggro npc (who may stack up in doorways, causing your slower team mates to complain) then you have to de-toggle your mez protection. The only issue with that is if your stealth breaks (red crystal) you can be mezzed then be in for a bit of trouble.

I love my Titan/Energy Aura and its pretty awesome being able to run a titan weapon with that much defense non-stop with little to no end issues.

@ Madam P. I think I understand most of that but I'm not sure what the level at the end of each line meens. Is that the level of the IO or the level you take the slot? Also.. six slotted taunt? Really?

1. Don't call me that please.
2. Those are the enhancement levels, you don't have to use 50s. I just did for ease of making the build and not changing the levels. You can usually do 30+ and still get good values. Especially if you use enhancement boosters. I used some in this build, but you might need to open in Mids to see them.
3. Yes 6 slotted taunt (almost) always! It has a huge s/l and f/c def bonuses and 7.5% recharge. You can't really get better bonuses for cheaper in ANY set.
4. You didn't mention this, but I will address it- he specifically asked for the Soul Mastery Patron pool, that's why it is in there. You could also go with anything else that fit your theme or just take tactics or something.

If you have other questions send a tell, I am happy to talk them over with you. I would highly suggest looking at the build in Mids so that you can see the def/res/acc/hp values.

Gah, was going to answer that question but MP got in there since I opened the thread.

Slotting taunt is nice and you can get some nice bonuses in there, but you might have better options somewhere else. I agree with MP that you can get some nice bonuses there, but I don't much see the need to slot the power itself so much. Even a slot or two can give you plenty of improvement to range and duration (the main things you want in PvE, since you're bound to get a decent chunk of global recharge from elsewhere, particularly with EA).

Just for my two cents/approach, my StJ/EA Brute prioritized getting his defenses to 45% or as close as possible, +recharge, +HP, and +Regen. Works pretty well for me: he's soloed along fine through pre-50 and now DA content. I know his S/L defense is around 48%, though his dark is probably around 43% (Energy is really easy to get over the cap, but Dark lags behind it a lot). I'd post my build, but alas, the wonderful tech department at my university decided we'd all be better off not being able to install programs on our computers, so using Mid's in its current "need to run as an administrator" mode means I can only use it on my gaming computer, which I'm not often at. I'll try to do it when I'm on it again tomorrow.

So I now have a better under standing of what's involved it raises some more questions.

Primarily... how the heck do you AFFORD all those purples? I'm a casual player. Some of those things I couldn't get in a year let alone multiples of them! I've been popping windfall and running I trials and ITF and still lagging behind. What's the best way, with out being too grindy, to make the big bucks need to even begin thinking about MP's build? Or is grinding the only answer?

Is there a perhaps less costly route? I doubt it as EA, based on this info, is basically crippled in its ability to do anything unless you do min/max.

Am I being to negative?

The purples add nothing to the defense portion of the build. They are a nice toy if you have them and if you don't there are definitely cheaper options! You could do a set of Posi Blast for Rags and a set of crushing impact for the Hecas. If you have a specific price point in mind, just let me know, I can revamp a build for you with cost in mind.

To answer your question- grinding is probably the slowest way to make inf in game. Playing the market for a few minutes each day is the fastest. As a simple exercise... I would tell you to find a moderately priced set that you like... let's just say Posi blast. Bid for a reasonable but low bid on each recipe (level 50), but don't just bid on 1, bid for 10. When they fill, craft them. Save 3 and sell 7. You'll pay for the three you keep and have a tidy profit. This is how you start building up a stock of enhancements of sets you are likely to use often (crushing impact, posis, maybe makos, kinetic combats (more spendy), thunderstrikes, doctored wounds, etc.). When you have a stock pile created it makes your future builds a lot less costly since you can just go steal from your base.

Additionally, you could join in for the events that are run on the server and win some prizes! There are usually 3-6 small prizes given out weekly at Hami and there will be well over 5 billion given out at a Victorious Spring Fling (tonight!).

I've got an energy aura brute that I've been blasting through iTrials and the DA content with over on the Justice Server. With energy drain used at the beginning of mobs, his defenses are well over the incarnate cap. In addition, he is perma-hastened.

Incarnate wise, I went with Spiritual for the Alpha slot to get that extra +recharge and a little heal help on Siphon Life and Energize. For Interface he has Reactive for that extra damage. He also has perma-Barrier (which is honestly overkill with his great defensive numbers). He boasts Pyronic Judgement to add more AOE damage to go along with Soul Drain, Dark Consumption, and Dark Obliteration. He's no /Fire in terms of AOE damage, but he does VERY well in that department.

I, much like someone above, couldn't handle the thought of six slotting taunt even though the bonuses are nice. The thing I like most about this build is that you'll see that there are absolutely NO purple sets. He's been a tremendous farmer and thus has been able to save up many of them, but I'd rather save those purples for other toons that maybe need it. The most expensive parts of this build were the Eradications and the Kinetic Combats. (Hero Merits and Reward Merits helped purchased many of them).

Here's his build as it stands right now:
