Very Poor Performance

Hi, I normally only visit this board to read threads, but I've finally had enough of wondering what's wrong with my computer.

When I'm playing on Recommended, I often have a relatively smooth experience as long as I'm in Atlas, soloing, or on a small team, yet even then the game is never totally smooth. That changes as soon as I do a large trial or task force. I've been doing BaF a few times lately, and every time I have had to reduce my graphics down to Minimum just to play it. Even so, it still looks like a slideshow, with my framerate in the 2-5 range.

Now, I know my computer isn't a powerhouse, but it's certainly not the slowest and most outdated machine either. I've previously had no problem running Crysis on High, GTA IV on Medium, The Sims 3, Kingdoms of Amalur, Fable 3 (on Low). So I know I am capable of playing modern games on this system.

I'm really not sure what it could be. I've tested my PC on the "Can You Run It" website and it tells me that I have passed 100%, and can play CoH maxed out. Now, I'm not the most technologically advanced guy in the world, so I'm not entirely sure what is required in my thread for somebody to pinpoint the problem. I'll post my system specs here and if any more information is needed, please explain how to do so and I will post that, too.

First things first, we'll need a CoHhelper report, too, and a HiJackThis report. DXDIAG doesn't really tell enough of the story.

The standard answer here when someone says "My machine plays (fill in newer game here) just fine, why is CoX so flippin' slow?!?!" is that CoX has always taxed hardware more than any other game I'm aware of, even many newer, sexier games. I'll let the forum regulars comment upon your hardware setup and how capable it should be, although just at a glance it looks like it *should* do fine.

Because those are likely using the less hardware tasking DirectX tech, not the OpenGL that CoX uses. CoX can task the crap out of a system. nVidia chips need good cooling btw, so I'd check your temps using Speedfan. I have an older GPU (7600) and see the same kind of stuff you're seeing. When I toggle to my temp meters I'll see them in the 60C-70C+ range. Also, you're pushing the x86 memory barrier a tad so there's a chance that could be related.

So I've installed a GPU temperature monitoring program. I checked my GPU's temperature 10 minutes after playing CoH and it tells me that the GPU Core is 66C and the GPU is 48C. I'm assuming that's higher than it should be. Does this mean the problem could be fan-related?

EDIT: After a few minutes of research I've discovered that 50-60C is about right for an idle NVidia card. I'm still dumbfounded. I ran a few more trials today and my framerate seems to be dropping by the day. I was on 2FPS in BAF earlier. It was literally like watching someone's slideshow presentation of CoH. This was on Minimum settings.

Pentium D is a pretty old CPU. 7 years is a long time in the computer world. The Core 2 Duo was a huge leap in performance over the P4 and D CPUs.

That said, you probably need to give us and people trying to help you more info about your connection speeds etc.

Do you have a compaison of gameplay difference with a PC with more modern hardware?

You have quite a few programs running that you might can remove from startup and free up some process memory, and AVGIDSAgent.exe has caused some high cpu usage for some people and might be affecting your system.

I think AVG has gotten a little bloated in the last couple years and some other antivirus might be a better choice if your inclined to change. For free, Avast isn't bad and actually Microsoft Security product isn't to bad either, in regards to protection and cpu cycles.

Try shutting down some processes and see it that helps. The GPU your running is going to be most of your bottleneck, for smooth frame rates it seems.

OK. Your CoH Helper report is cut off and doesn't give any of the ingame settings.

With Windows XP this is usually caused by something (firewall, network security package, malware, etc.) blocking access to the registry.

The "Can Your Run It" site and sites similar to that one suck donkey ... well, I can't say that here ... when it comes to accurate reporting.

Make sure Ambient Occlusion and Advanced Occlusion are turned off completely in your graphics options for the game. I'd recommend running nothing on Ultra Mode with that card and most settings at Low, Medium or OFF for testing and possibly for playing for a while.

As TerraShock said there are several programs running at Startup that can likely be removed and, sadly, AVG has joined the bloatware camp. It used to be a nice lean antivirus utility but it has grown into a bloated monstrosity.

I've had good success with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's lightweight, doesn't take up large amounts of memory, and has caught several problems at home and at work.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Thanks for the advice. I've uninstalled all traces of AVG and replaced it with Avast. I've also removed several small programs that were simply cluttering up my hard drive. I'll go through my processes and end any that aren't necessary then load up CoH to see if there are any changes.

EDIT: Just finished another BAF trial. Last night my framerate was about 2-3FPS, and it's now 5FPS, so there's a very small increase in performance. I'm not sure what else can be done other than buying new parts/a new computer.

Looks like your on the latest driver, and latest isn't always best. Have you tried some older drivers? I think the one your using had some issues for some people.

I use guru3d forums to search out driver issues, so you might want to start there. I think the 275.33 drivers were pretty good, and for a newer one, I'm currently on the 295.73 drivers for my GTX 460 in my system with no issues. Do clean installs using a driver cleaner for best results.

Also you might want to use the nvidia control panel to change the "global settings" to prefer maximum performance and see if that helps any.

Once again, solid advice. I checked my NVidia control panel settings and noticed that the graphics were set to "Quality". I changed that to "Performance" straight away and I'm already getting around 10FPS in Atlas Park on Recommended. I know that's not ideal, but it's noticeably better than it was. I'll look into rolling the driver back later on.

Thanks.

You should really change off "Recommended" and switch it to Advanced so you can manually adjust the graphics. "Recommended" doesn't automatically adjust the game to work well with your system, it's just a fairly arbitrary combination of settings.

I've tweaked the advanced settings and pulled them all down to the bare minimum to see if it made a difference. It wasn't nearly as smooth as it should have been, worryingly. I'm currently downloading a driver that is supposed to increase performance for the GeForce 8 series of cards through the above mentioned website. Hopefully that will do something!

This torrent program may be causing some slowdowns? BEARSH~1\MediaBar\Datamngr\DATAMN~1.EX E

BearShare has been an issue with other peoples systems, and I'd sure be careful of adware etc, it might be loading. Run Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes, and Combofix to check for adware that it may have loaded.

http://www.malwarebytes.org http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html and, http://www.combofix.org/

These programs don't need to be running all the time. Install and update them, then use them one at a time to scan your system. Repeat ever so often.

BearShare? That's very odd, I installed it about two years ago, tried it once, then uninstalled it on the same day. Why is it still showing up? There's nothing in the Add/Remove section of the Control Panel. I've run Spybot recently and everything was clean. I also run CCleaner regularly, and FileShredder just to keep my hard drive clutter-free.

Run malwarebytes as well, not all adware is found by all programs. Make sure you update the program before you run it.

I guess this program can be hard to remove from other things I've read, with varying approaches to remove it, but some people have had success with using Revo uninstaller. http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_..._download.html
