Expired email items
They'll probably be deleted. I think the safest bet would be to have a character store them in the enhancement tray.
I assume you claimed them from the Character Item section and then e-mailed them through regular in-game mail?
Because I know regular in-game mail expires, I don't think Character/Account items do.
Not 100% sure there, I'm sure someone else will chime in.

I agree with Alpha in that I think your best option (if you've already claimed the items then re-emailed them) would be to just claim them and put them in the enhancement tray of one of your characters.

I believe the rule of thumb is to never leave anything in in-game email that you're not willing to lose.
A couple of times in the past when the email server crashed and emails were wiped (for some people), you were able to petition for a GM to recover your stuff. However, the GMs knew when those occured (date and time) to search their back ups. They still asked for exactly what was lost (I guess so they don't dup things for just anyone who complains).
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
I purchased a set of Hecatomb IOs from the Paragon Market a week and a half ago and put them in my global email. I was going to put them on a character once he reached level 50 but now for unforeseen reasons I won't be able to log into CoH for quite a while (longer than the 50 days left on the mail). My account is still active and being paid for (VIP) while I'm gone, but I want to know what will happen to these items once the email expires. I assume that they'll just be deleted, but will there be any way for me to recover them upon returning?

To answer the question, barring some crash of the email system when the 50 days expire the email will be returned to sender, and by sender I mean the character that sent the email. Yes I know you sent it to your global name and all the characters are you but when you log back in you will have to log onto the character that sent it.
Now that said I don’t know what will happen to the email if 50 days pass and it gets sent back and then another 50 days pass, not sure if a return to sender email can expire.
(I think I miss read your question, I thought you claimed the store sent email and then sent them to another character on your global account, in which case the above is true, if you still have the store sent email then your golden untill the servers go black)

As someone has already said.
- Stuff bought in the store and claimed through the e-mail interface are *not* e-mails.
- They have no expiration date and persist in that screen until claimed. If you bought something today, and didn't log back in for 5 years, assuming the game is still going at that time, you could still claim the stuff then.
But your stuff will still be there for you when you get back.

If that's the case, and there's someone you trust, you can let them log into your account and remove them from the email into a character's tray for you. If there isn't, your best bet will be to contact support once you get back - I've heard of them restoring expired email items before, hopefully they'd be able to help in this case. In order to help THEM out as much as possible, please record the date and time (or as close as you can remember) to the time they are slated to expire. They have to verify the loss of the item before they can restore it, and they won't be able to if they have to dig through weeks or months worth of logs.
