Points Question...Birthday is coming!

Hey all...

Quick and probably simple question here. I've been back from a three year break from the game for about 2 months and LOVING it. Just have a quick question regarding the points you can purchase to buy things in the Paragon Market. I've purchased some points for various things, (mainly super packs), but have always just used my credit card that is attached to the account...I thought I remembered it defaulting to that when I was checking out. My question is this: with my birthday coming, if I was to receive those credit card gift cards (like the American Express or Visa ones) as gifts for my bday, could I use those to purchase points in the market? My credit card that is attached to my account is actually a check card so it's connected to my checking account so I don't exactly have an unlimited supply of money (YET!). I just wasn't sure if, when checking out, it gives you the option to choose/use a different card than the one attached to your account.

Thanks for any insight!!!

I sounds like you have a debit card, which works for the game.
The other cards are called "prepaid cards" and they also work, but I believe you have to manually enter them on your master account page, not in game.

I've never had more than one card to use on the game though, so it may be best to contact support for a straight answer.

Those cards should work fine.

The only issue I can see is that you can only use one card for each purchase, so (for example) if you got five $10 cards, there would be no way for you to purchase the $50 bundle - your only option would be to buy ten $5 bundles, two per card, one at a time. It's possible that doing a large number of transactions like that could set off their security system, which would require you to call customer service before you could make more purchases.

Depending on what bundles you buy, you might find yourself with a few dollars on each card that can't be used, especially if you are using a non-US currency - the last time I checked, $50 US was about $52 Canadian, so there's no way for me to buy the $50 pack with a $50 prepaid credit card (or at least, one that I can get).

I wonder if you could take the prepaid cards to your bank and get the money off them into your checking account for your debit card, like "paying yourself"?
That would solve the whole issue.

No.

I don't know about other countries, but I imagine it's the same: In Canada, those cards cannot be used for cash at a bank or ATM (that would include moving the money from the card to your bank account). Any attempt to do so will be declined.

You may be able to find somewhere that is willing to add a "cash back" to your bill when using these cards, but most places don't do cash back on credit cards (and there's no difference between a prepaid credit card and a regular one to the POS terminal).

Hmmm...Yes, you can use Gift cards such as Visa Vanilla. First thing you have to do is register the card at Visa.com or wherever the card instructions direct you.

Then go to your NCSoft Billing page and change your card to "Other Card."

It will ask you to input the info on the card just as you would a reg credit card.

A thing to keep in mind is if you have only fifty dollars on the card, you will not be able to buy the fifty dollar bundle because of tax on that 50 bucks....yes, one is charged tax on Paragon points

I think, you can take your different giftcards to a store that sells giftcards and buy a new one using all your different gift cards as payment which will put all your moneys on one card and allow you to purchase a bundle...not to sure about that though...you might want to ask the store cashier about combining debit cards before you do it.

Hope I helped a bit.

Lisa.

Silly Californians... but also, check to see if you can add to the card if you get one big one - you might be able to add enough to cover the tax.

I'm pretty sure this only applies in certain states.
I don't recall being charged tax on my point purchases.

This is correct. You have to be in the same state as the seller to be charged sales tax, since sales taxes are added at the state (or provincial) level. Because of how NC Soft is set up, last I heard there's two states where they charge sales tax on purchases. I can't remember which ones - but I know neither of them is in Canada. ;P

Texas, California, and Washington I know for sure, because NCsoft has facilities in each of those. There may be more.

That is not what I meant. Of course, you can't use them as an ATM card because they are not an ATM card, but how do you think the store you use them at gets the money?
Obviously, the card works like a debit card in certain situations.

I don't see why it would not let you "pay somebody" with the card, so long as they can process it like it needs to be processed, even if that somebody is you and your checking account receiving the money.

Anyway, it was just an idea that I don't think most people have even tried. The other ideas posted by others here work well though.

The ones I'm familiar with NEVER function like debit cards - they function like credit cards, which are totally different. When a credit card is processed, it's one of two types of transactions: a purchase or a cash advance (technically, there's a third type - balance transfer - but that isn't done at the POS level). Cash advances can only be done at the bank or ATM level, and typically have a higher interest rate. Stores typically aren't supposed to do cash back on credit cards, because transactions they do are processed as purchases, not cash advances.
Prepaid credit cards are designed to automatically decline cash advance transactions, and that's how the card would be processed to "pay you into your chequing account". Doing it some other way to bypass that limitation would be credit fraud.

Again, I'm Canadian. Rules may be different in the US, but they are generally pretty close.

Hmmm...I live in California, and before my 3 year break I was always taxed on my $15.99 monthly...but, since returning, there has been no tax on my monthly subscriptions nor have I been taxed on any points I've bought. *Shrug*.

I appreciate all the tips. Bit more confusing than I hoped it would be. When you are checking out in the Paragon Store it should be as simple as inputting the numbers on on alternate card (or gift card) if you don't want to use the card attached to your account...
