Why are NPCs defining my character's age?
I'm sure it's been said, but me, I call almost everyone in game that I come across "Kiddo". It has nothing to do with age, but more because that's the role that I play. An old curmudgeon. If I'm 45 and you're 50, I'm still gonna call you kiddo.
Not because of who you are, but because of who I am.

No, it makes sense for her to call you "rookie". "Kiddo" carries a connotation of age.

It doesn't make the writers wrong. It adds to her personality.
The fact that she refers to you that way, just as she would a three-headed half-motorcycle demicanadian whiskey hunter from Mars, means nothing!
That's just her way of saying "hey you" which, I might add, is the most offensive thing you can possibly say to a whiskey hunter.
you could have it all

I will make you <3
I have a friend that loves to use the word kiddo whenever she's talking down to someone. She knows not to use it with me though.
I put it up there with guys that call you "Boss" or "Chief" in an eye rolling manner.

I dont see any rp problem with this at all, i known people in real life who can't remember anybodys names / ages at all. One guy down my local pub calls every body young man / woman and hes at lest 10 years younger than me, he just to damn lazy to remember peoples age or name , another guy i used to work with 20 years ago just called everybody "Will" So just go with the senile/nuts NPC's
There are only three alternatives. It thinks were either a threat, food, or a mate. Its gonna either kill us, eat us, or hump us.
Question to the OP. Let's say Twinshot were an Incarnate and several thousand years old. Could she call you "kiddo" then? And would the game have any obligation to inform you of that fact right out of the tutorial?
There are several characters in CoH who are significantly older than they appear: Lady Grey, Dark Watcher, Lord Recluse, Hero One. You seem to have made the same assumption that you ascribe to the game. Twinshot looks younger. Her Praetorian counterpart certainly looks like a kid too. But like we eventually find out with Calvin Scott, Tyrant, and others, there may be more under the surface. EDIT: I have this habit of calling small children 'sir' and 'ma'am' or using Mr. or Ms. and their last name. Many kids get a kick out of an adult addressing them this way and I can often get a giggle. Am I defining their age? It's not like Twinshot said you were 36 years old. She just used a term of endearment. Don't take it personally. She's kind of a PITA. |

"Commonly applied" is an oxymoron here. It might be commonly used in that way where you are, but not where other posters are. Among people I interact with, whether "kiddo" is a reference to age is highly context sensitive - used in contexts where it is clearly not a reference to age, it is either a diminutive or a reference to someone who is less senior or less experienced.
