Your characters will be there, however, depending on your veteran status and purchased slots, you may not be able to access them without subscribing or buying more slots. Premium players (aka former subscribers in this case) are limited on the number of characters they can have active. Your characters will not ever be deleted, although depending on how long ago you left and what level your characters were, the names may have been released. I'll let someone else give the details on numbers of characters and name release info.

Your published missions should still be around. There have been a number of changes to how AE missions work since it came out, so they may not reward the same way you remember.

Any unpublished ones were saved locally to your own hard drive, so you're the only one who can answer for those. However....

By 'bought AE', I assume you mean you bought the Architect Edition of CoH.

Unfortunately, the Architect Edition was a release commemorating AE, and was not required to use AE. Under CoH:Freedom, you must have a certain level of Paragon Rewards (vet rewards) to use AE as a Premium player.
Tier 2 (which as a former subscriber is the minimum you will have) allows you to play any AE arc without reward.
Tier 4 (with 8 reward tokens) allows you to play AE arcs with rewards.
Tier 6 (20 tokens) is required to create/test/publish in AE.

If you subscribe, there are no limits on AE.

For more information on the Paragon Rewards program, see here: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Paragon_Rewards_Program

One final note: it is best practice on these forums to edit your own post if you have more to add, rather than posting directly after yourself.

Champion 50s (blueside): Marc Bridge, Nicole Bridge, Fred Blaze, Colleen Storms, Sun's Chariot, Moon's Huntress, Point of Pride
Guardian 50s (redside): Connie Mand

If the OP is referring to the AE edition, the only thing special about that edition was that the people buying it got a coupon for a free booster pack (Magic or Cyborg). All subscribers had and still have unrestricted access to the AE regardless of whether or not they bought the AE edition.

My understanding is that you choose which slots you want to unlock which includes unlocking empty slots instead of ones with characters in them. So if you only had controllers you could skip unlocking them and just click on some blank slots below them.

Of course, I've not played any non-VIP accounts, so I might be a bit off on the particulars.

Depending on your Reward level, you may have Controllers unlocked already. Opening Controllers and MM's through the Paragon Rewards system requires filling Tier 5 (13 Reward Tokens owned). The Paragon Rewards system replaces the old Veteran Rewards system. You can read more about the Paragon Rewards system at ParagonWiki.

You can choose whichever characters to unlock that you want, but you can only play them if you have access to that AT. For example, MM's and Controllers require either a purchased license from the Paragon Market or having filled Tier 5 on the Paragon Rewards shrub. Hero and Villain Epic AT's are supposed to be locked behind the VIP level (subscribers) but there are reports of a bug that allowed some players to be able to access their existing Epic AT's on Premium Accounts. There is no Reward Tier unlock for Epic AT's although you can purchase a license from the Paragon Market. You can read about what is available in the Paragon Market at ParagonWiki.

Inventions are locked behind Tier 7 (27 Reward Tokens) of the Paragon Rewards system or a monthly license fee.

You can purchase a license for Controllers in the Paragon Market to allow you to use those characters.

You can also purchase additional character slots at the Paragon Market to allow you to create or play more characters.

And of course, becoming VIP (subscribing) gets you access to almost everything in the game for no additional fee as well as many more character slots. Some of the powersets and such still require a purchase by VIP's to use, but VIP's get 400 Paragon Points each month (550 if Tier 8 (34 Tokens) or 9) as part of the subscription.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Just for clarification.

1. If a player only has 12 slots on a server, and all 12 slots have characters on them then the player won't have any empty slots to unlock.

2. If a character uses his global unlocks to unlock a character that is in a restricted AT like MM or Controller, he will have to purchase an additional unlock for MM's or Controllers unless he has enough Vet/Paragon Rewards earned to unlock the AT's.

3. I believe cnce the player uses his global unlocks they are permanently assigned to that server and cannot be reassigned by going VIP and dropping back to Premium.

I can verify this with one caveat - your global slots are now server slots, but your characters are all locked and you can choose which ones you unlock.

So say you come back to the game and are Premium and look at your character list: You have Vanessa, Albert, Monkeyboy, and Elroy. You can only unlock two of those characters with your global slots. You unlock Vanessa and Albert. You decide that the Incarnate system is something you really want to try out, so you go VIP for a month to try it out. While you are VIP you can also play Monkeyboy and Elroy and you decide that you like them better than Vanessa and Albert. Unfortunately, money's tight, and you let your VIP subscription lapse for another month. When you log in after your VIP subscription lapses you have 0 Global slots but 2 Server Slots to assign. All of your characters are locked once again and you decide to unlock Elroy & Monkeyboy. You stay a Premium customer for the next month, and your server slots do not lock again or give you a chance to reassign them, you've chosen Elroy & Monkeyboy so unless you go VIP again or purchase more character slots those are the two characters you may play (unless you delete one and use the slot to make a new toon).
