Okay, I downloaded the drivers from that link (12.2), the computer did it's automatic restart, I went to Device Manager-->display adapters-->AMD Radeon HD 7450-->properties-->driver to see if it said 12.2, but...

WTH?

I'm seriously reaching the limit of my patience, here. I'm seriously considering just saying "to hell with it" and getting a better graphics card.

First, save the 12.2 driver to your computer, don't open it immediately.

Second, click that uninstall button there and uninstall the driver.

Third after you are sure the driver is uninstalled, manually run the 12.2 program you saved to update to that driver.

That should work.

I was checking the specs for my graphics card on the AMD website and I noticed something interesting: it said that a 400W power supply is recommended. I don't know if this could be related to the problem I'm having, but I'm wondering what (if anything) it means in terms of getting a new graphics card.

Its more CYA on their part. There is no way HP engineering would allow it go out without enough juice.

Its a re-badged 6450 it will run just fine on 300W. Let get your drivers updated first.

Okay, serious WTF moment...

I clicked the uninstall button, like you asked (omg, everything's huge and pixellated), and then installed the 12.2

I checked device manager, like before and it says EXACTLY THE SAME THING!!!!

See?!

What is going on here?!

Yep, I use said widgets on all my windows 7 installs as you can get current numbers as they happen.

Time to contact your computer manufacturer's(or the place you bought it through) support and get them working on helping you update the driver.

It seems you have a serious issue with that which we are not equipped to handle.

At this point, I'm probably just going to get a better graphics card, since this one isn't that good anyway, apparently.

Don't spend money if you don't need to.

Your graphics card can obviously handle the settings it was at since it wasn't overheating.
You just have a driver updating issue, and like that old driver can't do things a newer one can.

Like I said, contact your computer's support line and get them to help you. That is what they are there for.

If you get another ATI card, you may still be stuck with the non-upgrading driver problem.

There's a program called Driver Sweeper (free) that gets rid of remnants of older, uninstalled ATI driver installations prior to installing new drivers. I was crashing quite a bit from ATI drivers version 11.2 to 11.9 (Win7 64bit ATI HD 5850). It's gotten fairly stable since 12.1 and I'm running 12.2 without a problem so far.

Anyway, Driver Sweeper is located here:

http://www.phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html

I use it after uninstalling the old drivers and before installing the new ones. You have to boot into safe mode to use it. I haven't had any problems using it but as with anything, you'll find people who have had more catastrophic experiences with it. I agree with T that you should pursue customer support before trying this program since it's a new computer.

If you get to the end of your rope, this will give you just a bit more to ... nevermind.

I would actually uninstall all of ATI software from Control Panel > Programs and Features. Then reboot, then install 12.2

I got fed up. I tried various methods for installing the new drivers, and they didn't work, so I got a better power supply and a GeForce 560 graphics card.

It still crashes.

I don't think the graphics card is the problem.

I've done a bit more testing on the nature of the crash; it always crashes some time during the second mission since I logged in to that character. Logging out to character screen or login screen and then logging back in to the same character doesn't help. Having the second mission in a different zone from the first doesn't help. If I only do one mission, I can stay on indefinitely without crash as far as I can tell (I spent a while editing costumes, crafting IOs, and selling/buying on the market without problems, until I tried a second mission, which caused a crash). I'm going to see if switching off between two characters (doing one mission with one, switching to another, then switching back) will prevent the crash, but I'm not too hopeful. This whole thing is pretty crazy. Is anyone else having this problem?

You may be having "environmental" issues in that install (as in something in Windows is broke).

Especially if those AMD/ATI drivers were "sticking" in the system registry.
If you have already bought an nVidia card, take the above advice and grab yourself a driver cleaner program and purge any ATI graphics stuff from your system.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I'm sure it slipped your mind, but doing so in Windows Safe Mode is a good start for cleaning things out with the least amount of trouble.

So I mentioned the problem I was having in the Known Issues thread, and it turns out that it wasn't even my computer's fault. It's a problem with the team status update issue. T_Immortalus told me to /leaveteam and it works, so thank you! And thanks to everyone for helping out.

For once, it's not my fault . Technical ineptitude FTL.

They don't acknowledge it as a known issue yet though.
You would be best reporting the bug and telling them that /leaveteam worked as a solution.

Maybe they will start acknowledging the broken team status system then.

Okay, I apparently didn't test this enough, because I'm still getting crashes. But only on characters I made on my old computer before I22. I haven't tried making a new character on my old computer and seeing if it works on my new one, or if characters made on my new computer will work on my old one. I'm going to try this tomorrow. I wonder if it has something to do with going from Windows 7 32-bit on my old computer to 7 64-bit on my new one, although I don't know why it would.

*sigh* The plight continues.

I am gettng randomly disconnected every 20-30 minutes. Very irritating.

I only lose connection, I don't get this error. What to do?

Posted

Disconnected as in "Lost connection to mapserver" and then it kicks you out?

What mine does is the screen suddenly freezes, then an error pops up saying "City of Heroes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down". Oddly enough, the characters are still playing in between the freeze and the error message (I know this because when I log back in they have less health/are defeated if they were standing in the middle of a group of enemies).

Wish I could have solved the problem for you, but /leaveteam was just about the only idea I had that worked.

I actually have Windows 7 64bit as well. I have a rather crappy shared internet connection that tends to exacerbate any high ping issues the servers have, as well as my own end having a bottleneck, as well.
I tend to crash every time I team with anybody that has incarnate powers, at random times and usually depends on what is going on at the time(like lots of high ping, lag, makes it more common).

I just avoid teaming with incarnates, but I certainly don't crash as often as you do. I'm not sure what is different about my computer versus yours though.

Hmm, maybe you could take a picture of your "task manager"(opened by ctrl+alt+del and clicking task manager on the screen that comes up) "process" list to show what is running on your computer so that I could compare it to mine and maybe see the answer.

You maybe could also try messing with the page file, or whatever it is(I'm sorry I don't remember what exactly or how to), to set it higher so the game has more memory it can take advantage of.
There is always another command I have macroed to use occasionally(but it can cause a crash itself) and that is /unloadgfx which resets the graphics load.

Hmm, try, in your team window(while teaming and showing buffs), disabling "show buff numbers" or maybe even enable "stop sending buffs". Maybe you can change that in the options window too.
This may just be the most likely thing to work for you.
I actually have "show buff numbers" disabled, but I haven't enabled "stop sending buffs".

So you are getting this error on both machines then?

Since you tried two different video cards, the video card is not the source of the problem.

Just finished some testing: the old machine works okay; I get a little lag with it (and it can't run ultra mode at all, which is why I want to fix this so badly). Characters I made on the new machine work on the old one without causing it to crash. The new character I made on the old machine just today works on the new one. It seems to be just characters I made before I22 came out. Unfortunately, I didn't make any characters on the new machine prior to I22's release, but since the new character I made on the old machine worked just fine, I don't think the character's creation source is part of the problem.

I got the new machine just before the release of I22. As far as I can remember, it worked fine until I22 came out, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

T_Immortalus, I also tend to crash more often in places with more lag. Here's the task manager image:

Send in a support petition and see if they can do anything about it on their end. It may be corrupted data on NCsoft's part.
