For the moon, apparently if you work out the math it's actually relatively quick - about as long as it's been since the game launched, hence my 'we have a month left' comment. For satellites, though, it probably does take longer.

Sort of like how Niven's ringworld required stationkeeping thrusters to keep the star in the center. Without stabilizers a ringworld's orbit would fairly quickly shift until it brushed the star. Something Banks' Orbitals and Halo's Halos avoid by being smaller rings that orbit the star instead of being a ring around the star.

It is not really a secret and the transparency is fairly obvious, but no one mentions it out of consideration for the previously mentioned supers.
