My attempt at an Elec/Shield (Criticisms welcome)

I've had an Elec/Shield ever since Shield Defense came out, and I haven't done that much with it. I'm not super experienced with Mids, but after a lot of practice and viewing other builds on this site, I think I built something that could work.

I was aiming for hitting softcap for positional def, and I pretty much got it.
45.4 melee
44.7 ranged
44.7 aoe
I could get the ranged and aoe up to 45, but I figured the tradeoff of slots wasn't worth it.

I've heard great things about the Fire Epic. I used to and currently have Body Mastery, but after reading how lame Physical Perfection really is, I decided to try to put in Fire instead.

I skipped Phalanx Fighting b/c if I'm already at the softcap, the +Def for being in a team is pointless, and in itrials there's always plenty of buffs from your team.

From personal experience with Grant Cover it's radius is so small that people in the group rarely benefit from the bonus, plus most people aren't expecting a team buff from a scrap anyways.

I hate the crash/recharge of One With the Shield, so skipped.

For alpha I'm heavily leaning towards Musculature instead of Spiritual. An extra 3 seconds recharge on Lightning Rod/Shield Charge vs a +40-60 dmg boost seems like a clear choice to me.

Interface I'm going for the fire proc for more dmg, and Destiny I'm open to suggestions. Barrier is pointless and I rarely need to heal, so Rebirth seems skippable as well. I guess I could grab Incandescence or Clarion but their usefulness outside of itrials is next to none.

I know I have a few set bonuses that go over the rule of 5, but for those the bonuses after the repeats outweighed the wasted bonus.

I tried to go fairly cheap and completely avoid purples and PvPs. I can't afford to spend 10 bil on 1 character but I can spend a reasonable amount.

I noticed that this build will eat my end like crazy, so if you can find a way to tweak it to give me some better recovery and keep my def I'd greatly appreciate it.

Here's my build:

Stamina is woefully underslotted. You'll be gasping for endurance every minute or something, though since you don't really have a decent attack chain if at all, that might not matter too much.

Phalanx Fighting isn't just a buff for each teammate near you, it gives you 3.75% defense to melee/range/aoe as a passive power with nobody in range.

You've gone after a lot of typed defense bonuses for some reason instead of positional defense bonuses. Why?

If you plan on keeping this build, forget Musculature instead of Spiritual, you'll need Cardiac.

You've also forgotten about the Rule of Five regarding set bonuses.

-edit-

I've kept your powers for the most part, but switched Maneuvers with Phalanx Fighting - as you said, you're not interested in buffing other players, so why use a toggle when a passive power works even better for you? This build should give you a lot more endurance to play with, and makes Ring of Fire a proper part of your single target attack chain. Jacob's Ladder and Thunder Strike are slotted out for attacking with as well.

In addition, Melee/Range/AoE defenses is now 46.4%, properly softcapping you in normal content. If you don't mind using Enhancement Boosters, you could even remove a slot from Hasten.

Didn't realize that on Phalanx Fighting. Now I see why it's so great!

I've been messing around in Mids with this AT combo for 4 or 5 hours trying to figure out what would work best. I'm fairly inexperienced with set bonuses, so I did mess up a 'little'. I did fix my build quite a bit, getting rid of the bonuses over 5. I got to where I was over cap and Ring of Fire/Fire Blast were quite useful, but when comparing my fix to yours, you obviously know your sets better than me.

Also, I have no problems with enhancement boosters. Where would I move the slot? I was thinking over to Assault to reduce the end cost.

With your fixed build, would you still suggest Cardiac, or would I be fine with Musculature? Any suggestions on Destiny pick?

Thanks so much for your input and corrections. It's an amazing help for those of us (me) who are a little inexperienced with set bonuses and builds.

Id say you could probably lose spring attack and Jacobs ladder and use those powers and slots to shore up your defense and end recovery or you'll have to go in every farm or mission with a full tray of blues. I love /shield defense but it can be a little on the expensive side to get it performing well. Spring attack wont sync up with your other nukes and you'll get a third nuke with your incarnates anyways.

I agree that Spring Attack doesn't sync super well with LR/SC but it still has it's uses. Spring Attack is useful b/c your Judgement has a 1min 30sec recharge, so it's only up every 3rd set of LR/SC. Spring Attack, while not on the exact same recharge time of LR/SC, is great to get an extra burst dmg attack to speed up your farm/TF/etc. Even if it only saves 2 mins a mission, 2 mins times 30 missions is an hour of time saved.

Upon examination, I doubt I'll use Jacobs Ladder, so that could definitely go. The question is, what power would I replace it with? I already have every +Def power I can get (besides hover, which is redundant as I have Combat Jumping) and there's no other End powers available to me. Also, I'm not quite sure why I'd need to shore up my defense when my positionals are all at 46.4% The very few powers in the game without a positional tag aren't significant enough to warrant getting all the delivery types soft capped. (The only important ones where positional tags won't help are Crystal Titan and Hami, but those have insps required for them.)

Using Ideon's fixed build, my Net End Gain is 1.94/sec, not too bad considering there's 7 toggles running. If I needed to, I could alpha slot Cardiac Core Paragon. That would bring up my Net End Gain to 2.19/sec and reduce the cost of all my attacks and auto-cast powers (Active Defense and Hasten).

It's a simple mistake people forget, haha.

To easily check, on Mid's, go Window, Sets & Bonuses (or Ctrl+B) and check the Effect Breakdown. If anything breaks the rule of five, it will say something like cap, and be in red. Scrolling down will show what broke it, and then you can make adjustments to your build. In your case, it was the 9% Enhancement(Accuracy), so I fixed that on your two defense toggles.

That's probably the best place to put it. The one in Tough could be replaced by the Hamidon Enhancements Ribosome Exposure (end/res), but only if you acquire them.

I haven't played your build, so I can't be too sure, haha. The best way of checking is to build it on beta where you can buy your orange recipes easily from Astral Christy in Ouroboros using Astral merits which cost 1 inf each or something, take it to Rikti War Zone and wail on the dummies in the base for set amounts of time using different combos. If you did take Musculature, the radial side has End Mod which can help increase endurance Stamina gives you, but my maths is wonky at the moment, haha. If all else fails, go with Cardiac on the Core side.

As for Destiny, generally speaking, I go Rebirth on radial side (which adds regen on top of the heal) for melee alts, as they're usually lacking a heal of some kind.

To be fair, if you like using the attack, there's no reason to get rid of it. This was generally why I kept your build the way it was save for Maneuvers and Phalanx Fighting swapping, haha.

If you were to get rid of Jacob's Ladder, you could change the slotting in Tough to use Aegis: Res/End, Res, and Res/End/Rech so you fix up the 3.13% AoE def set bonus you lose from Scirocco's in Jacob's Ladder. I'm fairly certain Joane of Arc was thinking of your original build in regards to your positional defenses, not my fixed build, hehe. I'm not sure what you would stick in there to replace it though.

Hasten's main endurance loss (15 points) comes at the end of the duration, not from the start. As you can't stick endurance reduction SOs in Hasten, Cardiac won't work either on it. Remember, your Alpha is like sticking a SO in each power which is capable of taking it. If you pick Cardiac, only powers which can normally have a endurance reduction SO stuck in can take advantage of it.

With the coming changes to hami-o's, shield's ddr (defense debuff resistance) is going to suffer a bit. That said, depending on what you like to do with your toon, I think getting as much ddr as you can should be a priority.

/sd has 3 sources:

battle agility: 13.84%
active defense: 17.3% (it's not too tough to double stack this, which has some nice side benefits- more mez protection, enough to keep you safe from x8 carnies)
grant cover: 17.3%

total with double stacked AD: 65.7% ddr
single stacked AD with no grant cover: 31.1%

Lots of baddies debuff defense. Cims, arachnos, carnies, anything with a machine gun.
edit to add: cascading defense failure was/will soon be again the most frequent cause of death for my shield scrapper

This is the build I have in store, I would make it, but I already have an electric brute so I don't want to repeat a set again, not bad, just don't feel like doing it, I skipped the fire mastery for mu mastery. Why? it fits thematically and you only need 2 power picks for the targeted aoe as opposed to fire mastery which requires you to waste one more power, the build has aid self, but you can remove it and put something else if you so desire.

Per EJI's post above, Shield can reach pretty decent levels of DDR (resistance to defense debuffs) which is important in many contexts (starting as as early as lvl35 in Cimerora)

You probably want to take Grant Cover for that reason alone (also nice to your teammates) and add more recharge to stack Active Defense at least twice.
