Spines/Dark, does it get better?

After I finally got my first character to 50 (a MM) I decided to give in to altitis again, and roll another scrapper, the last one in a long line of scrappers (which for some reason never reached lvl 50).
My scrapper of choice was a flavor of the week way back when in I4 or I5 or smth, and I've always wanted to try it out.
First few lvls were a blast, I avoided DFB and just ran missions. Minions keeled over as soon as I touched them with the awesomeness of 2 damage aura's compared. But soon I found a problem, I could either run my damage aura's and hit 2 or 3 attacks per mob before my end bar was non-existent, my toggles dropped, and i got another taste of the floor.

I thought this was because i was just running around with TO's/DO's, but even after I hit 22 and fully pimped my char out with SO's he still didn't survive, the damage reduction feels like it's too little, and the self heal saps about 1/4th of my already very near depletion end bar.

So now my question is, will it get better? Or do I first need to struggle my way through another 26 levels, a few incarnate trials and billions of INF in IO-sets before I can take out spawns better than -1/x2, and not feel like an obese smoker who had to walk up 3 flights of stairs after each mob.

For what it's worth; my build has 1 end/3 res in the shields (except the mez-resist one), 2 end/1 acc in quills/death shroud, 3 slotted stamina and 1 acc/2 dmg in the attacks.

It gets better. My go to farmer/PL toon on my main account is a Spines/Dark scrapper. I don't have a build at work but here are a few tips:

Slot Dark Regen with Theft of Essence. At the very least with three of them including the proc.

I also 5 slot Reactive armor in my shields.

All in all I didn't spend much on the build at all. The most expensive set I used was Obliteration so I can get the 5% recharge bonus.

Once you get to 50 the Incarnate powers help out a lot. I use Cardiac Core for my Alpha and Ageless Core for my Destiny

Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

Short answer - yes it gets better. It is a nice set, with killer AOE that makes it peform like a continuous mini-nuke.
Spines/DA have been running at highest difficulty since back when only SOs existed.

That said, Dark Armor is a end hogging, selfish, fickle, beauty.

  • limit aura usage until end is stable - skip CoF, a damage aura, or whatever mix works for your style
  • recovery serum is a nice recipe temp
  • slot end reduc in powers aggressively
  • the heal [Dark Regeneration] is a beautiful power that just destroys blue bars - IO solution there is get the Theft of Essence proc slotted in it, as it can actually add end after its usage if it hits enough targets
  • standard numina/miracle/performance shifter recommendations
  • get physical perfection out of the epic

City of Heroes was my first MMO, & my favorite computer game.

R.I.P.

/DA is actually one of my favorite secondaries, as you can acquire defense but the resists are naturally ingrained in that one to make it a very "tanky" type set if you want it to be and slot for Def and Recharge...it is an end hog early...I like to pair with DM to get Dark Consumption so you can stem the tide some earlier...but Spines and claws have a low inherent cost so that should help you out there...

Shields are fine. I like to run 2 end reductions until I get some recovery bonuses, but 1 is fine. Later on you'll want to put some resistance in Obsidian Shield too, Psi damage gets more common in the high levels and Dark Armor can get more resistance to it than any other set.

Slot some Damage in your damage auras too. Common sense: the fewer ticks you need to kill enemies = the fewer other attacks you need to hit to kill a spawn = fewer attacks used = less end usage.

Put end reductions in your attacks. They burn more end over time than all of your toggles combined.

planet j makes a good point about Dark Regeneration. The Theft of Essence proc is the single most important IO you can slot in a Dark Armor character. If you use only 1 IO at all, make it that one.

Work on building some defense as well. The fewer attacks that hit you, the less often you'll have to use your end bar killer (Dark Regeneration) A Spines/Dark should be capable of hitting 32.5% defense to Smashing/Lethal/Energy/Negative attacks, which will put you within a single purple inspiration of being softcapped.

Cloak of Fear is an inaccurate end hog, but once you have your end consumption under control it might be useful for cutting down incoming damage (it will also give you a place to slot Siphon Insight for the 3.75% S/L defense it gives)

It is possible to build a Spines/Dark without IOs, but Dark Armor gets 10x better when you add appropriate IOs to it, so you might want to look into going that route.

And it's even better if you choose to pick up Shadow Meld

I just played around a bit, and running only 1 damage aura already fixes a lot of the endurance problems i've been having.

Also i got lucky with drops, so now I have a karma -kb slotted, is mag -4 enough for most content, or should i look into another -4 in a travelpower for a total of -8?

And I looked on the market for the +end proc, and to be honest, if that proc is really worth the 100M+ they're being sold for I expect wonders...

Checkout paragonwiki. It lists all enemies with KB attacks and their mag:

http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Knockbac...ockback_Powers

I think 10-12 protection is good. 4 is ok, but it may lull you into a false sense of security until you run into an AV or something. Katie Hannon TF is the worst, Mary MacComber and her gang were skipping my like a stone on a lake.

As for the Performance Shifter proc, don't expect a whole lot. It adds an average of 0.2 e/s (10 end every 50s). It doesn't sound like much but if you take Physical Perfection and add another proc, mix in Numina and Miracle procs. It all adds up to quite a bit of end mitigation. You're going to need to be vigilant with your endurance until you're 50 and get your alpha which will most likely be Cardiac or Vigor. Check your ingame email.

Edit: If you do go with 4, carry some breakfrees with you. They give you mag 5 protection for 1 min.

With the +end Proc i actually meant Theft of Essence in Dark Regen. And offcourse i'm gonna slot Miracle, Numina and Performance Shifter too...

Np. I have a ToE proc slotted in Dark Regeneration and majority of the time I gain a little more end than DR's end cost. If your DR has zero end reduction and costs 33.8e to cast, ToE will reduce your DR's end cost by about 60% in most cases.

If you can get DR's end cost to about 20, on average DR will be an endurance-free power to use.

Edit: Above numbers are while fighting a group and DR is hitting several-max targets. ToE proc is pretty useless if you are 1-on-1 vs an AV, GM etc.

With T3 Cardiac and both +end accolades this leaves me at a positive endurance gain of 2 end/sec while running nearly all toggles.

Any powers i absolutely need, but didn't put in? Any things over or underslotted? Any other commentary? Everything is welcome

Any thoughts

Add a Steadfast Protection +3 def IO. Last I remember the recipe was going for 30mil. I altered your build a bit to get S/L/E/N def a little higher. With Cardiac, you might have too much endurance gain. I think my Spines/DA has only 1.6 e/s and I can go a long while before hitting Conserve Power, back to full and CP will be recharged before I need it again. Remember all your powers cost less use (Throw Spines, Ripper, Lunge etc) which is not reflected in the EndRec/EndUse section of Mids' (Only represents the toggles).

Opressive Gloom has low end cost and is effective with a single accuracy IO. Take Cardiac to T4 Core, the extra damage resist is nice to have.
