Newbie question? Salvo Acc/Dam on Super Strength

Hey,

I've just started playing and I'm having a lot of fun. My highest level is now a 20 Brute with Super Strength.

I have one problem where I can't figure out what I did wrong.

I've crafted an enhancement "Salvo: Accuracy/Damage" that I wanted to put on one of my Super Strength Powers, but it doesn't allow me to.
I wanted to use it on Punch, but it doesn't work on Haymaker, Knockout Blow, Spring Attack or Jab either.

I can't understand why not, all of them allow enhancements to accuracy and damage.

Cheers,

RW

That's a Ranged Damage recipe, you want Melee Damage. Unlike generic enhancements, Invention sets can only be slotted into powers that take those sets, and sets are (somewhat) more specialized than regular enhancements (Ranged/Melee/Pet/PBAoE/Targeted AoE Damage, for instance, are all flavors of damage, but only Melee will go into the powers you listed).

If you happen to pick up Hurl at level 26 (which I personally didn't on my SS Tank), you could slot it there, although that wouldn't be a great slotting option.

More info about Set IOs.

P.S. Bookmark ParagonWiki (http://www.paragonwiki.com or http://wiki.cohtitan.com ,they point to the same site), it's your friend, but NEVER follow links to any CoH wiki hosted on the site wikia.com, it's a haven of malware and outdated info.

"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill

From paragonwiki:

'Set IO Categories

IO Sets are divided into about 30 categories. Individual powers are marked to allow IO Sets from only specific categories. E.g.,
Hover only allows IO Sets that are from the Fly, Defense, or Universal Travel Set Categories. Some powers only allow one or even no Set Categories. The powers that don't have any Set Categories will not allow you to slot any IOs from an IO Set, but will allow the use of Common IOs.'

So check the IO category - like Salvo, it's a ranged set as others said - so it goes in powers that accept ranged sets like Hurl (in the case of Super Strength) or most single-target blasts from blasters and others, like ice blast, fire blast, while fireball, being a ranged power that can hit multiple foes, can only accept Targeted AoE (area of Effect) sets.

Here you can see all the sets and their category. But some powers accept more than one type of set. In your case, Knockout Blow for example accepts melee damage, knockback, taunt and hold sets (you ideally want an end result that gives good damage, recharge and endurance reduction in that power). You can check this by hovering over the powers in the 'manage' screen, which sets each power takes.

Mid's does that too but it may look a bit complicated at the beginning.

Yeah, I've been reading the Paragon Wiki. Sometimes it's more outdated than the wikia.com one though.

I looked at this page, but it didn't say it was Ranged Damage:
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Salvo:_Accuracy/Damage

I now see it is mentioned in the page on the Salvo Set.

Is there a way to see the category in game? I had no clue that something like this was an issue before I spent my infamy and salvage. And I've tried figuring it out before I made this post as I suspected something like this might be going on, given the name "Salvo".

Thanks for the link, I'll be sure to check that page in the future to avoid making this mistake again.

I run on a Mac, so Mid's character builder doesn't work for me. The online version seems to be down.

Yes, although it's buried in the middle of a bunch of other info, so very easy to miss, as you've discovered! When you mouse over the enhancement, you'll see something like this, using an enhancement on the character I happen to be playing at this moment as an example:

Multi-Strike: Damage/Endurance
Enhances Damage and Reduces Endurance Cost
Enhances the damage of a power by blah blah...

You may not combine this enhancement with any others.
Effectiveness does not vary as Security Level changes

Set: Multi-Strike (3/6)
Enhancements Set Category: PBAoE Damage <<-----this is what you're looking for
Then it lists the enhancements in the set and etc.

Similarly, your Salvo should say Ranged Damage there. You can see which set categories a power can take by mousing over the power in your enhancement screen: it's listed above the total values of enhancements in the power.

This image from in-game might make it even a bit easier to see (hover over either uncrafted recipe or crafted enhancement to see these tooltips; red box around category added by me for clarity):

No, it's not. That's simply not possible. The Wikia site used to be the Paragon Wiki, so all the data started the same, but the wikia hasn't been updated reliably since the split a few years ago. Nearly all the reliable editors work on the Paragon Wiki. I would be highly surprised to see a page on the wikia that was more accurate than the Paragon Wiki.

Ah, thanks. That explains it. Both of you thanks for the replies.

No problem -- welcome to the game, and keep asking those questions anytime!

(And StarGeek is right, I STRONGLY encourage you to stay away from the wikia site, and if you see something on the REAL wiki that you think is outdated, feel free to update it or bring it to someone's attention!)

I don't know enough about the game yet to feel confident to update stuff. It could just be myself misunderstanding something. I think I've come across Super Jump being mentioned as unlocked at level 14, which I think it was before Issue 21. It's not in the main topic though and I can't find any more where I've seen it, so I could be remembering it wrong.

A quick check of the changelogs for both sites (ugh, I know) indicates that the Paragon Wiki was updated moments ago, and the craptacular virus and RMT-filled bad place was updated...hrm. The changelog isn't working. But the front page news message is dated April of 2009.

If you're concerned with some information, ask. We can check for you, and even let the right people know that something needs fixing--after all, this is made by the players.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

It wasn't meant as an attack on people here. When I started this game on a free account I often pulled up the same topic on both wiki's and then compared. I just remember that in most cases I noticed the Paragon wiki to be more up-to-date, but also a few cases where the reverse seemed true.

As this was before upgrading to VIP, I don't remember exactly what topics. I've searched my browser history, but it only goes back a week.

It's not really important, I'll bring it up if I come across it again, or fix it myself if I'm confident enough by that time.

I do like the Paragon Wiki. I tend to immerse myself in any new game I play, usually starting on reading resources like that even before joining the game. I've been an active contributor on several wiki's, and if I play this game long enough, I'll probably try to join the ranks of the Paragon wiki contributors as well.

If I offended anyone with my remark, then you have my sincere apologies.

Thanks for all the replies, I think we're going off-topic and my original question has been answered, so maybe we should end the discussion here.

No one took it as an attack (that I can tell).
We just wouldn't want someone to read what you posted and incorrectly assume that the wikia site is comparable. It's genuinely bad news. The site was confirmed to have malware on at least one occasion and accepts ads from gold farmers. And, of course, since it's not supported/updated by this community, it will steadily become more and more out of date.

The site at Paragonwiki.com is run by someone who plays the game and who created/maintains the site as a service to the community.
