Best two for a combo?
Ok, I'll give you three options:
1) Use enhancements which are cheap and single aspect but require maintenance every few levels to upgrade or replace. 2) Use enhancements which are relatively expensive, are single aspect, must be crafted, but do not require maintenance once slotted. 3) Use enhancements which are dirt cheap on the market, have several aspects which provide greater enhancement values than comparable single aspect ones, must be crafted, do not require maintenance once slotted, and occasionally give you set bonuses on top of all that. Out of those three, option three is very often the cheapest and it gives you far better results while leveling your character. Maybe using only SOs and only Common IOs isn't "poor planning." But if you can come up with a better term for "an alternative plan which yields worse results for a greater cost" that doesn't imply poor planning, I'm all ears. |

You can get a full set of pounding slugfest for peanuts. That's better than generics or SOs. Full set of razzle dazzle? People pay you to take that from them. Far better than the other options. The salvage can be expensive if you cannot possibly wait to have it, but if you can wait just put out bids on the stuff you need for 555 influence or so and watch them fill within an hour probably, or overnight definitely, even on things like circuit boards and luck charms that can be pricey during prime time. You almost have to go out of your way to spend any significant amount of money on low level frankenslotting, the real investment is a few minutes of your time as compared to SOs where you just buy whatever you want and you're done. To me the performance advantage of IOs makes that time investment a no brainer.
Yeah I think both of us know that there isn't a set rule when it comes to the topic; which is why I said it the way I did.

I've started a Time Defender the other day, and it struck me that a duo would be quite powerful.
+130% Recharge to each of you due to Chronoshifts (50% each) and Temporal Selection (another 30%).
That beats an empathy duo.
You get Fortitude level damage and accuracy boosts from Temporal selction and Farsight, easily capped defence with double Farsight and manouvers on top of the deuffs of Time's Juncture.
Is a Time/Sonic duo the new Empathy/Sonic duo?
Has anyone tried, um.. two-timing?
To get back to topic . . . the best duo I have tried was my Plant/Kin Controller teamed with an Elec/Shield scrapper. Scrapper grabbed the aggro, and then everything was confused, immobilized, fulcrum-shifted and Dead in no time. The Scrapper's double-whammy of Lightning Rod-Shield Charge was able to wipe out large groups, and my Speed Boost helped them Recharge faster.

Hi. My name is RaikenX...and I'm a "poor planner" because I'm still an SO slob.
LOL
Sorry Dechs. I had to...it was there!
I'm actually, little by little, trying to get a good grasp on IO's after my accident with making a pretty friggin good brute.
I still tend to stick with SO's till around 27 when i can start slotting basic 30 IO's, but usually hold off on sets till sometime later, usually when i can figure out how i really wanna slot stuff and which powers i may/may not wanna keep/take.
On topic:
A friend and I actually had a pretty good amount of success with his Fire/Ice tanker and my TA/Archery Defender. He'd grab agro, cluster up the mobs...then i'd debuff the snot outta them and toss in Oil Slick Arrow. ....There's just something about shooting that arrow at a Fire tanker and making their Burn patch really, REALLY big! Hehehehehehe.
Oh....and of course...Rain of Arrows.
RaikenX is currently seeking new quotes to add to his signature.
Someone say something funny.
That'll do, pig. That'll do.

There's nothing wrong with doing a build entirely on SOs, especially if you're not comfortable with the market or invention system. SOs are what the game was designed and balanced around.
It's the "set out at 47" that I take issue with. The people that do this know the invention system and likely have mids backing them up. Most of the sets these people use cap at levels 40 or below. There's just no reason to wait until 47 unless you just don't have the power until then.
There's still nothing "wrong" with doing things that way. It's just lazy, inefficient, and costly to maintain. Again, it's not wrong, but when you're comparing different methods of slotting up a character, this one's poor at best.

The best success and most fun I've EVER had with a duo, and also the longest-lived one since my buddy tended to get bored and want to roll another toon, was me playing an Illusion/Empathy controller and him a Claws/Regen scrapper. From the time we rolled we never died ONCE, and when we started one-shotting mobs we upped the diff again. Between his already stupid high damage and Regen/Recovery rate and my Phantoms/Phantasm plus almost constant Fortitude, Adrenaline Boost and Recovery/Regen auras (not to mention the defense boosts from Group and Superior Invisibility) we never even came CLOSE to dying, and we were absolutely destroying mobs. What he couldn't one-shot went down very quickly between him and my pets. I'd definitely recommend the combo if you want a good time and lots of power. Just bear in mind that an Ill/Emp is a very hands-on troller, with auras and buffs to keep up, plus pet and some light control management.
I feel like I've misrepresented myself, so I'm just going to clarify:

I never IO a character until it gets to level 50. I mean, I'll buy some items like LOTG's at level 25, Kinetic Combats at level 35, Steadfast KB Protection and 3% Defense at level 10... But that's pretty much it. If you're wondering why, I'll tell you. It's because I'm lazy. It's because I'm cheap. It's because I'm lazy and cheap. If I'm not going to use something in a final build, it's just not worth it to me to spend the time buying/crafting/slotting it or the time I'd need to spend beforehand planning it in Mids.

And in many cases, I spend my time playing the character instead of crafting. As I'm leveling up a character, I usually only load up that character if there is a TF or something that I want to do. I fill up with SOs because it is quick, then do the TF and immediately put the character away until the next time.
When characters reach level 50 (0r nearly there), I will then take a look at the character and decide if this is one that I want to invest the time and influence on coming up with a mid level good build, or an expensive Final build. With 30-something level 50 character, many of them don't have end-game builds.
There are some characters that I will IO out as soon as I can, but not many. I tend to skip around on characters a lot.

I was in a TF yesterday with my Sonic/Ice blaster and a Illusion/Time controller. It worked out the two of us would split off and go duo on the groups. With 2 overlapping sleeps we would have even the bosses asleep before they could twitch.
Then when the attacks started we had the mobs:
On Ice patch
Shivered
Bosses slowed and debuffed
All the overlapping cones of Sonics -res and a group would last a few seconds.
I would completely love to run a duo with that combo again:
Sonic/Ice blaster
Illusion/Time controller
We had a ball destroying a +2 x 8 TF spawns without being slightly threatened.
As for IO's I start around 37ish to round them up. Some I build if I get drops or as someone said the Chance of Procs and other bonuses are best at lower levels for when you EX down.
The regen cap for scrappers is 3000%. You don't have to worry about hitting that unless you're rocking instant healing, regeneration aura, adrenalin boost and possibly also rebirth.
