Constant crashing.

So after the 12/6 patch, the problems began. Little things at first, pieces disappearing, building floors and walls disappearing, text becoming unreadable. /reloadgfx normally fixed these things. Occasional crashes, usually when bringing up a conversation with an NPC or bringing up my costume menu. But as of the most recent patches, the crashes have become far more frequent. I'd get one just standing there, or at random times, while other times I'd be just fine, and could do whole trials with no issue. Occasionally I'd actually get an error pop up, usually regarding a .pigg file. I never actually received a mapserver message.

As of today, the crashes increased, so I decided to update my drivers. I've got an HD6950, and was running 11.5 due to driver errors in the past. As a result of all these problems, I moved to 11.10 which is the most recent driver confirmed to cause no issue. For a time it seemed solved, but then the crashes began again. Now I can't even get into a character. I'll select one and attempt to log in, but the loading bar will quit halfway through and it freezes. I've noticed others with similar issues to what I've been having, but what I want to know is if there's any kind of fix for this or if I just can't play until the patchfix, whenever that is. It's very frustrating.

11.9 seems to be the most stable of the most recent drivers. There has been an uptick of people having issues since 12/6 with "stable" drivers but no word yet as to a common cause.

(I'll note that I am using 11.3, 11.9 and 11.10 with no crashing issues.)

This setting seems a bit high.

Anti-aliasing: 8x
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x

I'd also recommend cranking down or disabling Ambient Occlusion. That is using a lot of resources and has also been know to cause problems with either Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering. And as newchemicals notes, the settings for those two are rather high as well.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I'm sorry I am only coming in for an unrelated item, but I just have to say this:

I love your HDA avatar, Perfidus! Mariqueen looked great burnin' up in that video, didn't she? Wait, that sounds wrong... I don't mean that how it sounded... I meant, it was cool how they did it.

And she looks good....

so she looked good burnin' up.

Meh. Forget it. HDA rocks.

Ok, y'all carry on.

August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.

Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012

I found the root issue, and it wasn't even the game at all. I had bad sectors on my HDD, which was causing the crashes, and giving me symptoms I'd seen others having. After running /chkdsk and for good measure changing my drivers to 11.9, it's been smooth sailing.

Also, houtex, thank you. I'm a long time NIN fan, and embraced HTDA with open arms despite the fact it got a lot of hate. The video -was- boss!
