Dusting off an old defender

Okay, so I am thinking of using this old defender of mine I haven't used in a long time(as the title suggests). I got him to lvl.45 before I just stopped mostly due to then lag/rubberband issues.

Anyways I just wanted a few basic pointers on how to set this guy up for after I respec him. I am not interested in getting very many enhancement sets so for now I'll just use mostly SO's and generic IO's until I get the hang of playing him again. Anyways, here is my current projected look on how he will be once he is respecced, minus any enhancements at all, and he is only lvl.45 right now.

Thank you for any time taken to respond and I'm sorry if I came across as lazy by not bothering to put enhancements in the slots in midi.

With Fulcrum Shift, siphon power is imo skippable. Repel is fun for S & G but skippable. I took two additional attacks in their place. I also took superspeed (relying on Siphon Speed and IR is not always optimal) Hover (excellent for Energy Blast and provides a good view above the battlefield) and Power sink. I moved Vengeance down to 49 (helpful but not necessarily needed at that level). Power Push is good with the base slot. Nova only really needs just 3 slots for damage.

I left some slots open on purpose

Celerity Stealth IO in Superspeed
BotZ KB resist in IR
Numina and Miracle Procs in Health

Siphon Power is very good for debuffing hard targets such as AVs as well as keeping the team's damage up when you only have 1 target. It's situational but still useful and a good 1-slot wonder power pick.

^This. Especially on a defender, because being able to debuff an AV by 50% with just two powers is fun and effective. You can switch Aim out for it. Aim is less useful because you have tactics for plenty of +ToHit and the damage buff is unnecessary with Fulcrum Shift.

Okay, thanks for the help. I ended up going with siphon power in place of superspeed I think. Other than that I followed the basic formula for what you gave me. If my kinetic travel powers is ever inefficient I can always just hop on my rocket board if I don't need my leadership and armor the instant I hop off of it.

However when I tried to go out and solo in order to get the hang of the basic controls and functions of this toon I had..quite a bit of trouble even on standard difficulty settings(+0x1nobossnoav). I realize that I'll obviously be my most powerful in groups but if anybody has advice that can help my ability to solo, it should also help my ability to help in smaller teams right?

In my experience, Kin Defs lack defense as a power combo, so their solo-ability suffers. I'm sure you'll have dozens of forumites telling you how they solo with Kin Defs at +7/x40 and don't miss a beat, but I'm skeptical. They are awesome on teams. And they can be effective solo, but it seems, to my experience, to require more patience than most defs do.

Caveat: My lvl 50 Kin Def is a Kin/Sonic. My lvl 50 /energy def is a FFer. So, my opinions are based purely on extrapolation, not on having actually played that combo. My Kin/Energy's are totally non-existent.

I stand by taking psy mastery, getting Mass Hypnosis to set up the big FS/Nova alpha strike.
