Ever have a character surpass your every expectation?
Lockdown Artist, my Plant/Psi Dom. I created her to explore domination for the first time, and she's become my hands-down main. I race SS/FA brutes in fire farms and then turn around and solo 54 AVs without Lore pets. But I think the best thing about her is her ability to not even blink when faced with traditionally difficult enemies such as Longbow, DE/Nemesis, and Malta. It's amusing how little my personal defenses matter when every spawn is unable to attack me or the team.
Killari, my Claws/SR brute. I knew going in that /SR could be good, but I was surprised by how silly a soft-capped character gets (she was my first). On top of that, I found how much I love Claws, which I really didn't expect. I find myself wondering what this strange button called Build Up is on my other melee toons; clearly, it should be another attack! Also, delicious, delicious Spin.
She's since become my main character for Incarnate stuff.
Mine has to be my namesake Electric/Electric blaster. When the incarnate stuff rollled around, I decided, of course, he was first. I wanted to flesh out his concept of pure electricty so I build for some energy defense. Had to use the scorpion shield, but that was the only non-electric I used. It started as concept but turned into power. He now has about 40% smashing/Lethal/Energy defense and like 30+% negative defense. Splash a little clarion hold protection on that and you have a beast. So when I thought he was awesome and cool before...apparently I didn't know what I had.
I've had three that utterly astonished me.
I made an elec/elec scrapper because they lowered the damage of shield charge before I got myfirst shield scrapper to 50. I wanted the full-power version, you see.
Holy moly, SO MUCH FUN. Elec/elec with a build makes such wonderful sounds! Thunderstrike is almost better than Lightning Rod! And this was the toon that taught me the glories of melee nukers, with synchronized build up and lightning rod.
The REAL surprise was my fire/fire tanker. I rolled it up just to have a low-grade farmer, something I could grind through radios at x8 when I was in the mood to beat stuff up. I expected so little from this toon, I leveled it without ever once opening Mids: I just took whatever powers I wanted and let the chips fall.
At 50...I had a beast. Much, much MUCH better than any other fire toon I'd ever played, mostly because of the awesome of Combustion/Fire Sword Circle/Burn. So out of curiosity, I popped 10 billion or so into it. OMG, what a monster. Completely my go-to toon these days.
And the third? Well, I liked the fire/fire tanker so much, I rolled an exact copy on my second account.
Yeah, that one is a monster, too. Astonishing.
AR/Sonic Corruptor
Sturdy, AoE scourge goodness, and knockback/knock up galore.
For me it would have to be my mind/trick arrow controller which I made simply because you very rarely see mind controllers and very rarely see trick arrow ANYTHINGs.
At low levels she was virtually useless on teams - having only really two useful controls in dominate and confusion - levitate and mesmerise were really more damage powers. As for aoe it was even worse. Mass Hypnosis is not very effective on teams. Solo she was a little better - and safer.
But I persevered and was so glad that I did. Shes now an AOE control machine with two aoe holds, an aoe confuse, a fear effect and lets not forget Oil Slick Arrow which is just there to make lots of orange numbers fast.
But where she surprised me the most was solo play. She is perhaps the safest controller I have ever made and so far I have managed to solo x8/+4 Council, Circle of Thorns and Malta (I admit I cheated on Malta by confusing the Zeus Titans and let them do all the work - not much xp but bloody good fun!). I normally run at x8/+1 and she can pretty much take anything in her stride including KoA, Malta, Arachnos and Nemesis. And this was before I unlocked her Alpha Slot!
Shes now my main controller and I look forward to the day when I have the cash to put five Ragnaroks in Oil Slick arrow which I hope will make some pretty sick orange numbers appear!
My dark/DP/dark defender. So much fun!
