Fire/Storm Buzzsaw

Hello all again,

So for the regulars here, you may remember I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to build out an Ice/Storm controller.

I have since discovered the joys of Fire/Storm and regardless of the massive end issues it's pretty dang fun to play. More so than my ice/storm tbh.

So I spent the day reading every one of your posts regarding fire/storms and even went so far as to PM some of the controller masters for advice.(I didn't send one to you Local Man cause I bugged you on my Elec/Rad and figured I'd bug someone else this time :P )

This toon will do the following:
iTrials
TF's
Maybe some fire mish ticket farming
Maybe some peregrine portal/radio mish's
Hunt Badges and Accolades.

Please note that I have taken all of the advice on these forums regarding the APP's and chose fire simply because I like to play with fire and it fits with my playstyle. The other APPs have their appeal(like a heal of some kind) But my primary focus was End Redux like crazy and fill in around that.

If you wouldn't mind taking a look at this build and tell me if anything is glaringly obvious that I should change out.

Tam

PS Accolades and Incarnate are both Turned ON.

Not sure I get the Ragnorak IOs in Freezing Rain. A couple of recharges and maybe and achilles proc and save the slots (or see below).

I haven't updated mids so I don't see the numbers but besides getting end reduction you really need to build a fire/storm with +end and +recovery in mind. You seem pretty hellbent on +recharge and while its nice you are also sacrificing some powers(and slotting) in the name of recharge. While some (even a lot) is nice; it's not as vitally important for a buzzsaw. Steamy mist is underslotted. 4 Impervium armor there will get you +2.25 end and 2.5% recovery.(I'd do that in fire shield as well. 4 Ghost Widows will also get you +2.25 end (I'd then add a couple of thunderstrikes damage heavy IOs to char for a little more damage and/or recharge/end and a couple of recharge heavy IOs to cinders) I like 4 dampened spirits in hurricane; 3slotted gets you +1.8 end. An alternate slotting method depending on how slots are going would be to at least three slot FR with undermined Defenses which also gives you +1.8 end. Since recovery is based off a percentage of how much total end you have, increasing the amount of end you have is a nice way to boost your overall recovery. Then I look for all the little ways of getting +recovery and I see you have a lot of them.

This is just top of my head stuff here. Also, even as a marketeer, I really don't put a lot of expensive purples in my builds. The extra-extra-extra influence you pay never seems worth the slight increase in numbers. Take recovery, you'll pay like 10 times (or even more) for only 1.5% increase in recovery. As an alt heavy player, I'm not so sure it's worth that. If its my only toon, then I can understand. But the difference in performance at that point is minimal.

If I remember correctly the Soulbound Allegiance proc doesn't work well with Fire Imps. Since they only have one attack, when it procs I believe it will boost at most one attack from the imp.

For procs in Freezing Rain, again going from memory, but I believe that power does have a tohit check. Most people ignore it because it tics so fast and has a defense debuff, so you can pretty safely ignore the tohit check. However with a proc in the power it will roll the proc twice. Once on initial cast, then again 10 seconds in. If it misses on the first tic, that proc opportunity is lost. The fix is to slot some accuracy in the power. Whether it's worth burning the extra slots for accuracy to make the procs effective is your call to make.

I'm not so sure about your char slotting. The lockdown proc isn't a great choice for a ST hold. I'd give thought to two thunderstrike (whichever you feel you need for the power) and eek out another 2% recovery.

To MentalMaden:
It's funny you mentioned that I was hellbent on recharge...oddly enough the recharge I had was accidental at the time - I simply put everything that had +recovery on it.
I have to say that the addition of +END was a remarkable boost and hadn't taken into account the fact that +Recovery is % based. Brilliant!

In Thunderclap try to up the Acc more. It's a PBAoE stun so the +range portions of the IO's are wasted (and as an aoe mez it has a built in acc penalty to start with).

In general the overall accuracy of your aoe powers is low. Hitting stuff particularly things significantly up level (such as level 54's) might get frustrating depending on your tolerances for such things. Kind of a catch 22 but the initial thought of "well it'll be debuffed by Freezing Rain" while true might end up less true than desired due to purple patch vs +4's though again might come down to how tolerant you are personally to missing. Swapping to a Kismet +6% in Hover plus Freezing Rain debuff should nudge you closer to hitting 95% overall with those AoE's.

And I just sold a Kismet Unique 2 days ago...FML
Thank you for that - I was so hung up on +rec that I completely forgot about +acc.

Not having played a high level fire controller I'm curious if that much focus on recovery is really necessary given that you are slotting cardiac and have consume. I have a significantly lower net endurance gain than you do on my Storm Defender, but don't have any endurance troubles, but then I don't have a good sense of how endurance intensive fire control is (I know hot feet is expensive). If you end up finding that you don't need all that recovery, I would consider recouping some of the recharge bonuses that you dropped. (Dark Watchers were made for Hurricane).

Also, I would not slot the Kismet Unique. I only looked at the second build you posted, but I don't think you're going to have trouble hitting things. Just glancing at your build I see 39% accuracy bonus, and in general you haven't skimped on the accuracy in your powers. (Fire Cages and Lightning Storm could use a second look though)

I'm also curious about your playstyle. I don't see hurricane and hot feet playing particularly well together except in corners, so you could also conserve endurance by not running both powers all the time. But then my experience with Hot feet is quite limited, so perhaps that works better than it does in my mind. In fact, Cinders and Thunderclap won't play particularly well with hurricane either, so I'm not certain that you need to have the endurance capability to run hurricane all the time, but then maybe I'm missing the whole buzzsaw concept...

I'm not crazy about building this way for set bonuses, and most of what I would recommend would shift your set bonus focus. But there is at least one tweak I see that keeps your bonuses intact:
Cinders is overslotted for hold duration. You can do better by swapping one of your hold/x for an x/somethingelse.

The intention isn't to run hurricane constantly. There are a few times it is nice to use. You can herdicane to a corner then turn it off then go into your attack/control chain. Or if you can get enemies into a dead end, hurricane is nice to crush them against a wall debuffed and dying. It's also nice on incarnate trials, especially the BAF escapee phase. Also as a panic button.

And since you don't have experience with the fire/storm aspect, yes it's that end intense. Storm is one of my favorite powersets as well, and you are right, my defender or corruptor doesn't use near the end my fire/storm does. It's really comparing apples to quinces to be honest. That said, I'll argue heavily that dampened spirits is made for hurricane. Then again I'm a total end Nazi.

Your build is a bit different than how I might have done it. Here are my nitpicks:

- IMO the APP version of Consume is pretty awful. In any case, it needs Accuracy slotting and possibly Endurance Mod as well if you keep it. If you stay with the Fire APP I would definitely drop Consume for Fire Blast.

- It appears you skipped your single target blast. I personally wouldn't, but if you do, you might consider a switch the Mu pool. This give you Power Sink, which is a much better endurance tool than Consume, and is auto-hit. You could also then choose to play with the Surge of Power godmode or pick up the pet, which rumor has it is one of the better ones (it has a heal). Doing this would let you drop Cardiac entirely if you wanted for Spiritual, which in turn lets you get the pet perma. Note that to do this you will have to at least temporarily turn villain.

- Just as an IMO, the number of travel power picks could be toned down for a lot of affect. Speaking purely for myself, I tend to think that Controllers typically make poor candidates for powers like Long Range Teleport compared to many other ATs because their power lists are already packed with exotic power picks. If you just can't live without LTR stay with it, but I would personally consider it splurging at the expense of the build.

- Regeneration does little for Controllers in the amounts available.

- Without a single target blast IMO you really want at least Ring of Fire.

A sample build with these mods and a few other changes appears below. I picked up 22% Ranged defense, which isn't a lot but not completely awful either. With more latitude I could probably come up with slightly better numbers. The APP Guardian is down for only 9 seconds assuming it stays alive, and you can Power Sink about every 35 seconds to restore your endurance.

Here is my build. This build is based on having a cardiac alpha.

Before the cardiac existed I didnt have hasten to lower my endurance costs.

Even with as much recovery I have slotted and built in with set bonuses I can on occasion still run myself out of energy. It is rare though.

This really fits my play style well. Your mileage may vary. There are a whole lot of ways to build a fire/storm.

Are you going for max control? max damage? A mix? Debuffs? Lots of ways to focus.

I find lockdown +2 mag awesome in char.

My char recharges in under 5 seconds. I can spam it around the board and have a very good chance of holding bosses and EB's in one hit.

To respond to another post: recovery is everything for a fire/storm controller. Both fire control and storm summoning eat endurance like cotton candy. I am toggle heavy though.

I agree with the usefulness of the Lockdown in char. You're sacrificing a slot in order to add another chance to Overpower to the hold. Against nasty bosses (which the Incarnate Trials are stuffed with) it's a nice addition IMO.

Of course it's wasted against Lieuts and Minions, but at the end game level they're mostly trivial distractions anyway in terms of suitable targets for a single target hold.

It's not a huge deal, but two applications on a boss with hold them anyway and I personally would rather have a little more acc and damage for the power. LocalMan has some interesting thoughts on the subject. To me I think it makes sense for a non controller/dominator to use this IO. YMMV.

And Oedipus, I have the Mu pet on my Ele/Rad and was excited about it's heal. I still haven't noticed him using it yet. Not that he doesn't, just that it's not enough to notice.

After playing my fire/storm since before Cardiac Core and always having to carry a boatload of blues to do anything after the first mob, here is my advise;

Char - toss the Lockdown-proc. You got enough holds to stack without rolling the dice just for a chance of a extra hold. Personally I have my Lockdown-proc in Cinders, and it is fun to watch 2 to 3 members of the mob get their little sparkly cage... but really the proc duration is so short that unless its a "I'm so screwed!" moment, you don't really need it even there.

Freezing Rain - Local Man has brought me around to his view on Freezing Rain and its slotting. Which is recharge, recharge, recharge.... and maybe a proc or two if you got room. So I would go with Oedipus Tex's build on these power.

Teleports - I like teleport, have fun with teleport... yet you need to toss them from this build. Better to just go for some mules for some LoTG- recharges.

Hurricane - In my farm build, I don't have it. Really after a purple slotted Flashfire, the duration is long enough to even get the last remaining boss close to death. Now on teams, there is many-a-days I wish I had hurricane but you can live without it.

Lightning Storm -I'm a huge fan of LS, and wish I could get my recharge where I could have two up all the time. But sad to say, I can only keep up two for a narrow 20-ish second window. But I would advise, toss the hold proc... again its all cool but its duration is so short that I rather have the damage/end/recharge/etc over it.

Fire Mastery - Not the best choice in my mind. Another AOE is all fine and good, but there are better ones out there. I have PSY but Mu is another good one, as I would be more worried about plugging any holes in my build then just more damage. By itself, a fire/storm puts out a amazing amount of it with its aoes.

Cardiac - Love it, need it... accept no others! Take it from someone who use to run a fire/storm without it. It was murder, total crazy fun to try to farm with a fire/storm ( I think I got mine to 50 right before AE came out). I had to carry nothing but blues with me on a build designed to have as my endurnace as possible and I still crashed by end bar often.

iPowers - I would advise for you to take a look at them, to help on your choices now.

I have had to post this summary so many times, I copied it to a notepad document. Here is my postion on using the Lockdown proc in controller single target holds that also do damage . . .

Quote:
Lockdown +2 Mag proc in a controller's Single Target Hold: Let's use a little bit of reasoning to decide if it is worth a slot. A controller's single target hold (STH) will hold minions and lieutenants in one shot, and has a 20% chance to hold a boss on its own, if it hits. Accuracy varies, so even if we assume you are at the 95% level, you have to factor that in. So if that proc fires, it will do nothing at all unless it happens to fire on the 80% of bosses who were not held by the STH on its own. The proc only fires off 15% of the time. And Bosses are, guessing, maybe 20% of the overall population of foes (The actual number is, I believe, lower than that). So if we do the simple math: 20% of population, times 80% of the bosses not held, times 95% chance to hit, times 15% chance to hit equals 2.28%. So the Lockdown proc will have any effect whatsoever only 2.28% of the time. It looks like it is having a lot more effect that that small percentage because if the proc hits on a foe already held, it adds its tesla cage animation to the already-held foe including bosses who were held by the 20% overpower. But it has accomplished nothing. And don't forget that the 2.28% is based upon assumptions that are most likely higher than reality . . . so the actual number may be less.
.
So the question is whether a proc that has an effect 2.28% of the time is worth a slot. Compare this to slotting for damage or hold, where it hits ALL THE TIME. At level 50, my preferred slotting for most STHs is 4 Baz Gaze, an Acc/Dam Hami-O and a common Damage IO. But if you don't care about damage, you could go with 4 Baz Gaze and an Acc/Mez Hami-O. Mids actually shows that using two damage procs will average more damage, but I prefer the sure thing rather than a "chance for" damage.
.
That Lockdown proc has it uses. It is great in Choking Cloud or Poison Gas Trap or other low mag hold powers where stacking mag will allow the power to hit foes it could not otherwise hit. But not in a Single Target Hold.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

While I personally would slot for damage, either something along the lines mentioned (or for my favorites I'm liable to 5 Apocalypse and 1 Unbreakable Constraint using both chance for damage procs) I'm not sure I totally agree with Local Mans calculations at least so far as that first 20% of the population figure/assumption. No matter what percent of the population are composed of bosses they are pretty much going to approach 100% of what I'm likely to be using Char (or Fossilize etc.) on. That is as I approach the spawn I'm not looking to toss Char at the minions or Lts, but at a boss. The only real exceptions are going to be annoying (or dangerous) minions or Lts such as Sappers. The basic reason I don't use the Lockdown proc is not so much that it gives me a second chance to "overpower" it's that about 2 to 4 seconds later that same boss is also about 100% likely to get targeted by another of my Holds even if he was overpowered by the first.

Heh, an interesting discussion to be sure.

I have Chance to Hold in Fire Blast, Ring of Fire & Fire Cages as well as Char.

I tend to agree also that Char is for bosses and getting them locked down quick. I've slotted Char for damage anyway. If it's still choking after 20 seconds, then it's a) lucky to be alive because I forgot about it, or b) still choking/jangling due to another proc that's been fired.

Buzzsaw is right as a name for this build though. In terms of control, with so much recharge, my main controls are Cinders and Flashfires with a dash of Freezing rain and Fireball.

In terms of keeping End use under control, I've found it really important to carefully slot your attacks for End reduction as much as possible. Cardiac was a breath of fresh air!

Also, with regard to Freezing Rain, I have End redux in that rather than recharge. It costs a whopping 18 to cast so having it come back faster only means it's costing me more End. Either my enemies are dead, or I'm dead inside 20 seconds, so having it available again 'aint much help. By the time I've moved on to the second group, it's recharged. On groups, against AVs and the like, I can keep it perma.

I still need to tweak this (yet again) to remove the +Def from Steamy Mist (I don't need it) but I'm not sure how to improve on it as there isn't really much that I can't do with it.

Of course the nice thing about Freezing Rain is that in can stack. In ideal circumstances (see my guide for a greater explanation of Freezing Rain's "bug" and why ideal circumstances are almost never met) with enough recharge you can hit 90% -resistance. It's because of this stacking that recharge in Freezing Rain is so valuable. Of course, if you don't have the endurance to do it, or your play style brings you up against few enemies that are long fights, which it sounds like may be true for you, then being able to stack FR isn't particularly useful.

That's a really good guide Draggynn. Time to get it posted up I think

It's funny how you learn something new every day - now I just have to decide whether I want to have fun enjoying watching hard targets burn for longer, or whether to put recharge in FR and make them burn quicker...

Pulled the proc in Char and the +Def in Mist to give me 2 more slots in FR. A couple of +5 End/Recharge def debuff IOs has the recharge down to 16 seconds which is 5 more seconds of overlap.

Heh... Is it worth it? Not sure anyone could say for sure and depends, as you say, on playstyle. Most of my "hard" targets are AVs/EBs in iTrials/50 TFs where I'm on a team and melting stuff anyway. Solo - the worst I face is Bosses who spend most of their time holding their throats.

Interesting thoughts though.

Thanks! Still one more section to go, revisions, and then it will finally get posted in the guides section.

Let me throw a bit of a kink in your thinking and give you my build.

I went spiritual with mine and slotted for massive recharge. The secret is NOT to attack as fast as you can. You don't need to. There's lots of single target and AoE damage flying around you the recharge is to make sure that you keep every thing perma-stunned.

Open with Smoke (Smoke + your other defenses = softcapped S/L defense even against +4s) Flashfires to stun everything but bosses, jump in the middle and follow up with Thunderclap, everything should be stunned now including bosses. Throw in Fire Cages to prevent mob wander, then drop a Tornado and a Lightening Storm. Cycle Thunderclap every time it's up and every thing stays stunned and just stand there and melt stuff.

You get damage from Imps, LS, Nado, Hot Feet, and you can toss in the occasional Fissure for AoE damage and Char and Seismic Smash for single target damage AND control.

If you get in trouble you can Phase and/or use Earth's Embrace.

Prior to getting the purple sets I just relied on the Base recovery buff from my SG base. I kept a stash of the appropriate salvage in my base, in my vault, and in my market slots. I usually went through the base at least once an hour and could easily stop for a few seconds to refresh before heading out to the next mission. I never really had massive endurance problems (you can turn off Steamy and Maneuvers after you have the spawn perma stunned to conserve end if you want. I never really found it necessary to do so)

So here's an update as to what I'm actually running with based on your suggestions.
Also my thoughts on changing things up a bit due to what I use and what I don't use.

Now I am only 47 (she's only a couple days old) but I have put all but the purples in and am running TF's, TOTs, and regular Peregrine content.

The TOT's were made for the Chaos that is Fire/Storm. Simply because I can go crazy without having to monitor my KB's etc...

Toggles running: Fire Shield, Hot Feet, Hover, Steamy Mist, Hurricane(selectively when I need to position mobs or when fighting an EB/AV)

Imps Summoned

Rotation: Flashfire, Fire Cages, Fireball, move in for Hot Feet, Snow Storm on chosen anchor while running in, Freezing Rain, Fire Cages again, Thunderclap, Lightning Storm, Tornado, Fire Cages (or Char on stubborn ones) - Everything that isn't a Boss is dead now.

If Flashfire is on CD I'll run in and Cinders and I tend to use Cinders as an O-Crap I'm being hit too much button...

I wont get into my boss rotation. Not really relevent for this discussion.

Now if you remember from above I do NOT have any of the Purples that provide 4% Recover x5(Grav Anchor, Abso Amaz, Unbrk Const, Ragna, Armaged)

End usage: Fair to Middlen
I rarely have to use blues with what I have slotted right now and only on really long drawn out fights. Which I assume will be addressed with the Purples.

I use Hurricane as a -to hit/+def buff on any mob that's Orange or better.

I love pushing a group into a corner and just unloading all of my aoe's along with Hurricane and Hot Feet.

I am hit rather easily- and mobs that are outside my aoe radius can hit me pretty much at will but the damage is manageable due to high Resistence.
I still don't like it. (I'm spoiled by my fire/kin and my Elec/SD)

I do not as of yet utilize Consume as much as I would like.
1. I don't seem to need it with a healthy amount of blues on me(which I don't use that much of anyways)
2. When I do use it with a large group I can definitely go non-stop for the entire duration and even tend to use my abilities to the point of Overkill

Things that irritate me so far:

No heal = sucks
No Pet heal = super sucks
Ghost Widow owns my azz = no mez prot extra super sucks
Solo play and getting hit as easily as I do = I should be following a tank around.
Superspeed is not necessary = Steamy Mist and Sprint are fine for invis.
Rise of the Phoenix = Not really looking forward to it as I don't think I'll be using it.(but it holds a nice 4% to recovery) I will try it out and see if I die enough to appreciate it.

You will notice that Recharge is not on this list - I have more crap available to me to use at any given moment that I rarely (if ever) have to worry about waiting on skills to reload.

I can have 2 LS out, TC, FF, and Tornado are perma, 10 sec of double FR(could be better...ya I know)

I have been a career soloist for as long as I have played the game and usually build my toons accordingly - this time I didn't softcap def as i usually do and am learning what it's like to play a teaming toon.

Teleport Pool: I love it. Plain and simple I love TP, Recall, and LRT. And since I am getting rid of Superspeed at some point I will have room for one of those LotG holders that might help out the double FR + perhaps some Mez Res/Prot

Overall - Super fun...moreso than even my fire/kin. My kin is purpled to the gills and is damn near untouchable but I have to say the fire/storm is my fav so far.

My frustrations can be addressed or play style modified to accomodate it's quirks.

The build below has a few modifications from the Second build I posted above.

Including:
Replace the LD Hold proc with Thunderstrike for some Acc Dam and Rchg(+2% rec but lose proc and +3% dam all)

Went through and replaced a few of the +Range and + Immob/Disorient that I was in the Red on with +Acc and +EndRedx.

I decided to keep what I had in the Health Slot since the 2 Miracle's still provide 2.5% End Rec

This build does not include changes based on my irritations noted above...i still have to think about it but I am leaning towards the Earth or Ice APP(as suggested by nearly every one of you :P )

The input from the lot of you is bordering on amazing and I can't wait to see what you all come up with next.

Query: If I removed the Procs from Fire Cages, Fireball, and Lightning Storm, than replaced the Devastation in LS with another Thunderstrike...than picked up Smoke and tossed 3 Dampened Spirits in there(yay more +End).

How much Actual protection will smoke provide me with and without Hurricane?

In MID's it shows Hurricane's stats/effects as

Hurricane = -47.26%(-30) <-- wtf is the -30?... It says Critters in Parentheses in the description but I thought the devs used "Critters" to describe regular mobs/monsters/killable NPC's...etc - therefore if -30 is critter than what is the -47.26 for if not the critters?

Smoke = -7.71%(-5)<-- there's another random # tacked onto the end with no explanation other than Critters...

I'm a touch confused, help!
