Crashing....Game out of memory?
What is this? I keep getting blasted with this statement: "game has run out of memory and must shut down".
When did this start and how can I get rid of it? It didn't happen a week ago and now it happens every hour or there about..... Anyone else seeing this? |

What spec is your PC? How much RAM do you have? What OS are you running and is it 32 or 64-bit? Are you running other stuff in the background? Have you got the Launcher set to Quit after the game is launched?

Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
3.00GB Ram
Windows Vista 32 Bit Operating System
No
Yes(Have tried both ways)
The game client has been leaking memory like a steel sieve for years now. Garbage collection and memory releasing by the game client is either broken or non-existent by this point. The game client is behaving as if memory were an infinite resource as opposed to being a renewable resource which requires "recycling" in order to comply with the "renewable" part of the concept. Needless to say, RAM is *NOT* an "infinite" resource and can be used up ... very quickly with many of the Ultra Mode graphics options dialed up full blast, even if your graphics card is capable of supporting the computations at the speed necessary to do them.

Strange....played the game for 5 years and never saw this message or type of crash before.
Is there anything I can do besides sitting, waiting til it happens again? I do try to take advantage of whatever graphics my gts 250 (1gb) card allows and would rather not knock them into the dirt if at all possible.
Just wondering, but how long does it take for the game to crash when you have the launcher running, and when you have the launcher *closed* (not even sat in the task bar)?
I ask this, as i actually havent suffered this problem yet (have had others at one time or another, but not this one specifically)

one possible causes probably. I will say though, that the phasing tech is suspicious,
particularly in First Ward.
I really like the Shadowed Paths, but I've learned very quickly to never step foot into one,
because they will guarantee an out of memory crash in the next ten minutes for me
if I do, no matter what I do afterwards. If I avoid them like the plague, I can do whatever
I want in that zone and nothing bad happens client-side. If I start to phase into one though,
I may as well shut down and restart the client then and there, because it'll force it on me
shortly anyway.
AP too has been the subject of crashing for me, but I'm less certain about what the cause
may be there, with the drastic zone overhaul and all. But that's one thing you may try
avoiding and see if you get any difference.

I can't say for sure, since with how well-known the problem is, there're about a million and

I do only have 3GB of ram, so I spose it can bleed dry quickly? My card has 1gb but again, total of 3gb's+1gb card seems low by today's standards lol.
Maybe it will work itself out while I'm at work over this weekend and unable to play....

Apart from going to the x64 version and adding more RAM, there are not many options. So I elected to create another user on my system and when I start my computer, I use that minimalist profile. It greatly helps with the game but quite honestly, the problem is memory MISMANAGEMENT (sigh)

Just happened to me today. First time I've played since the game became "City of Heroes Freedom."
Trying to level up powers at the time. Shortly before the crash, I had begun to notice the UI randomly flickering off and on rapidly. Not consistently, but usually around the time I had used several powers, just like the UI was being turned off and back on again really quick one time. Then it was normal for a few more power uses, then flickered again.
Now, right after "Going Rogue" came out, the UI flicker started happening and apparently has continued ever since. The only difference is that in the times I had played before the release of Freedom, the flickering would signify that the game was about to start slowing down to a slide show. After Freedom, it apparently means I'm about to crash.
This only started after the Ultra graphics update. With Going Rogue, I could just turn off pretty much all the Ultra enhancements and run normally for a while longer before the slowdown, so I'm guessing I could do the same now with it crashing. That does kind of defeat the purpose of having the Ultra mode options in the game though.
As a side note, the slow down was the reason I quit playing for several months, got tired of it and the fact it was never fixed.
