Game locks talking to trainers, changing Graphics Quality slider

Background:
Played this game through 4 video cards now. Last card was a nvidia GTX 285. Around June of 2010 newer nvidia drivers caused the game to be unable to login in Ultra Mode. Downgrade back to those drivers from June-ish 2010 game worked fine in Ultra Mode. Tried new driver releases as they were released and could never log into the game with Ultra Mode enabled. After trying 280.26 I decided to upgrade.

Now have a GTX 560 (not a Ti). Again same problem. Disable Ultra Mode and can login but now I am at Low Character quality. Trying to turn on Ultra locks cityofheroes.exe. sigh...

Here is the kicker. I can run at desktop resolution and fart around in game. But if I do one of these things:
* Talk to a trainer
* Talk to a Origin Vender: Like Penny in Founders
* Target a player and click Actions>Info
* Try to adjust the Graphics Quality slider in Options>Graphics tab
cityofheroes.exe locks up and becomes "Not Responding" in Task Manager. Ultra mode is not even being used at this time. It's default yucko graphics. This EVEN happens in SAFE MODE!

I do not have the ability to resort to "older" drivers because the card/gpu is relatively new. The June-ish drivers I was using on the 285 do not support the GPU.

Borderlands lasted 4 hours straight gameplay last weekend with no problems. Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 played for 1.5 hours with no problem. Diablo 2 (ha!) worked fine as well. This cannot be a temperature issue due to the games above working and I have a toon logged out at Citadel in Talos. I log that toon in and as SOON as I click on Citadel the game locks.

I do not have the EVGA Precision software running at the time. No overclocking has been set. Used Driver Sweeper twice to remove all the nvidia drivers (and it got rid of my June-ish drivers too so I don't remember the exact version number) and reinstall 280.26 clean.

Contacted support and doing the email back and forth thing with suggestions/results.
Any ideas? next posts have the obligatory system info stuff.

Should add that I had two monitors connected to the GTX 285. Worked fine with the June-ish drivers. Have the same two monitors connected to the GTX 560 which is why I think the graphics card shows up twice in the reports.

*does the big watering puppy dog eyes*

No suggestions?

Well I tried some other things:
* Went to Control Panel> Programs and removed ALL nvidia software/drivers
* Rebooted several times during process above
* Used Driver Sweeper to remove ALL AMD(never had a AMD/ATI card ever!) and nvidia drivers including chipset (cause this is an Intel chipset).
* Reboot again
* Installed nvidia driver set 280.26 with a custom install selecting only the Driver and PhysX options.
* Reboot

Clean nvidia driver install and log into Talos in SAFE MODE (have a toon parked at Citadel) and click on Citadel and lockup. ARGH!

Then I try something radical:
* I shut down and pull out the GTX 560.
* I place a 9800 GTX in the machine.
* Boot the machine and wait for the driver to detect the correct card.
* Reboot after detect finds the right card
* Nice desktop and both monitors driven by the 9800 GTX.

Start up COH in SAFE MODE, log in Talos, click Citadel and LOCK UP!!!

ARGH!!!! Trying something else... be back soon...

Wait, do you have RIVA Tuner or MSI Afterburner installed?

If so, the stats server thingy needs to be not running when you change the settings (or at least have the "application detection level" set to None.

There was an alternate thread about this a while ago (about to head to bed so not searching for it).

If you are running it, remember you can *always* start the game up with Afterburner/Rivatuner not running, change settings, and then start up afterburner with no issues afterwards.

Hi Goober, I hope this might help.
I had a similar problem to what you are experiencing and here's what I did.
Grab yourself a free copy of Driver Cleaner Pro. You can just google it and get a tonne of hits. Uninstall all your Nvidia stuff through control panel and that goes for everything, stereo, wdm, 3d drivers, physx etc. Reboot for good measure and run driver cleaner. Ask it to delete everything it can find related to Nvidia. Reboot and reinstall your nvidia drivers.

This should give you a nice clean driver install and hopefully solve your problem. Will check back later to see how you went.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not installed RIVA Tuner or MSI Afterburner. I uninstalled the EVGA Precision software that came with the GTX 560. I only started it once and saw it logs info about the card and decided it was not needed. It never ran again and it was uninstalled.

I've been using Driver Sweeper and I found out that although it finds stuff it does not always "clean" it.

Here's what I did:

I put my old 9800 GTX in the system with the 280.26 drivers loaded.
COH locked up clickingon Citadel in Talos.

I use Driver Sweeper again to clean up the drivers.
Rebooted and What The Fudge! The 9800 GTX was found and drivers were loaded. I thought Driver Sweeper cleaned up the drivers... Somehow version 270.61 was loaded. That did not happen the several time before using driver sweeper. However the GTX 560 is not supported by those drivers thus they were not loading. I thought Driver Sweeper removed those drivers but it did not. Lesson learned.

I uninstalled 270.61 and rebooted and tried Driver Sweeper again. It found some stuff and I told it to clean it and it did NOT!

Found stuff like this still on the drive:

So after cleaning up manually I rebooted and again the 9800 GTX was found and drivers were being loaded. 266.58 was loaded this time. What the Fudge!

Found that Autoupdate was turned on and was probably done by the Windows 7 SP1 update. Turned off Autoupdate and manual cleaning done again. Reboot.

This time the 9800 GTX was found but the driver install failed. Windows told me to turn on Autoupdate and check again so the driver install would not fail. No way!

I created a restore point here.

Then I installed 280.26 thinking I had a good clean machine to install the new drivers.
Logged into Talos in SAFE MODE, click on Citadel and LOCK UP!!!

Uninstall 280.26 and reboot. Install 257.21 from June of 2010. Reboot.
Logged into Talos in SAFE MODE, click on Citadel and OH SH... wait... I see his face and he's telling me I need more in my team. Log off and power off.

Remove 9800 GTX and place GTX 285 in system. Boot up, log into Talos SAFE MODE and click on Citadel and he still wonders why I don't have enough member in my team.

Log out and log back in normal mode and change resolution to desktop. Log out and back in and move the Graphics Quality slider from minimum and experience a HUGE 3 second pause but no LOCK UP!!! Yay?

I experience heavy game pausing at these point that lock up on the GTX 560:
Talking to trainers
Talking to origin venders
Targeting a player and clicking Action>Info
Sliding Graphics Quality slider.

So the problem is not resolved. I have a new video card that will NOT work with the drivers that allow the game to play because those drivers were released before those cards existed. So this is not a resolved issue.

There is something about the driver sets above 257.21 and I'm not sure how to find what the difference is.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Just to really wind you up (you are going to hate me for this), I have a GTX560 (non Ti version) and i dont have the same problem as you (running the most up to date drivers from the Nvidia website)

And FYI *any* driver removal tool should generally be ran in safe mode. This is to ensure that there are no file locks on the driver files.

Hi again Goober.
I read all your progress so far and two things came to mind. One was that you are using driver sweeper. I have never used that so I am not sure what it's like. I have been using Driver Cleaner Pro and I am hoping that you might give that a go.

Second one is a bit more scary. What power supply are you using? Can you tell me in basic watts and a brand name? Eg. Antech true power 650 watt etc? Reason I ask is because your machine is exhibiting behavior to that of a power supply that is faulty or cannot supply enough power to your video card. Some supplies can do this with age but most just flat out die with no warning at all.

Also, what other stuff are you running in your machine? Fans, Hard drives, USB peripherals etc. Just trying to narrow this down for you a bit. Will check back when i get home from work.

EDIT: Never mind telling me about what else you are running as i saw what I was after in your earlier post. One other thing springs to mind. Have you tried disabling your sound card in device manager and starting the game to see what happens? I know it sounds silly but I have seen creative cards do this from time to time too. Definately worth a look before you put too much blame on the video card.

Thanks for the suggestion Jeripop. I disabled the sound card via Device Manager and installed 280.26 drivers. Started COH and was stuck at the loading screen because I had Ultra Mode enabled again with the old drivers.

Restarted COH in safe mode and logged in. Found yet another way to lock up COH and this was just by opening the Contacts window. So disabling the sound card did not work.

I have an Antec 850W powersupply.

I don't blame the video card. With the 280.26 drivers loaded the 9800GTX, GTX 285 and GTX 560 all have the exact same problem in COH. WIth 275.21 the 9800GTX and GTX 285 work and the GTX 560 does not because that driver set does not support it.

The new lock up with the contact window leads me further to believe there is something wrong with the install on my machine. Evidently many others can use the new drivers but on my machine I can't. I have not been able to do this since June 2010 with the 285. I even left the game for about 5 months and came back recently and had to install new and still have the same problem. I thought getting the new 560 would fix it but it did not. Since I came back I've also run the file verification three times.

Before I tried your suggestion I noticed there were some contact in the list that did not show their portrait. Doc Delilah was one of them. I tried your suggestion and then went back to the 275.21 drivers. Now Doc Delilah's portrait is there but others that were working are now missing...

Right now Gordon Bower, Mercedes Sheldon, Tobias Hansen and Fareed Abdullah no longer show their portraits.

Also the first time the contacts windows/tab load takes about a full minute to populate.

I am reluctant to suggest this, as it is a mixed bag. When it works, it works fine. But when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong. (Fortunately, that is rarely.)

So try the following at your own risk!

Uninstall your drivers through control panel. Reboot into safe mode. Run Driver Sweeper (or another cleaner of your choice). Run a registry cleaner of your choice. (I use CCleaner myself) [--THIS is where it will go wrong, if it does--] Reboot and install your drivers of choice.

If this doesn't work, the only other thing I have is a complete clean install of your OS...

Goob, I hate to ask this, but have you tried disconnecting your second monitor completely from the video card?

I can't remember the specifics, but I recall there was a problem once with two monitors attached and I "think" it was with nVidia cards and drivers.

EDIT: Further addition to the remembered problem. If I remember things right, other apps and games were not affected, it was either only OpenGL games or only CoH.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Good suggestion TJ. I tried it. Now I can't even get safe mode to login. I still have the 285 card in the system and updated to 280.26. Now safe mode just hangs at the loading screen. I am unable to login at all.

I am debating a system wipe and reinstall new. I don't like that idea but I feel I am starting to run out of options.

FYI... I love sysinternals and always learn new stuff using those utilities. Procexp is a fav of mine and I found something using it that does not seem to be a good thing. I don't know much about the stack but I found this with procexp:

misaligned_access does not sound good...

I found this by clicking on the cityofheroes.exe process that was using 1.1GB of ram and selecting properties. On the Threads tab there were several "TID"'s listed which I am not familiar. I clicked on the Stack button on the one TID that was highlighted by default and the output above is what I saw.

I plugged the second monitor back in and still cannot get past the loading screen in safe mode. ARGH!!!

This may sound silly as well. When you unplugged the second monitor did you go into the nVidia control panel and set it to use a single monitor?

Yeah, it sounds silly, but at this point I'm almost grasping at straws.

I'm also wondering about the Portrait Displays services and programs and the eDisplay Management program. I know that they are likely programs that came with your monitors, but I'm wondering if they are doing something that could be interfering with the game, much like what the EVGA Precision Tool and Riva Tuner programs did.

Purely hypothetical when looking at those programs, but since it's something I don't normally see in HJT reports, I get curious.

A good test would be to shut off all non-essential services and background programs, then see if the problems are resolved.

Try this:

Go to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\NCSoft and deleting everything you find in that directory.

Then retry City of Heroes. You will probably have to redo your game settings, if this works, but you should be able to log in.

TJ,

You are correct that those are little applet like thingies (that's a technical term) that came with the monitors. I did make sure the nvidia card only saw one monitor.

I'm going with Morgan's suggestion now because I realized I have a drive sitting around and I can install win7 on it as a "fresh" install and keep the original drives unplugged and in a "good" state.

Starcloud's suggestion will come soon I believe.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I appreciate the attempts because you guys are hitting things I haven't done yet.

ugh! I fixed the lockups in safe mode... And not the way I wanted.

New install of Win7 with nvidia 280.26 drivers, intel chipset and sound card drivers and POOF!!! Issues gone...

I really didn't want to do that but hey! Clean install of Windows now!

I know too well the agony of clean installs and having to reinstall all of your software, get all of your settings just the way you had them previously, etc.

But, I'm glad you got it sorted out before Freedom hits.

I am glad too... now that I think about it I probably should have just done the reinstall from the start.

This was a clean install of Windows XP 64 back in like 2005 that has been patched/upgraded to Vista 64 and then finally to Windows 7 64. And its been through about 4 nvidia cards, two motherboards and several harddrives. ;-)

Yeah, well past time for a clean install.

I've been having similar issues. At first the game wouldn't even load for me. I was using version 270.61 nVidia drivers on my 8800 GTS 512. I then reverted to 197.45 (as suggested in several threads throughout this board). That allowed me to load into safe mode and adjust several graphics settings. I play at 1280x1024, no FSAA, AO off, shadows/reflections off, cha/world detail at 100% and things run very smoothly.

The main issue I have now is that after I've been playing for a while the game will lock up when I click on a contact, trainer, or even an NPC that must be spoken to inside a mission. For example, in the mission for TwinShot when you must click on Manticore at the end, the game will lock up.

At that point I need to use Task Manager to end the CityofHeroes.exe process and then restart the game. Once I am back in I can speak to contacts, trainers, etc. for a while before the game will begin locking up again.

Since it only happens after some time has passed, it seems as if it might be indicative of a memory issue. Also, I've noticed that it is specifically an issue of 2D dialog boxes or menu boxes popping in. The border draws in, with the fill color, but no contents (ie no text, no picture, no response choices, etc) and then everything freezes.

Are there any suggestions for how to remedy this issue? Are there settings in the nVidia control panel that could potentially alleviate the problem?

Do you have the NCSoft Launcher set to close once it launches the game? There are reports of memory leaks with leaving the Launcher running in the background.

Something else you could try would be to regularly type /unloadgfx or /reloadgfx in the chatbox.

Goob, this sounds like EXACTLY my problem, only I don't think I will be able to re-install windows as I don't have a copy of Windows to re-install.
