I was recently thinking that I cannot recall a complete core show cast from the 60s, possibly even from the 50s (maybe Your Show of Shows?), that has enjoyed such continued success since the end of their signature performance.

Nimoy, Shatner, and Doohan all had successful other series (okay, Doohan's was a kid's space series, but it was fun) all of them have had many and notable guest appearances on other shows, some have had significant reoccurring guest appearances (Koenig on B5, Takei on Heroes). And that does not include their conventions, voice acting, books, audio books, documentary narration, etc. Nor does it include their additional Star Trek work, which was significant for Majel Barrett.

Also..."The Squire of Gothos" was a first season show. Its premier date was also mine.

It's heartening to see a show about a philandering starship captain could be so beloved and successful over the years.

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

I share a premier with an episode as well..

"The Gamesters of Triskelion" is a second season episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, first broadcast January 5, 1968 and repeated May 3, 1968. It is episode #45, production #46, written by Margaret Armen, and directed by Gene Nelson.

Overview: Captain Kirk and his companions are sent to fight as gladiators for the gambling entertainment of three disembodied beings.

I suspect that's at least part of the reason why we're still talking about Star Trek 45 years later.

I recently re-watched the entire series on Netflix. Good stuff. Found out that after all the numerous viewings of the series I've had over the years, I still hadn't seen the very last episode (and it was the only episode I hadn't seen, the rest having been seen by me at least twice each).

The other thing I discovered watching the old series again, is that I really miss the miniskirt Starfleet uniforms.

And yet there is a tragic side to this story of a long lived and beloved universe. The fact that Paramount insists on charging twice as much for a single season of a 45 year old series as anybody does for a new season of of an ongoing series. Right now I can get Chuck seasons 1-3 together for less than season 1 of STTOS.

One could probably argue the point that a season of TOS, even 45 years later, is actually WORTH more than several combined seasons of many other shows. I'm not knocking Chuck specifically, but it's pretty obvious the existance of TOS laid the groundwork for most space-based sci-fi that that has come since it first aired.

Let me put it this way: I've seen just about every episode of every Star Trek series ever produced but the only DVD box sets of those series I've bothered to buy so far have been the TOS sets.

As demonstrated here, the price of things are less dictated by how much they cost to make, and more to do with how much people are willing to pay.
That's why everything is more expensive in cities and everything is cheaper in [insert country here].
People are prepared to pay more for Star Trek than Chuck, so Star Trek gets a bigger price tag and Chuck gets a smaller one.

The last episode: the one with the body swap with Janet Lister? Not exactly a strong story to go out on, though I get that they were trying to teach '60's folk about the evils of glass ceilings and all.

Actually I just saw the complete, restored-color "The Cage", the original pilot with Captain Pike. I'd seen portions, but never the whole until now. What struck me, almost like a slap in the face, was Pike's heavily chauvinistic attitude toward the women of his crew. Clearly Roddenberry intended to teach right from the start. It was probably much more eye-popping nowadays, when we've grown to understand more. Curious that the series begins and ends with episodes expressing how inappropriate it is to hold back a person based on gender.
