The Determinator

Did I read the above statement correctly, that global bonuses from IOs/sets help temp powers?

If so, I may be convinced to roll up a Determinator of my own. (I'm paranoid about missing.)

Icy_J, I play on Virtue pretty much exclusively, and my global handle is my forum name if you want to add me.

I do believe outside bonuses and set bonuses affect temp powers. It just didn't come to me as I was making this character, so I actually expected this to be a lot harder.

I can also attest that skill helps as well. Using just my wits and the temporary powers I had, I was able to solo an accidentally aggro'd mob set for a 5-member team with cautious use of smoke flash, stun grenade, and pool powers.

Not a prob for me, I usually have dormant mains with lots of inf lying so the inf is not so bad ( I spent to close to 50 mil on regular IOs for one of my 50 toons.)

The only problem I see is the availability of the recipes. (Virtue is also my home server) so maybe If I do use recipes I should be very prudent with their usage.

For instance like you said, I'll will get a bunch of power pools sets to fill in the attack chain and use the temps when this gets hairy or for tough fights. Yeah...that can help lower the inf cost.

I am definitely up to this challenge also. (Glad to see others join in). Maybe if we see each when servers come up we can team up for fun.

Should be interesting and fun to say the least.

Another alternative to temp powers, when a toon gets to 20+ we can go to Ouroboros and

repeat missions for the temps powers received from those missions. That can also cut the info cost too!

I had to cut today a little short, because I have housework to do. I only got to level 14, which is high enough to get Tough, slot DOs, and run out of temporary powers. No teams today, oddly enough. I'm also running out of funds, so I might have to skip a day or two to disregard leveling and acquire money (points for reference). I have to say, after getting DOs, my survivability doubled and my pool powers also seem to do a tiny bit more damage. Despite all of these improvements, Stun Grenade and Smoke Flash are still my saviors, as mobs are becoming stronger and more abundant.

Also, special shout out to Rappa Eaze, who is a petless Mastermind inspired by my challenge.

Back in issue 5 I attempted to make a scrapper alt with a "pure" super speedster build. I followed pretty much the same rules as your challenge: I could only use power pool attacks (and, since this was before veteran rewards, I think I allowed myself to use the first attack from Martial Arts).

I made it to the Hollows and could not get him any further. Then I deleted and rerolled him as a rad/thermal corruptor when CoV hit.

No update for today. I'm gonna use my time to gather up some more money to fund this challenge.

Although I will half-necro this thread so it takes on the first page.

In other news, I did get lucky with temporary power recipe drops on my other characters, so less of those that I have to buy!

Well, it's about 8:30 am in my area. I got some homecooked breakfast, and a nice helping of Determination. Time to start up!

My goal for today is to just make up for lost progress. I have recipes, but I don't have salvage, but I do have money.

As a side note, I might make an all-Determinator SG if enough people get involved...

After crafting my usual temporary powers, noting the dramatic decrease in price for a lot of things that I need (recipes, salvage, etc.), I headed out to finish my Midnighter arc. Threw on LFG, and posted in the Virtue LFG Beta channel using a different message from usual.

"Level 14 Determinator lft, blueside"

Now, I figured that enough people have seen this thread to know what that means, or that nobody really cared, but I got some tells of interest, people asking what I meant, and a lot of positive replies. It made me giddy.

Minutes later, someone was advertising for a Positron Part 1. Great! I can join this TF I've never done before on a concept I've never done before. It'll prove to be an interesting experience.

So I joined the team, and chatted out my usual forewarnings of my gimpiness. No one seemed to care, so that was great. Team makeup was wonderful.

Throughout the TF, everything went very smoothly, and I felt like a shining beacon to my team, showing that a little determination is enough to succeed, which was great, because of another surprise...

In this team, there were two people in it that were new to the game! For one, this was their first team, and for the other, their first controller. As you can imagine, the former was bewildered by the speed of the XP gain, and by my Handing of Grenades, and Jumping of Kicks. I had to explain everything to him, welcome him to the game, and explain to him that City of Heroes is a team-oriented game that you can play with your friends and still succeed doing whatever you want. I started to begin to feel like a true hero and veteran for the first time in a few years, rather than a cringy old man (note: not an old man) who can't stop playing the same game.

Cue Shadow Simulacrums, and more bewilderment. The two new players were confounded that my double was a Martial Arts scrapper, when I myself hit things with a bat and a sledgehammer. I had to explain the limitations of the Doppleganger system, but believe that the darn thing was psychic.

All in all, it was a very fun TF, and that's story-wise, team-wise, and character-wise. I got to level 17, but had to cut it short because a friend of mine wants me to play another character. Things are looking up!

Don't forget Faultline (for the Clockwork Pet), Croatoa (for the Sword and Bow temp powers), and LOTS of Safeguards, hoping you'll get the temp power side mission .

Oh and I'd be interested how you get on with the Vahzilok Plague mission if you decide to run it at the appropriate level!

This sounds like a lot of fun. Like seeing tattoos on other people, they look nice but I wouldn't necessarily want one myself. When Freedom hits and I'm tempted to roll more alts, I may venture on to Virtue and check out the toon.

Are there any other 'challenges' apart from Iron Man/Woman / Determinator builds?

Yikes! No updates all weekend! Sorry guys, I've been REALLY busy, and I haven't had time to Determinate (Yes, I just made that up) some baddies. If I can find some time today, then I'll do an official update
