Discussion: Art of First Ward Dev Diaries on PC Gamer

Balanced

First Ward is one of the most aesthetically diverse zones in City of Heroes: A ruined city ripped apart by the Praetorian Hamidon, skyscrapers half-sunken and locked in the grip of petrified tentacles; pockets of still-habitable urban areas maintained by survivors; alleyways where magic flows; lush wetlands and barren crags; and an ominous hospital are just some of the areas you'll encounter. The inhabitants of the city are equally as diverse...and some of them command as much presence as First Ward itself.

In these two exclusive Developer Diaries from PC Gamer, City of Heroes Art Lead Gilbert "El Topo" Martinez gives you a look at the art and design behind First Ward, and the giant monsters that still lurk there.

They certainly did a great job with the GM's. I havent done much in First Ward but I did go there just to fly around the Seed (until it swatted me like an insect).

Agreed. I've been spending the last few days there testing the new enemies and missions, and it's a beautiful zone with really strong content.

I think my favorite part of First Ward is when you enter a Shadowed Path and look up to see shooting stars streaking across the sky.

I think that the mention of levees, plus the coastal setting, as well as the voodoo vibe in parts of First Ward are more clues to Praetoria City being in the New Orleans area - which fits with Anti-matter's reactors powering the whole East Coast, and with the route of the Hamidon coming up from South America and going through Mexico before it was stopped by Tyrant.

The concept art for the hospital has been around for a very, very, very long time.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

First Ward is awesome. It also feels a lot more balanced than the rest of Praetoria. Either that or Beam Rifle is just that good

Loved it. Love the design, love the flavour, love how much character it has as a zone.

Now if only all the zones were this good

The Devouring Earth would have to have done some major restructuring of the local geology to have "dusty, barren...Crags" anywhere near New Orleans. The highest elevation in the whole state is about 535 feet above sea level, and that's nearly 300 miles away from the city. The terrain around New Orleans is more like swamp, river, swamp, lake, swamp, same river, lots of swamp, lake, swamp, big lake.

I'm not saying it's impossible, since weird rock formations seem to be part of the DE's schtick, but "dry and rocky" are not descriptions that spring readily to mind when contemplating New Orleans.

That said, I like the look of the zone, and the Seed works. I'm not sold on the Avatar yet. Big shoulders are so Eighties.

The Way of the Corruptor (Arc ID 49834): Hey villains! Do something for yourself for a change--like twisting the elements to your will. All that's standing in your way are a few secret societies...and Champions of the four elements.

These are the kinds of things I like to read, rather then bland PR puff pieces.

I'm never going to understand why you guys don't just package up a large design
materials/story bible book and sell it to us, though. Collectables are
good money, and you've got so much fertile material for them in this property
that you never take advantage of anymore.

Those are pretty cool.

Hmmm... what do the Failed Seer bosses look like, then? Sounds creepy.

I agree! And let's not forget the Freem shirts - I somehow didn't get one at Comic Con '08, and I still haven't forgiven myself.
