I heard they were trying to balance out the rewards for doing trials, how well did they do on that?

We talking

Taskforces and trials

or

the incarnate XP on Incarnate trials?

I'm sorry I should've been more specific.

I meant the rewards for completeing incarnate trials.

The incarnate xp issue has been fixed, and the fix fixed (the first spread the iXP around equally but lessened it, the second boosted it back up to where it was supposed to be).

Are the commons, uncommons, rares and very rares still based on participation? Did it get any tweaking?

According to the developers, once you got the reward table you had a chance to get common<->very rare on a weighted random roll. Players have guessed those weights to be around:
  • Very Rare : Rate = 5% (Natural 20 on a D20)
  • Rare : Rate = 20% (16-19 on a D20)
  • Uncommon : Rate = 50% (6-15 on a D20)
  • Common : Rate = 25% (1 - 5 on a D20)
As to if they changed the numbers significantly, that is still being debated. The April 26 patch supposedly changed the uncommons rate, and Issue 20.5 apparently had further small tweaks to the table.

They did lower the participation metric so that more people would qualify for that random roll. While it is still possible to get the thread table, it is hard to do if you are participating.

Like Snowy said, they never were. What you got once you met the participation minimum was random. Despite all the claims, there really was no way to get better drops by doing different things or bringing characters with better AoE or whatever the theory of the week was.

I'm not sure that this relates directly to the OP, but it is in the same area. Has there been any mention of balancing rewards based on the difficulty of the trial? BAF is considerably easier and shorter than Lambda which is considerably easier than Keyes, but the reward for all three are roughly the same. Hence the reason most people just farm the BAF again and again.
