Hello,

Sometime I dual box when I'm bored (or alone), or when I need to help another toon. Here's my problem : when I'm dual boxing, I can do anything (doing nothing or doing incarnate raiding with 24 players), the SECOND account crash in a bit less than 2 hours, but the FIRST one is still OK and playable.

I don't know where my problem is and where to start, thus I'm asking your help !

Here's my data :

Hello,

I have some news : I tried secure mode, but nothing changed. I re-installed my NVidia drivers, but nothing changes...

This computer is quite new (i have it for 4 months - I needed an OpenGL 4 compatible GPU), and I never used it with XP (my old computer was running under XP). So, maybe It's coming from Windows 7 ? I guess that i'll need to install XP again... *sigh*

I watched my memory 30 minutes before the crash : it looks like the FIRST account remains stable, whereas the SECOND rise slowly (thus, maybe explains why it take 2 hours to crash...). If it's a memory leak, I don't know what can I do, except the dev's correct it ?

Regards,
Heyios

Before doing anything else
You are running CoH from your D drive which has only got 4% free.
Clear some room on this drive or move your install to C.
Windows will have problems on a drive with less than about 15% free space.

Ok, i'll try this when I get home !

Thank you

Hello,

I ran some tests, and it's still not working...
- I made some space in my D Drive (so it's > 15% free)
- I reinstalled NcLauncher and CoH
- I used -renderthread 0 and -stopinactivedisplay 1

So, I guess I'll have to install XP...!

I don't think this is an XP vs Win7 issue. I dual box with no problem on Win7.

BTW, if only the second account crashes, and only after 2 hours, is that worth installing an entire OS in the 'hope' that it might fix it?

You're not alone.

There seems to be a memory leak when running one or more accounts together on the same machine, it's always the second (or third) account that crashes constantly (disconnected from the server) shortly after launching the account or after your memory has been used up.

Yes there is a memory leak as well doing this. I use a memory optimizer running in the back ground to free up some memory while playing, doesn't solve the issue but helps prelong the crash.

I have already spoken to the devs about this, but they still are not sure what is happening. Maybe you could petition the issue and help get a solution to the issue?

No need to reinstall anything, this is a COH client issue and not a windows issue.

You're right, It might be not worth it. However, i'm kinda desperate, so I'll try anything. Also, my older computer (RIP) used to be on XP, and it was working just fine.

Thank you for your reply; at least I'm not alone. I will /petition when i'm home (I should have done it before !). When you are three boxing (or more), does ALL but the first session crash, or just the LAST ?
The memory optimizer could be a good help, thank you ! I'll look for one when i'm back home.

It's always the last account that is run, when that crashes, then the issue moves to the second account that is running.

In my case, yes.

This was one of the first things I did. Also, starting in safemode didn't help either.

Neither did 'Stop Sending All buffs' toggled to disabled helps (Status, Groups and Pet Buff displays in the General Tab).

I've noticed this too when dual boxing. I seem to be able to go for quite a bit longer if I run in windowed mode and shrink or minimize the windows.

The other thing I have happen occurs when I go to quit to desktop or to login. This will often hang once I've started a second instance.

Hello !

Yes, I shut down the launcher, but I didn't helped too.
I tried 2 memory organizer todays and they were quite effective : I went from 65% of my memory used to 18%. I thought the problem was resolved : if I have plenty of free memory, my sessions won't crash. Well, it didn't happen. The last session crash, even If it take less than 100Mo in memory. Actually, whatever memory it takes, the game crash after 2hours... Also, I forgot to say that I dual box in window mode and I minimize the windows. (I also freeze the display in order to spend less memory in the task via the -stopinactivedisplay 1 command. So, even If my memory is well organized, the crash still happen. (At this moment, my cityofheroes.com are using a bit more than 10Mo in memory, EACH)

Maybe I need to turn off an option in game, but I don't know wich one. And I don't know how to reproduce the bug, since it take 2hours to crash !

I'm sad that there might be no answers to this. I /bug this, but I doubt there will be any fix.

If you have more hints, please share them, they could be helpful !

Heyios

Hey,

Started to play two accounts on the same computer again yesterday and I got crashes on the second account and only the second account. I didn't time it exactly but two hours seem close to the rate at which it was happening. I'm on WinXP, so I don't know if switching OSes would help you much.

Hello,

Thank for your input Nihilii. It's looks like that installing XP won't help too. We are running out of ideas, I guess

It's strange that You and I crash at the same time. So, why ~2hours ? Is there something happening at this time ? If yes, what is it ? Maybe it's a server thing ? Maybe it's our configuration that make the game crash, but how ? If yes, what have we in common ?

Regards,
Heyios

I used to have a similar problem under Win7, running two windowed instances. The "second", not visible instance usually became unresponsive (the dreaded "No response" in the window title) after a while.

Properly minimising the second instance and using "/maxinactivefps 5" in both instances fixed it for me.

Posted

I use "/maxinactivefps 1" in both instances myself. I've had the "no response" issue on computers that struggled a bit to get the job done, performance wise. I would tend to think that this specific crash issue is different and related to something else (but I could be wrong, of course).

I would just like to recap the issues and see if you all agree that we're experiencing the same symptoms here.

1. Using more than one account will result in the 2nd or 3rd account having a memory leak, but never the account that is run first.
2. The 2nd or 3rd account will crash after a few hours (2 or more), but never the account that is run first.
3. 2nd or 3rd account having connection issues after being ran. I normally find rebooting will help with this.
4. Using "/maxinactivefps 4" or lower will cause disconnection issues when playing, again this only happens with the 2nd and 3rd accounts and not the first run.

Your first and second point fit my experience.

So far, I have not had connection issues with my second account or using /maxinactivefps with a value lower than 4 (1). Whether this is because it doesn't happen to me, or that it didn't happen *yet*, I don't know.

I've been running dual accounts for a couple of years now and very rarely have encountered any problems.

I've done with with a GeForce 8800 (the overlocked version) and a GeForce 9800.

My current box is running WinVista64 (yea, laugh it up) with 8gb RAM and a dual core 64bit CPU. My C-Drive has ~10gb free space.

For what it's worth, I'm -not- running the current version of nVidia's drivers (I'm at work so I can't check which version I am running) and I always use /maxinactivefps 5 on both instances.

Generally speaking, when I dual box, I play for a couple of hours on average but sometimes I've gone 5 - 6 hours. My RAM usage on my PC hovers around 6gb total (I run other apps while playing CoX too). In task manager, I don't think I've ever seen the memory usage for the instances go above 1.5gb each.

I'm not sure if any of this information is helpful, but figured I'd throw my 2cents out there.

Hello,

Thank you all for your answers.

I don't know if we were listened by a higher being, but it looks like there's no more crash ! I dual box for more than 3 hours now and I only use 22% of my 3.5Gb memory. I'm running a test this day, and I'll tell you if I have this crash again...

I can't believe it might be fix'd !

Heyios

Hello,

My 2 sessions are still here & active, so I guess the bug is fix'd - at least it works for me.

Feel free to add something if you are still crash when launching 2 sessions, maybe an higher being is watching us !

Thanks for all folks,
Heyios
