Yes it's an often used plot when speciation of mankind is the theme. The dominate species of man tries to eliminate or control the new emergent species while the emergent species divides into two factions. It happened on the 4400, Heroes, Alphas, Darwin's Radio/Darwin's Children, Babylon 5, etc. Heck you could even make an argument that theme existed in Atlas Shrugged between the "minds" and the rest of society.

As for the OP, I focus on what's different in Alphas delivery of the often used Sci fi and superhero tropes.

Alphas is awesome cause it's different.
The powers aren't too extreme. There's a great subtlety in many of the abilities.

I actually don't care for Alphas. Last week I decided to just give up on the show after giving it plenty of time pull me in. Reason for doing so was mainly because I found Gary to be flat out annoying. I gave it one more chance this week. Gary was better but the show still doesn't interest me.

The story is stealing from X-Men too heavily I feel
We have a professor that runs an "institute" that is there to help "Alphas" to learn to control their abilities that has now been made to be a tactical squad to deal with other "Alphas" and a second group that feels that if "Alphas" are exposed they'd be hated and there'd be a war. And these two groups that have disagreements about how to deal with things, but generally agree that there is a problem.
