Kinetic Melee: Archetype/Secondary Suggestions

I've been out of the game for a while and, needless to say, a lot has changed. I've poked around a bit and know I want to roll a new Praetorian character using Kinetic Melee but could really use some advice and recommendations as far as archetype and secondary power set selection go.

Other details:

  • My play style is on the more casual end of the spectrum with a lot of soloing, and some minor PvP.
  • In the past, the characters I enjoyed the most tended to be Stalkers because of their sneaky Hide ability. Part of me would like to branch away from playing a Stalker — maybe pick up Invisibility with a different archetype?
  • Due to Kinetic Melee being so flashy itself, I think I would like to use something more subdued and natural as a secondary. Probably along the lines of Super Reflexes, Willpower, or Ninjitsu — but I'm very open to other suggestions you think would be fun.

Kin/EA Brute will give you stealth in Energy Cloak, although you may consider the EA toggles too flashy (I believe you can color them down so they're not as noticeable though). EA has its weak points but is getting a buff next issue (Conserve Power replaced with Energize, one of the toggles is getting a +Recharge aura similar to Invincibility's +Def, Energy Drain adds +Def along with its +End), as well as being proliferated to Scrappers if you prefer that archetype. (But you'll have to wait a few months for that...) As far as concept goes, Kin/EA is a nice fit thematically, and I've been enjoying mine up to level 26 (but he's shelved until the buff).

I've only just started my KM/Inv Scrapper (lv 10 currently), but so far I'm loving it. Invulnerability isn't too flashy and ends up with some really solid Resists all around. It could also fit the Kinetic theme too, depending how you explain it.

I'm intriqued by the possibilities PS+FE+Fury and what that does to Burn, Burst, and CS. Bearing in mind the differences in brute/scrapper FE and Burn.

But I'm too game-lazy to do it.

Someone brought up an interesting q in another thread about KM:

Given KM is generally considered better on a scapper, and /FA better on a brute - which one to roll?

Dragos Bahtiam - 50 Fire/Ice Blaster - Lib

For PvP KM/Regen Stalker would be a good one I guess, I'm no expert in Pvp, this is just what I read. Since I have an Elec/Reg, my next Stalker project is a KM/EA.

Since KM works better on Scrappers than Brutes you can't go wrong with any secondary (well for pvp the defensive ones are not that good nowadays). For Pve, KM/SD and KM/EA would be my choices. I don't like WP and I find /FA and /ELA better on Brutes so I'd go with SD for extra damage or the upcoming EA if you can wait.

EDIT: KM/Dark looks good too, I didn't think about that because I love /DA so much I have a lot of Dark Armor toons so /DA is 'blocked' for me in my brain when I think about rolling a new melee toon.

I like KM/DA on a Stalker. You get the 100% critical on Burst from Hide, the auto-recharge on Build Up, and can stack stuns to mez bosses. Good stuff.

I've leveled a KM/FA scrapper when it came out, expecting a damage powerhouse based on the numbers, and was extremely disappointed with its actual performance ingame. Damage is excellent... If you fight a static target or have someone else to hold things in place for you. Otherwise, everything runs for the hills every single time you drop a Burn patch or kill an enemy, which hurts much more than on a normal scrapper as you need things in melee consistently to optimize PS stacking.

I haven't tried a KM/FA brute. However, I just recently went from a KM/SR scrapper with Confront to a KM/SR brute, and despite the ~40 DPS hit on paper I find the character to perform better on every metric, including damage, thanks to stuff not running away. Considering SR scrappers don't have Burn or Blazing Aura and hence don't cause nearly as much running as FA scrappers...

I think if you aim to be a ST specialist and pick Confront, the scrapper can be more efficient. A properly slotted Confront won't need to be used more than every ~20-25s even against a +4, once you're levelshifted, so it's not a very significant damage loss, and the difference in damage output compared to the brute is tremendous.

If you want AOEs, I'd go brute, as even doing +50% (total) damage breaks down if you hit half of the targets.

My 2 most successful Kinetic Melee characters were my KM/DA scrap and my KM/EA Stalker. Really enjoy them both, and with the /EA buff coming the stalker will probably get even better.

My KM/SD scrapper hits like a busload of concrete-filled nuns and is durable as hell. Can't recommend KM/SD enough.

Similarly just returned thanks to the Steam sale. This topic is exactly what I was looking for.

Have 4 melee 50s (2 scrap, brute, tank), but still saw Kinetic Melee and just have to roll one. 50s were Regen, WP, Fire, Elec... so need something different. Have SR in the 30s. So yeah, thinking Dark or Shield.

Any more preferences between dark/shield between scrap/brute? Would dark's death shroud really help fury as a brute? Or is shield better either way?
