Radiation Blast/Fire Manipulation Thoughts

Ok, I rolled my very first blaster and he is a Rad/Fire, What is everyone's feelings about these powersets?

I like using Irradiate and Combustion together since they recharge at the same time, looks like I will have to find a way to IO for defense against melee or should I IO for something else?

There are no guides for Rad/Fire.

This combination is great in lower levels. You can go to Boomtown in your teens and use your PBAoEs to great effect and basically self-PL. That is really fun.

The problem is that a PBAoE attack chain becomes somewhat less effective in higher levels when your alpha strike can't take out some groups quickly enough. Some would try to build for S/L capped or melee Defense but that is a bit expensive.

My personal view was that if you really love the combo and the PBAoE approach, you can make it work, but it was not worth the effort IMHO. I just didn't like it enough, I guess.

Ideally, the tank will die precisely as everyone else starts fighting, allowing aggro to be spread evenly among the blaster. -seebs, "How to Suck at CoH/CoV" Guide

That's the thing, I am not sure what seems to be the best approach...I read a thread on blasters just now where someone said blasters are the worst AT in the game (Paraphrasing) and that is making me not want to continue.

I am trying to jump in with a purple insp and go PBAoE, then jumping back with Electron Haze and picking them off one by one, I am not sure what to do.

Also, I am keeping this toon strictly Praetorian.

This is the build for my rad/fire/mace. It is softcapped to S/L and runs 34% defense to melee. The toon lives in melee and if I am up against something that uses a non-S/L melee attack I can pop a purple and cap melee defense.

Like all blasters it is weak to mez heavy groups like rikti, malta, and carnies. Against most other groups you can pack enough break frees to use them proactively and just stock up again between missions.

This is rapidly becoming one of (if not my most) favorite characters. I solo relatively easily against +2/x8. 2 iterations of the PBAoE chain will leave only the bosses in a spawn and those will only take a couple of single target attacks to finish off.

While leveling (before the toon was IO'd out) it was easy to pop a couple of purples and wade into a -1/x8 or even level/x8 spawn finish it off, fill the insp tray and combine up 2 more purples and do it again to the next spawn. Street sweeping in Dark Astoria was a breeze as were the story arcs in Croatoa.

The one caveat about the whole thing is that you can't remain in Praetoria and pull it off. The Mace PPP is an important part of the build.

IF you plan on leveling one you MUST focus on going for a defense build. Even on 8 man team your PBaoes will draw aggro to you like something fierce. One of the best power pics that I decided on was Hot Feet. Not only does it hurt the baddies but it makes them haul booty.

it is a very fun build i run mine " Omnicide " all the time
you really need black scorpions patron armor tho
i went for S/L & ranged def i softcapped those because softcappin mele an S/L semed a bit redundant since all mele is smashing or leathal be it swords axes or fists but ranged attacks come at you in all forms energy ,psy or what ever the biggest drag on a blaster is the lack of mez protection well that and a lack of a awsome M?A secondary !!!!

I've got to mirror the advice to build for S/L and/or Melee defense with this pairing. The aggro you bring down on yourself is epic. I included the Fighting Pool and Acrobatics from Leaping in my build for added survival. I passed on Aid Self, not because it's a bad power for this build but I planned on specc'ing into Ageless Incarnate + green inspirations use.

Like many have commented, Rad/Fire is full of sweet PBAE damage. However this requires you survive in Melee range to do it. I'm not really a fan of blasters. I tend to think they give up too much for what they gain. However I was recently looking a some builds, and wanted to post one I had come up with. It's kind of low on recharge, and is dependent on Cardiac to deal with the huge toggle cost. It also didn't manage to fit in Aid Self, which will be missed I think. However it does manage to get 3 nice PBAE attacks, Blazing Aura and Hotfeet, and it caps S/L/E defense and gets NE to 36% and Ranged to 33%. So pretty durable for a blaster.

Hmmm I went a completly different way than some of you. It works for me and I dont know why lol since its res based (lately been hating def based toons w/o def debuff protection) and I took Blazing Aura and Hot feet. I get along just fine with 30 percent Defto melee n Aoe and 45 percent res to S/L. As said earlier Hot Feet can be a game changer since they do a slow run away which gives excellent mitigation. I have no trouble killing things even in the high levels. Also there is no worst AT it's all how you play the game. Me? I make all my toons with a certain mindset of how I want them to play. This toon I knew was gonna be an in your face melee toon!

Yeah...I'm still on the fence about using Blazing aura...is it worth it?

Not even close. Hot Feet has a nice large area so it tends to be worth the high endurance cost, but Blazing Aura only hits things that are right next to you. Things that are right next to you tend to either die very quickly (they're in Burn and Fire Sword Circle range) or run away due to the fear effect in Hot Feet and no longer be right next to you. You could skip Hot Feet and not have to worry about the fear effect, but Hot Feet does several times more damage than Blazing Aura due to hitting significantly more targets so why would you do that?

There is one reason to use Blazing Aura: if you are building for maximum damage output on a single hard target like an AV. Standing next to an AV with both damage auras on will give you more DPS, but unless you plan to do that a whole lot I'd just take Hot Feet and call it a day.

As far as Rad/Fire in general, it's a great combo if you can afford an expensive S/L softcap build or you team a lot. On teams it's actually not that dangerous to jump in a couple seconds after the tank and use PBAoEs since you will probably have buffs and you'll only be taking AoE splash damage rather than pulling direct aggro. Solo it's a very dangerous playstyle without a very high end build though.

I would agree with the above but I will also note:

If you are getting a PPP with an AoE immobilize you "can" take Blazing Aura and potentially get good use out of it with a couple caveats.

Lieutenants and minions will die in the first itteration of your PBAoE attack chain, especially if they are immobilized, without Blazing Aura. This leaves appoximately half health bosses left. These half health bosses will not be immobilized in a single application and will run out of Blazing Aura range after taking a single swipe at you. A second itteration of your attack chain (including the immobilize) will finish off the bosses even without Blazing Aura.

All in all for radius, damage output, and endurance costs Blazing Aura simply is not worth it for a blaster.

I'll just say... I disagree with pretty much everything said here. All I need to survive being the "main tank" for an LGTF is a tray full of breakfrees.
