So What's New in COH?
I'm a player from long, long ago who's returning after years away from the game (finally got bored with WOW and Champions never really did much for me) and was just curious, in broad strokes, what's changed?
What should an old school COH player (I played the first year the game was released) know about TODAY's City of Heroes? Thanks. |
*A not-so-comprehensive list of things that you might have missed out on:
Global Defense Nerf
Enhancement Diversification
Invention Origin Enhancements
Incarnates!
Various changes to ATs and Powersets
Villains
Side-Switching and Tip Missions
Reward Merits for content
Markets
Architect Entertainment (make your own missions!)
Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.

I'm in the same boat and the best, most comprehensive way to catch up change-wise is to start here: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Issue_1 - and read down, then continue by clicking the appropriate next issue link at the bottom(and any linked words in a new tab such as Inventions or Salvage that you want more info on); caught me up fairly nicely, actually, moreso than anything on the forums did for sure; all this talk of IOs and frankenslotting and other greek works to me were figured out through the Paragon Wiki ;D
Also, ask on the boards. Most of us don't bite (unless asked nicely).
Oh, and welcome back, I remember you.
Make a man a fire and keep him warm for the day, SET a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life.
Incarnates: K'lir(Fire/Dark Corr):Hot-House Flower(Plant/Fire Dom):Kinrad X(Kin/Rad Def):Itsy-Bitsy Spider(Crab):Two Ton Tony(Mace/WP Broot):Teeny Weeny Widow(Fortunata/Widow) : Zeroth Law (Ice/Fire Tank)
The biggest change to me has been the Market (Wentworths) so I can get what I need for my toon and the Invention Origins (IOs) that allow set bonuses (like 10% regeneration or 5% movement increase or 2.5% endurance recovery) and allow you to get more boosts per power than SOs.
The second biggest change to me is Praetoria (Going Rogue) which has actual compelling stories (unlike 'Kill 50 x' or 'Rescue Hostage X') that go all the way through the zone. I suggest you create a scrapper there and play all the way through one of the story lines (Resistance or Loyalist - and there are two different versions of those: idealist or realist) without going on higher level teams and out-leveling the story. Read the text too. I found some of the arcs to be quite moving. (Also great visuals and appropriate music.)
Third would have to be Villains. I don't play them much, but the zones there are interesting and the visuals are really cool. Now that they can come to COH and we can go to COV, there is a REALLY complex mix of powersets and teams around to play with.
Fourth, some people might not agree with, but if you have a higher level video card, Ultra mode does amazing things to increase visual realism. You've not seen Independence Port until you've seen it in Ultra mode.
Thanks for the advice.
While MOST of my play was Year One, I dabbled in Villains and have played post "enhancement diversification" although not extensively.
With Going Rogue...does that mean that all classes are now available to both side? For example, could I make a villain blaster or a hero stalker or no?
Also, I'm thinking of dabbling in PVP this time around. Is there any class or classes that's considered better for the PVP player?

Coming in Issue 21 (presumably this fall) will be a new tutorial for all non-Praetorian characters, during which you choose whether to be a hero or villain. At that point, you will truly be able to make a villain blaster or hero stalker right out of the gate.
Main Hero: Chad Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1396 Badges
Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
Mission Architect arcs: Doctor Brainstorm's An Experiment Gone Awry, Arc ID 2093

First, to the guy that wrote the definitive Ice/Eng guide and made MANY Blasters much more effective: welcome back!
Second, you will have to pick up the GR expansion to change sides, but its fun to do it.
Third, so much has changed since ED came out it will take you a while to take it all in. Make the trip to Faultline... remember when it was a ghost town you had to kill 10 Vahz in and never see again? Not any more. Positron's TF is now actually fun. Your Level 50 actually has much more to do than just transfer Influence to your lower level toons. Were Croatoa or Striga or the Rikti War Zone even active when you left? They are very different now.
Fitness is inherent now. It is possible for Blasters to get capped Range defense although it takes a LOT of effort.
Again welcome back, looking forward to seeing you on the Blaster boards BD!
Ideally, the tank will die precisely as everyone else starts fighting, allowing aggro to be spread evenly among the blaster. -seebs, "How to Suck at CoH/CoV" Guide

One change this time around is that my wife is going to be playing with me so we're going to create a super-powered duo. Should be fun! :-)
I asked above but I'll throw it out there again...what archtypes seem to be best suited for PVP? I was thinking about creating a stalker as I created one last time I played the game and had a great deal of fun with him.
LOL...I'm surprised anyone still remembers that. That guide has to be so outdated at this point as to be practically worthless.

As for PvP, I think not so many people play in those zones since around Issue 13 or so. You might try the PvP boards. On the plus side, it's pretty easy to get Shivans now, because no one is there to bother you.

Hey my wife plays sometimes also, send us a tell in game!

One of the things I really enjoyed about WOW was the feeling of being in a dangerous world where you could be attacked by another player at any time. I know someone people despise that but, to me, that made the experience all the more immersive.
I guess things haven't changed or improved with COH in that regard. Oh well, it'll be fun just to take my wife back through all my old virtual haunts.
Welcome back I remember you and your great guide. PVP experienced a really ham handed adjustment in I13 and is little used now. Still a few hard core types there though. The pve game has added and changed a lot and is generally better. I you left pre IO sets that will be the first big adjustment. A lot of fun and customization to be had there. the recent push has been to improve the level 50 game so you may want to break out your old level 50s for a little play. AE is also a big new feature. Have fun there is a lot of new stuff to see.
Welcome back to the game! (And welcome to your wife!)
I agree with the others that hitting the Wiki is the best source of info. If you'd like visuals to go with it (from Issue 10 onward), hit my YT channel (link in my sig) - I did teasers and trailers for Issues 10-now.
Or as some players call them, "animated patch notes."
